Ducted Fuel Injection And Cooled Spray Technologies For Particulate Control In Heavy-duty Diesel Engines (Final Report)

Cooled Spray (CS) and Ducted Fuel Injection (DFI) are in-cylinder technologies for diesel engines that can reduce particulate matter and soot emissions and data has been published showing that these technologies can reduce soot emissions by 75-100% for some engines at some operating conditions. However, little is known about scaling the devices for engine size. Additionally, the performance of either technology over the engine duty cycle has not been explored. This project addresses both of these points through single-cylinder engine investigations. The objectives of this project are to provide details about dimensional scaling of these devices and to demonstrate 75% PM reduction over a range of operating conditions on a single-cylinder engine. Two engines were used for this project: a 125mm bore optically accessible engine at Sandia National Laboratories and a 168mm bore metal engine at Southwest Research Institute. The optical engine was used to study the performance of DFI and CS inserts for a large injector orifice diameter injector that is characteristic of a locomotive engine and to perform scaling studies for DFI. The metal engine was used to perform scaling and alignment studies for CS and to evaluate the technology for both EGR and non-EGR engines over the engine operating map. Modifications were required for both engines to accept the prototype inserts being tested. The optical engine required a new fuel injector, cylinder head and piston so that tests could be run at the pressures and engine speeds required. Additionally, a novel rotating stage was designed for the optical engine to simplify alignment of the modules. The metal engine required a modified cylinder head to accept CS inserts and a modified piston to provide additional space around the fuel injector for the CS inserts. Tests on the optical engine showed that DFI reduces PM emissions for both small injector orifices (0.170mm diameter) and large injector orifices (0.290mm). For high load testing, the DFI modules were not as effective as at low load testing, but it was acknowledged that minimal geometric optimization was performed and more improvements may be possible. Comparing DFI to CS and conventional diesel combustion (CDC), DFI performed better than CS or CDC. The CS geometries used in these studies may not be ideal for that engine and additional modifications likely would improve performance. Tests on the metal engine showed PM reductions as high has 80% at some operating conditions with duty-cycle PM reductions of ~50% for EGR and non-EGR configurations. The CS testing on the metal engine showed that chamfering of the fuel passage inlet either through hydro-erosion or mechanical grinding provided significant improvements in the PM reduction capabilities of the insert. Additionally, alignment sensitivities were explored and the data show that the tolerance to misalignment is approximately 0.05 to 0.1mm for the inserts that were studied here. Air-fuel ratio was shown to be important in the effectiveness of the CS inserts. In several tests, it was shown that the CS inserts are more effective at reducing the PM for high-AFR operating conditions compared to low AFR conditions. In summary, multiple designs were evaluated on both engines. It was found that for the conditions and configurations studied here, a fuel passage diameter of ~2.5mm performed best overall. Significant duty-cycle PM reductions are possible using these technologies and sensitivities to AFR, alignment fuel passage diameter and inlet fuel passage shaping were explored and are reported here. More PM reduction may be possible with improved geometric design and attention to alignment practices.

Automatic load sharing in inverter modules

Active feedback loads transistor equally with little power loss. Circuit is suitable for balancing modular inverters in spacecraft, computer power supplies, solar-electric power generators, and electric vehicles. Current-balancing circuit senses differences between collector current for power transistor and average value of load currents for all power transistors. Principle is effective not only in fixed duty-cycle inverters but also in converters operating at variable duty cycles.

Precise Timing and Phase-resolved Spectroscopy of the Young Pulsar J1617-5055 with NuSTAR

We report on a Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observation of the young, energetic pulsar PSR J1617-5055. Parkes Observatory 3 GHz radio observations of the pulsar (taken about 7 yr before the NuSTAR observations) are also reported here. NuSTAR detected pulsations at a frequency of f ≍ 14.4 Hz (P ≍ 69.44 ms) and, in addition, the observation was long enough to measure the source's frequency derivative, ḟ ≈ -2.8 X10^(-11) Hz/s. We find that the pulsar shows one peak per period at both hard X-ray and radio wavelengths, but that the hard X-ray pulse is broader (having a duty cycle of ~0.7), than the radio pulse (having a duty cycle of ~0.08). Additionally, the radio pulse is strongly linearly polarized. J1617's phase-integrated hard X-ray spectrum is well fit by an absorbed power-law model, with a photon index Γ = 1.59 ± 0.02. The hard X-ray pulsations are well described by three Fourier harmonics, and have a pulsed fraction that increases with energy. We also fit the phase-resolved NuSTAR spectra with an absorbed power-law model in five phase bins and find that the photon index varies with phase from Γ = 1.52 ± 0.03 at phases around the flux maximum to Γ = 1.79 ± 0.06 around the flux minimum. Last, we compare our results with other pulsars whose magnetospheric emission is detected at hard X-ray energies and find that, similar to previous studies, J1617's hard X-ray properties are more similar to the MeV pulsars than the GeV pulsars.

