Overview of the LANL Double Shell Campaign [Slides]

A volume burning ignition target allows for high temperature with comparitvely lower areal density. The large number of interfaces allows for a deep investigation of the impact of hydrodynamic instabilities on implosion quality. Machine learning is currently being leveraged to improve the quality of the design. Due to the presence of high-z material we must take a deeper level of hohlraum physics into account compared to single shell designs.

Biodegradable transient battery built on core-double-shell zinc microparticle networks

A transient or biodegradable battery is provided having a filament structure that limits the speed of reaction allowing for a longer duration of battery power with a controlled current limit. In one embodiment, the filament may be constructed of zinc microparticles or nanoparticles having a thin outer insulation whereby a chemical reaction at the center core results in the progressive disintegration of the insulation revealing more core material. In one embodiment, microparticles or nanoparticles are coated with outer layers of chitosan and Al2O3 nanofilms, respectively, with designable discharge current and battery lifespan by controlling the exposed cross-sectional area of the zinc microparticle center core and the length of the filament, respectively. This novel structure of biodegradable battery provides improved control of battery life and power output, providing a promising solution to power transient medical implants.

H_Burn_Key2_Dshell_CCC: Pre-shot Report

The double shell implosion platform presents an opportunity to explore the dynamics of a burning plasma within a volumetric burn framework. The double shell campaign and the ICF program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is focused on achieving burning plasma using an indirectly driven double shell implosion at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Double shell implosion is aimed at achieving robust ignition with lower convergence, albeit introducing more engineering and physics complexity due to the intricacies of assembling the capsule. The double shell target is comprised of an outer aluminum ablator shell and an inner high-Z (made of molybdenum or tungsten) pusher shell, separated by a cushion of low-density foam. The outer shell undergoes ablation driven by hohlraum-generated x-rays, which compress the foam to immense pressures, reaching several gigabars. This creates a pressure reservoir that propels the high-Z metal pusher, compressing and heating the deuterium-tritium (DT) liquid fuel to significant densities and temperatures, thereby igniting the plasma.

Energy variation of double K -shell photoionization of Ne

Herein we report on an experimental and theoretical study of double K-shell photoionization of Ne over the 2.3–8.5 keV x-ray energy range. The ratio of double-to-single K-shell photoionization cross sections was determined experimentally by measuring the relative rates of the KK–KL 2,3 L 2,3 ( 2 D) Auger hypersatellite and the K–L 2,3 L 2,3 ( 1 D) diagram Auger transitions. By scaling the hypersatellite-diagram Auger-electron ratios to KK/K cross-section ratios, comparison was made with theoretical cross-section ratios of He-like Ne 8+ determined by the R matrix with pseudostates method. The experimental Ne and theoretical Ne 8+ cross-section ratios show similar variations with energy, but the experimental ratios systematically exceed the calculated ratios and also show a lower threshold energy for double K-shell photoionization onset compared to the computed Ne 8+ threshold. The discrepancy is attributed to effects of L-shell electrons not included in the He-like Ne 8+ calculations. Quantified scaling with nuclear charge Z along the He-like isoelectronic sequence indicates that the measured 10-electron Z = 10 double K-shell photoionization cross section behaves like the computed He-like Z = 8.9 cross section, suggesting an effective nuclear screening parameter of s L =1.1 by the additional eight outer L-shell electrons. Experimental results for the energy variations of Auger electron transitions from other multielectron hole states are also discussed.

Radchem and GRH as areal density diagnostics at NIF

It would be very useful to have a measure of the compression of the tungsten shell in double shell implosions. Two methods of doing this are: • Radchem, in which the number of atoms produced in a neutron-induced reaction on a dopant in the shell are counted (D. C. Wilson, 2017), and • GRH techniques, in which the number of g-rays produced in a (different) neutroninduced reaction on the shell material are counted (Hoffman, 2010).

“Complete Arc development for Double/Multi-Shell target designs" (Level 2 Milestone Report)

The goal of the Double Shell platform is to determine the efficacy of the shell platforms to provide a robust burn platform. One critical aspect of this is to understand the physics associated with the inner shell. In this report, we will discuss the motivation, development and results from the experimental platform to study the physics of the inner shell of a double (or multi-) shell capsule.
