Multi-Class Anomaly Detection in Flight Data using Semi-Supervised Explainable Deep Learning Model

Identifying precursor for safety incidents in aviation data is a crucial task, yet extremely challenging. The main approach, in practice, leverages domain expertise to define expected tolerances in system’s behavior and alarm exceedance from such safety margins. However, this approach is incapable of identifying unknown risk and vulnerabilities. Machine learning has been long studied and deployed to identify precursors for such anomalies, with the great challenge of the need for sufficient labelled set of data to achieve a reliable and accurate performance. In this article, we develop an explainable deep semi-supervised model for anomaly detection in aviation, building upon recent advancements in the machine learning literature. The proposed model combines feature engineering and classification in the feature space, while leveraging all available data (labelled and unlabeled). Validating on two case studies of anomaly detection in take-off and landing phases of commercial aircraft, we show that our model is able to outperform state-of-the-art supervised anomaly detection model and reach significantly high accuracy and low false alarm with minimum amount of available labelled data.

Fostering Open Science Inclusiveness for Interdisciplinary Users of Earth Observations

The term Open Science is subject to a variety of interpretations because of a key (and useful) ambiguity in the meaning of “Open”. Open in the sense of Transparency enables more trust in science research by making the details of the scientific process visible and accessible to anyone. “Open” in the sense of Inclusiveness enables more scientists from other disciplines to participate in research in a given discipline, thus producing more interdisciplinary research. Data Systems can play a major role in enabling Open (Inclusive) Science by making it easier for users from other disciplines to work with data within a given discipline. This is challenging for Earth Observation datasets, most of which are the product of advanced instrumentation and sophisticated, specialized variable retrieval algorithms and code. Serving the “extra-disciplinary”communities begins with simple things, like accessible, readable data documentation with adequate scaffolding. But just as important is provisioning Analysis-Ready data that does not require expert pre-processing. Disciplines also often have dominant toolsets, such as R in the biomass community or GIS in many applications communities. Ensuring that EO data are easy to use in the tools favored in other communities will enable more interdisciplinary research. Ideally, interdisciplinary research also benefits from scientists with different domain expertise. Platforms and frameworks that facilitate frictionless collaboration with discipline experts, together with capacity building efforts in those external disciplines also improve the inclusiveness aspect of Open Science. In short, Open Science is at root a way of thinking about how users from diverse discipline can best access and use data and services from a particular discipline.

Predicting Geologic Behavior in Carbon Storage Projects Using Graph Neural Network

This study was invited to presented at NVIDIA's GTC conference to highlight the potential of Graph Neural Network as a novel and promising methodology for predicting pressure and saturation evolution in carbon storage projects. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology plays a pivotal role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, facilitating the transition to a low-carbon future. Effective management of subsurface reservoirs is essential to ensure the safe and efficient storage of captured carbon dioxide (CO₂). Accurate predictions of pressure and saturation over time are critical for evaluating the long-term performance and integrity of CCS projects. In recent years, Graph Neural Network (GNN) has emerged as a powerful framework for analyzing complex data in graph-structured domains. This abstract explores the application of GNN to forecast pressure and saturation evolution in carbon storage projects. Traditional numerical simulations of subsurface reservoirs have proven successful in providing pressure and saturation forecasts. However, these simulations involve massive amounts of computational effort and require extensive domain expertise for proper model calibration and validation. Graph Neural Operator offers an alternative approach that harnesses the inherent graph structure of reservoirs, where nodes represent reservoir grid cells and edges represent the geological connectivity between them.

Towards Next-Generation Urban Decision Support Systems through AI-Powered Construction of Scientific Ontology Using Large Language Models—A Case in Optimizing Intermodal Freight Transportation

The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models into various optimization systems is on the rise. However, addressing complex urban and environmental management challenges often demands deep expertise in domain science and informatics. This expertise is essential for deriving data and simulation-driven insights that support informed decision-making. In this context, we investigate the potential of leveraging the pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) to create knowledge representations for supporting operations research. By adopting ChatGPT-4 API as the reasoning core, we outline an applied workflow that encompasses natural language processing, Methontology-based prompt tuning, and Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), to automate the construction of scenario-based ontologies using existing research articles and technical manuals of urban datasets and simulations. From these ontologies, knowledge graphs can be derived using widely adopted formats and protocols, guiding various tasks towards data-informed decision support. The performance of our methodology is evaluated through a comparative analysis that contrasts our AI-generated ontology with the widely recognized pizza ontology, commonly used in tutorials for popular ontology software. We conclude with a real-world case study on optimizing the complex system of multi-modal freight transportation. Our approach advances urban decision support systems by enhancing data and metadata modeling, improving data integration and simulation coupling, and guiding the development of decision support strategies and essential software components.

AMPHION: Specification-based programming for scientific subroutine libraries

AMPHION is a knowledge-based software engineering (KBSE) system that guides a user in developing a diagram representing a formal problem specification. It then automatically implements a solution to this specification as a program consisting of calls to subroutines from a library. The diagram provides an intuitive domain oriented notation for creating a specification that also facilitates reuse and modification. AMPHION'S architecture is domain independent. AMPHION is specialized to an application domain by developing a declarative domain theory. Creating a domain theory is an iterative process that currently requires the joint expertise of domain experts and experts in automated formal methods for software development.

Enhancing EV Motor Design Through Knowledge-Based AI and Hierarchical Fuzzy Logic Model

This work presents a novel approach to optimizing electric vehicle motor design through the integration of Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence (KB-AI) and Hierarchical Fuzzy Logic. Traditional motor design processes are time-intensive, relying heavily on iterative simulations and domain-specific expertise. These processes are further complicated by the nonlinear relationships between key design parameters. The proposed framework addresses these challenges by systematically encoding expert knowledge from scientific literature into a fuzzy logic system, allowing for the efficient handling of complex design variables. The hierarchical fuzzy logic model reduces computational complexity by decomposing the nonlinear relationships into manageable rule sets while maintaining design accuracy. The proposed methodology was applied to the design of a 100 kW motor, yielding optimal values for key parameters. This resulted in a compact motor design with a volume of 2.2 liters, showcasing the framework’s ability to deliver high-performance, application-specific motor configurations.
