Partition functions of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 gauge theories on S 2 × $\mathbb{R}_ε^2$ and duality

We compute the partition functions of [Formula: see text] gauge theories on [Formula: see text] using supersymmetric localization. The path integral reduces to a sum over vortices at the poles of [Formula: see text] and at the origin of [Formula: see text]. The exact partition functions allow us to test Seiberg duality beyond the supersymmetric index. We propose the [Formula: see text] partition functions on the [Formula: see text]-background, and show that the Nekrasov partition functions can be recovered from these building blocks.

Warped compactifications and holographic duality

We review warped compactifications of superstring theory with some attention to the limit in which these resemble “bottom-up” phenomenological models. In addition to some discussion of the original Klebanov–Witten and Klebanov–Strassler setups, we also touch on various generalizations of the geometry that have been considered. Various other systems with a holographic duality are also briefly reviewed. The point of this latter exploration is to illustrate how far beyond the standard AdS 5 × S 5 setup things have moved over the years.

Comments on foliated gauge theories and dualities in 3+1d

We investigate the properties of foliated gauge fields and construct several foliated field theories in 3+1d that describe foliated fracton orders both with and without matter, including the recent hybrid fracton models. These field theories describe Abelian or non-Abelian gauge theories coupled to foliated gauge fields, and they fall into two classes of models that we call the electric models and the magnetic models. We show that these two classes of foliated field theories enjoy a duality. We also construct a model (using foliated gauge fields and an exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonian model) for a subsystem-symmetry protected topological (SSPT) phase, which is analogous to a one-form symmetry protected topological phase, with the subsystem symmetry acting on codimension-two subregions. We construct the corresponding gauged SSPT phase as a foliated two-form gauge theory. Some instances of the gauged SSPT phase are a variant of the X-cube model with the same ground state degeneracy and the same fusion, but different particle statistics.

Exotic $U(1)$ symmetries, duality, and fractons in 3+1-dimensional quantum field theory

We extend our exploration of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 2 + 1 dimensions to 3+1 3 + 1 dimensions. These theories exhibit exotic global symmetries, a peculiar spectrum of charged states, unusual gauge symmetries, and surprising dualities. Many of the systems we study have a known lattice construction. In particular, one of them is a known gapless fracton model. The novelty here is in their continuum field theory description. In this paper, we focus on models with a global U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry and in a followup paper we will study models with a global \mathbb{Z}_N ℤ N symmetry.

Measurement of H(e,e’) and D(e,e’) Cross-Sections for Bloom-Gilman Quark-Hadron Duality Study

The E12-10-002 experiment which ran in 2018 in Hall C at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility measured the inclusive electron scattering cross-sections for hydrogen and deuterium. This was the first experiment conducted with the new Super High-Momentum Spectrometer and accompanying instrumentation. These measurements extend the previous Hall C measurements up to Q2 = 16 GeV2. This dissertation presents the analyses of the new detectors and shows the preliminary results for F2 structure function and the study of quark-hadron duality in the four nucleon-resonance regions.

Duality and supersymmetry constraints on the weak gravity conjecture

Positivity bounds coming from consistency of UV scattering amplitudes are not always sufficient to prove the weak gravity conjecture for theories beyond Einstein-Maxwell. Additional ingredients about the UV may be necessary to exclude those regions of parameter space which are naïvely in conflict with the predictions of the weak gravity conjecture. In this paper we explore the consequences of imposing additional symmetries inherited from the UV theory on higher-derivative operators for Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion theory. Using black hole thermodynamics, for a preserved SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) symmetry we find that the weak gravity conjecture then does follow from positivity bounds. For a preserved O(d, d; $\mathbb{R}$) symmetry we find a simple condition on the two Wilson coefficients which ensures the positivity of corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio and that follows from the null energy condition alone. We find that imposing supersymmetry on top of either of these symmetries gives corrections which vanish identically, as expected for BPS states.

Single Electron Self-coherence and Its Wave/Particle Duality in the Electron Microscope

Intensities in high-resolution phase-contrast images from electron microscopes build up discretely in time by detecting single electrons. A wave description of pulse-like coherent-inelastic interaction of an electron with matter implies a time-dependent coexistence of coherent partial waves. Their superposition forms a wave package by phase decoherence of 0.5 - 1 radian with Heisenbergs energy uncertainty ΔE H = $\hbar$/2 Δt -1 matching the energy loss ΔE of a coherent-inelastic interaction and sets the interaction time Δt. In these circumstances, the product of Planck's constant and the speed of light hc is given by the product of the expression for temporal coherence λ 2 /Δλ and the energy loss ΔE. Experimentally, the self-coherence length was measured by detecting the energy-dependent localization of scattered, plane matter waves in surface proximity exploiting the Goos–Hänchen shift. Chromatic-aberration Cc-corrected electron microscopy on boron nitride (BN) proves that the coherent crystal illumination and phase contrast are lost if the self-coherence length shrinks below the size of the crystal unit cell at ΔE > 200 eV. Finally, in perspective, the interaction time of any matter wave compares with the lifetime of a virtual particle of any elemental interaction, suggesting the present concept of coherent-inelastic interactions of matter waves might be generalizable.

Long-range fermions and critical dualities

We construct long-range fermionic models with the Gross-Neveu and GrossNeveu-Yukawa interaction, and argue that their critical regimes are equivalent. To this end, we calculate various CFT data in ϵ- and 1/N-expansion, and demonstrate their agreement in the overlapping regimes of validity.

Self-duality under gauging a non-invertible symmetry

Abstract We discuss two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) which are invariant under gauging a non-invertible global symmetry. At every point on the orbifold branch ofc= 1 CFTs, it is known that the theory is self-dual under gauging a ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 symmetry, and has Rep(H 8 ) and Rep(D 8 ) fusion category symmetries as a result. We find that gauging the entire Rep(H 8 ) fusion category symmetry maps the orbifold theory at radiusRto that at radius 2/R. AtR=$$ \sqrt{2} $$ 2 , which corresponds to two decoupled Ising CFTs (Ising 2 in short), the theory is self-dual under gauging the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry. This implies the existence of a topological defect line in the Ising 2 CFT obtained from half-space gauging of the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry, which commutes with thec= 1 Virasoro algebra but does not preserve the fully extended chiral algebra. We bootstrap its action on thec= 1 Virasoro primary operators, and find that there are no relevant or marginal operators preserving it. Mathematically, the new topological line combines with the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry to form a bigger fusion category which is a ℤ 2 -extension of Rep(H 8 ). We solve the pentagon equations including the additional topological line and find 8 solutions, where two of them are realized in the Ising 2 CFT. Finally, we show that the torus partition functions of the Monster 2 CFT and Ising×Monster CFT are also invariant under gauging the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry.