Seeking Augmented Information Content Concerning Diurnal Precipitation Achieved by Combining TRMM-PR and CloudSat-CPR Radar Data Sets

The CloudSat satellite's Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) is a highly sensitive 94 GHz (W-band) nadir viewing radar system flown in retrograde sun synchronous orbit useful for determining the vertical structure of cloud hydrometeors down to sensitivity of approx. -30 dBZ reflectivity factor. Given this sensitivity, it is possible to unambiguously measure precipitation rates in clouds over a spectrum extending from approx. 0.08 - 3.0 mm hr (sup -1) down to altitudes of 0.5 km with approx.0.25 km vertical binning. This enables an effective means to measure a great deal of the drizzle and light rain spectrum. However, because of its near-polar sunsynchronous orbit, CloudSat cannot sample the diurnal cycle of precipitation, nor with its nadir-only CPR view can it obtain a high duty cycle in sampling precipitation at fixed local times over fixed positions. On the other hand, the TRMM satellite, which is flown in a non-sunsynchronous 35-degree inclined orbit carrying the 13.8 GHz KU-band Precipitation Radar (PR) scanning through nadir over an approx. 225 km swath, can sample both the diurnal cycle and with a much improved duty cycle relative to CloudSat. Moreover, the PR and CPR have the same 0.25 km vertical binning capability. The PR's greatest shortcoming is its approx. +17 dBZ sensitivity, which eliminates the possibility of measuring rain rates below -0.3-0.5 mm hr(sup -1), which can involve rainfall accumulations of up to 50% of the total over some regions. This begs the question of whether by combining CPR and PR data sets, whether it is possible to obtain an augmented measurement of the diurnal precipitation cycle. By collecting complimentary datasets during CloudSat and TRMM satellite orbit crossings within a delta t = 45-min proximity window, it is possible to demonstrate that whenever TRMM detects a precipitation signal, the correlations along the vertical axis between the reflectivities acquired from the CPR and PR are in inverse proportion to the magnitude of the delta t proximity window. By taking advantage of these underlying correlations, it is possible to develop a functional which can be used to broaden the reflectivity spectrum, concomitantly the rain rate spectrum, of the PR measurements based on the inherently broader reflectivity spectrum of the CPR at the lower reflectivity end of the spectrum, concomitantly at lighter rain rates. With the functional in place, it is then possible to produce synthetic CloudSat precipitation imagery over the PR track and thus over the diurnal time period. These augmented data are then used to study the spectral-vertical diurnal properties of precipitation over oceanic regions observed by TRMM.

Evaluation of ceramics for stator applications: Gas turbine engines interim report. Stator fabrication and evaluation

The objective was to assess current ceramic materials, fabrication processes, reliability prediction, and stator durability when subjected to simulated automotive gas turbine engine operating conditions. Ceramic one-piece stators were fabricated of two materials, silicon nitride and silicon carbide, using two near-net-shape processes, slip casting and injection molding. Non-destructive evaluation tests were conducted on all stators identifying irregularities which could contribute to failures under durability testing. Development of the test rig and automatic control system for repeatably controlling air flow rate and temperature over a highly transient durability duty cycle is discussed. Durability results are presented for repeated thermal cycle testing of the ceramic one-piece stators. Two duty cycles were used, encompassing the temperature ranges of 704 to 1204 C (1300 to 2200 F) and 871 to 1371 C (1600 to 2500 F). Tests were conducted on 28 stators, accumulating 135,551 cycles in 2441 hours of hot testing. Cyclic durability for the ceramic one-piece stator was demonstrated to be in excess of 500 hours, accumulating over 28,850 thermal cycles. Ceramic interface forces were found to be the significant factor in limiting stator life rather than the scatter in material strength properties or the variation in component defects encountered.

Dynamic modelling and simulation study for the Galileo spacecraft pulsed-mode spinup/400 N main engine burn/spindown maneuvers

Two Galileo dynamic models were developed to simulate the spinup, the main engine burn and the spindown maneuvers for the critical events of the Jupiter orbit insertion and perijove raise maneuver. The dynamic interaction between the spin thruster pulsing frequency, the science magnetometer boom flexible modes and the propellant slosh modes were studied. The prediction of safe orbit insertion was validated in flight. For the perijove raise maneuver, the simulation results indicated that propellant unporting would occur if the original spin thruster duty cycle was not updated. Based on further simulation results, a new duty cycle was selected to prevent propellant unporting. Subsequent Galileo flight data indicated that the perijove raise maneuver was successfully executed.
