Detecting depinning and nonequilibrium transitions with unsupervised machine learning

Using numerical simulations of a model disk system, we demonstrate that a machine learning generated order-parameter-like measure can detect depinning transitions and different dynamic flow phases in systems driven far from equilibrium. Furthermore, we specifically consider monodisperse passive disks with short range interactions undergoing a depinning phase transition when driven over quenched disorder. The machine learning derived order-parameter-like measure identifies the depinning transition as well as different dynamical regimes, such as the transition from a flowing liquid to a phase separated liquid-solid state that is not readily distinguished with traditional measures such as velocity-force curves or Voronoi tessellation. The order-parameter-like measure also shows markedly distinct behavior in the limit of high density where jamming effects occur. Our results should be general to the broad class of particle-based systems that exhibit depinning transitions and nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Lattice Dynamics and Structural Phase Transitions in Eu 2 O 3

Using the density functional theory, we study the structural and lattice dynamical properties of europium sesquioxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) in the cubic, trigonal, and monoclinic phases. The obtained lattice parameters and energies of the Raman modes show a good agreement with the available experimental data. The Eu-partial phonon density of states calculated for the cubic structure is compared with the nuclear inelastic scattering data obtained from a 20 nm thick Eu 2 O 3 film deposited on a YSZ substrate. A small shift of the experimental spectrum to higher energies results from a compressive strain induced by the substrate. On the basis of lattice and phonon properties, we analyze the mechanisms of structural transitions between different phases of Eu 2 O 3 .

X-ray diffraction study of phase transformation dynamics of Fe and Fe-Si alloys along the shock Hugoniot using an x-ray free electron laser

The x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) enables probing a highly compressed material response at the subnanosecond timescale. Here we exploit the ultrafast XFEL pulse to combine reflection x-ray diffraction and laser-driven shock compression to perform a study of the phase transformation and stability in Fe and Fe-Si alloys. Our approach enables us to observe that solid-solid phase transformations occur in Fe and Fe- Si 8.5 wt % in ≤ 130 ps at ~ 130 GPa; no transformation is observed in Fe- Si 16 wt % up to 110 GPa. Density functional theory calculations predict similar phase relations.

Light-Induced Transient Lattice Dynamics and Metastable Phase Transition in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Nanocrystals

In this study, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) offer desirable optoelectronic properties with prospective utility in photovoltaics, lasers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Structural rearrange-ments of MAPbI 3 in response to photoexcitation, such as lattice distortions and phase transitions, are of particular interest, as these engender long carrier lifetime and bolster carrier diffusion. Here, we use variable temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based transient X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to investigate lattice response following ultrafast optical excitation. MAPbI 3 NCs are found to slowly undergo a phase transition from the tetragonal to a pseudocubic phase over the course of 1 ns under 0.02-4.18 mJ/cm 2 fluence photoexcitation, with apparent nonthermal lattice distortions attributed to polaron formation. Lattice recovery exceeds time scales expected for both carrier recombination and thermal dissipation, indicating meta-stability likely due to the proximal phase transition, with symmetry-breaking along equatorial and axial directions. These findings are relevant for fundamental understanding and applications of structure-function properties.

Evidence for Bootstrap Percolation Dynamics in a Photoinduced Phase Transition

Upon intense femtosecond photo-excitation, a many-body system can undergo a phase transition through a non-equilibrium route, but understanding these pathways remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we use time-resolved second harmonic generation to investigate a photo-induced phase transition in Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 and show that mesoscale inhomogeneity profoundly influences the transition dynamics. We observe a marked slowing down of the characteristic time τ that quantifies the transition between two structures. τ evolves non-monotonically as a function of photo-excitation fluence, rising from below 200 fs to ~1.4 ps, then falling again to below 200 fs. To account for the observed behavior, we perform a bootstrap percolation simulation that demonstrates how local structural interactions govern the transition kinetics. Finally, our work highlights the importance of percolating mesoscale inhomogeneity in the dynamics of photo-induced phase transitions and provides a model that may be useful for understanding such transitions more broadly.

Light-driven transitions in quantum paraelectrics

Motivated by recent experiments on pump-induced polar ordering in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO 3 , we study a driven phonon system close to a second-order phase transition. Analyzing its classical dynamics, we find that sufficiently strong driving leads to transitions into polar phases whose structures, determined by the light polarization, are not all accessible in equilibrium. In addition, for certain intensity profiles, we demonstrate the possibility of two-step transitions as a function of fluence. For even stronger field intensities, the possibility of period-doubling and chaotic behavior is demonstrated. Finally we develop a generalized formalism that allows us to consider quantum corrections to the classical dynamics in a systematic fashion. Furthermore, we predict a shift in the critical pump fluence due to quantum fluctuations with a characteristic dependence on the fluence increase rate that should be observable in experiment.

Femtosecond resolution of soft mode dynamics in structural phase transitions

The microscopic pathway along which ions or molecules in a crystal move during structural phase transition can often be described in terms of a collective vibrational mode of the lattice. In many cases, this mode, called a 'soft' phonon mode because of its characteristically low frequency near the phase transition temperature, is difficult to characterize through conventional frequency-domain spectroscopies such as light or neutron scattering. A femtosecond time-domain analog of light-scattering spectroscopy called impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) has been used to examine the soft modes of two perovskite ferroelectric crystals. The low-frequency lattice dynamics of KNbO3 and BaTiO3 are clarified in a manner that permits critical evaluation of microscopic models for their ferroelectric transitions. The results illustrate the advantages of ISRS over conventional Raman spectroscopy of low-frequency, heavily damped soft modes.

Inference of strength and phase transition kinetics in dynamically-compressed tin

Dynamic compression experiments in condensed matter are of interest in part because they provide opportunities to examine material response under extreme conditions; however, the inference of material behavior from dynamic experiments is challenging in the presence of phase transitions exhibiting kinetic processes. Demonstrating an approach to quantitative interpretation of such dynamic experiments, here we present a Bayesian model calibration of strength and phase transformation parameters to data drawn from pulsed power and gas gun shot experiments. The posterior predictions of the Bayesian model capture the experimental measurements and account for the various uncertainties in the experimental configurations. This holistic approach to model calibration utilizing multiple types of experimental data identifies important cross correlations among kinetics, strength, and the phase boundary. Improved insight into potential sources of current model form error is provided by comparing the differences between calibrations against different subsets of the experimental data.

Fluctuation driven electroweak phase transition

We examine the dynamics of the electroweak phase transition in the early Universe. For Higgs masses in the range 46 less than or = M sub H less than or = 150 GeV and top quark masses less than 200 GeV, regions of symmetric and asymmetric vacuum coexist to below the critical temperature, with thermal equilibrium between the two phases maintained by fluctuations of both phases. We propose that the transition to the asymmetric vacuum is completed by percolation of these subcritical fluctuations. Our results are relevant to scenarios of baryogenesis that invoke a weakly first-order phase transition at the electroweak scale.

Anharmonicity and Phase Diagram of Magnesium Oxide in the Megabar Regime

With density functional molecular dynamics simulations, we computed the phase diagram of MgO from 50 to 2000 GPa up to 20000 K. Via thermodynamic integration (TDI), we derive the Gibbs free energies of the B1, B2, and liquid phases and determine their phase boundaries. With TDI and a pseudo-quasi-harmonic approach, we show that anharmonic effects are important and stabilize the B1 phase in particular. As a result, the B1-B2 transition boundary in the pressure-temperature plane exhibits a steep slope. We predict the B1-B2-liquid triple point to occur at approximately T= 10000 K and P = 370 GPa, which is higher in pressure than was inferred with quasi-harmonic methods alone. We predict the principal shock Hugoniot curve to enter the B2 phase stability domain but only over a very small range of parameters. Here, this may render it difficult to observe this phase with shock experiments because of kinetic effects.

Kuramoto synchronization of quantum tunneling polarons for describing the dynamic structure in cuprate superconductors

A major open topic in cuprates is the interplay between the lattice and electronic dynamics and the importance of their coupling to the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). As evidenced by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments, anharmonic structural effects are correlated with the charge dynamics and the transition to a superconducting phase in different HTSC compounds. Here, in this paper, we describe how structural anharmonic effects can be coupled to electronic and lattice dynamics in cuprate systems by performing the exact diagonalization of a prototype anharmonic many-body Hamiltonian on a relevant 6-atom cluster and show that the EXAFS results can be understood as a Kuramoto synchronization transition between coupled internal quantum tunneling of polarons associated with the two-site distribution of the copper–apical oxygen (Cu-O ap ) pair in the dynamic structure. The transition is driven by the anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations and promotes the pumping of charge, initially stored at the apical oxygen reservoirs, into the copper-oxide plane. Simultaneously, a finite projection of the internal quantum tunneling polaron extends to the copper–planar oxygen (Cu-O pl ) pair. All these findings allow an interpretation based on an effective quantum-mechanical triple-well potential associated with the oxygen sites of the 6-atom cluster, which accurately represents the phase synchronization of apical oxygens and lattice-assisted charge transfer to the CuO 2 plane.

A high-dimensional neural network potential for molecular dynamics simulations of condensed phase nickel and phase transitions

A high-dimensional neural network interatomic potential was developed and used in molecular dynamics simulations of condensed phase Ni and Ni systems with liquid–solid phase coexistence. The reference data set was generated by sampling the potential energy surface over a broad temperature-pressure domain using ab initio MD simulations to train a unified potential. Excellent agreement was achieved between bulk face-centered cubic nickel thermal expansion simulations and relevant experimental data. The same potential also yields accurate structures and diffusivities in the liquid state. The phase transition between liquid and solid phases was simulated using the two-phase interface method. The predicted melting point temperature is within a few kelvins of the literature value. Here, the general methodology could be applied to describe crystals with much more complex phase behaviors.

Observations of twinning microstructure in iron ramp-compressed through the α – ε phase transition

Single crystal iron was ramp-compressed along the [100] axis at 4 GPa/ns through the α–ϵ phase transformation at 13 GPa. Unlike shock experiments, in these ramp compression experiments the bcc lattice is observed to be nearly isotropically relaxed before the phase transition. There was a mixed α/ϵ phase region starting at ~13 GPa which was observed for 0.75 ns until the peak stress of 18 GPa was reached. In situ x-ray diffraction measurements show the formation of new hcp orientations not reported in shock or quasistatic compression experiments. The new hcp orientations appear to be caused by {10¯11} <10¯1 ¯2> → {¯1011} <¯101¯2> sequential twins that occur during the phase transition. This twinning mechanism relieves the shear strain caused by the bcc-hcp phase transition from the isotropically relaxed bcc phase while subject to uniaxial compression. Furthermore, these results show that in iron the induced microstructure through a phase transition and the phase transition mechanism depend on the loading history.

Phonon lifetimes and mode softening in cubic Cs 2 AgBiBr 6

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as noteworthy candidates for photovoltaic applications in recent years. Their high power-conversion efficiency is largely attributed to the structure-function relationship, which is not well understood. In this study, we examine the low-frequency phonons of the double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 using neutron inelastic scattering. We find that the acoustic phonon lifetimes decrease from 16 to 3 ps along Γ to X, which is indicative of significant anharmonicity that contributes to the ultralow thermal conductivity. Additionally, we observe a linear temperature dependence of the square of the zone-center soft optical phonon energy, which is consistent with a weakly first-order displacive cubic-tetragonal structural phase transition. These results provide a deeper understanding of the lattice dynamics and phase transitions in MHPs as well as the effects of anharmonicity by comparison with prototypical hybrid organic-inorganic MHPs, (CH 3 NH 3 ) PbX 3 (X = Br, I).
