Computational Model of Human and System Dynamics in Free Flight: Studies in Distributed Control Technologies

This paper presents a set of studies in full mission simulation and the development of a predictive computational model of human performance in control of complex airspace operations. NASA and the FAA have initiated programs of research and development to provide flight crew, airline operations and air traffic managers with automation aids to increase capacity in en route and terminal area to support the goals of safe, flexible, predictable and efficient operations. In support of these developments, we present a computational model to aid design that includes representation of multiple cognitive agents (both human operators and intelligent aiding systems). The demands of air traffic management require representation of many intelligent agents sharing world-models, coordinating action/intention, and scheduling goals and actions in a potentially unpredictable world of operations. The operator-model structure includes attention functions, action priority, and situation assessment. The cognitive model has been expanded to include working memory operations including retrieval from long-term store, and interference. The operator's activity structures have been developed to provide for anticipation (knowledge of the intention and action of remote operators), and to respond to failures of the system and other operators in the system in situation-specific paradigms. System stability and operator actions can be predicted by using the model. The model's predictive accuracy was verified using the full-mission simulation data of commercial flight deck operations with advanced air traffic management techniques.

Sensors with Intelligent Measurement Platform for Monitoring and Control in Distribution Circuits

This paper presents a medium-voltage intelligent measurement platform that provides post-processing of raw measurements received from commercially-available voltage/current sensors to enhance accuracy and bandwidth of the monitoring system. Furthermore, this platform integrates into a Data Distribution Service (DDS) messaging bus for distributed control and interoperability. The authors present the design, specifications, and major components included in the platform, and argue for applications and use cases that most benefit from this new approach. A laboratory testbed has been created to demonstrate the functionality, for which test results are presented for selected test cases.

Resilient Cooperative Voltage Control for Distribution Network with High Penetration Distributed Energy Resources

Here, this paper considers the problem of designing a resilient distributed voltage control algorithm for distribution systems with high penetration of distributed energy resources in the presence of an unknown cyber-attack. The purpose of the attack is to force the system to violate the operating voltage limit by intercepting its communication channels and inserting exogenous signals to perturb and/or modify the information being exchanged. We first review the cooperative voltage control proposed in our previous work and provide a new stability analysis for it. Next, we present a resilient cooperative voltage control algorithm by introducing a virtual system interconnected with the original system such that the voltage can be maintained within the operational limit under unknown attacks. The resiliency of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via simulations on the IEEE 8500-node system when subjected to an attack which consists of corrupting the data being exchanged in the communication network between two generation units.

Distributed Online Voltage Control in Distribution Network: A Two-Stage Real-Time Implementation

The increasing integration of renewable-based distributed generation (DG) brings growing challenges to distribution network (DN) voltage control. To address this issue, a two-stage distributed online voltage control framework (TDO-VC) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, legacy voltage control devices are controlled in the upper stage on an hourly timescale, while DGs operate autonomously online in the lower stage to remove instantaneous voltage violations. The idea of receding horizon control is applied in the upper stage to comprehensively consider the current and future renewable generation, and the generalized fast dual ascent (Gf-DA) is employed in the lower stage to effectively manage DGs through near real-time optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed TDO-VC is demonstrated by rigorous theoretical analysis and case studies on IEEE-123 bus system.

Investigation of an Intermittent Binary Control Strategy for Distributed Aerodynamic Control Devices for Load Alleviation in Wind Turbine Blades

A study was conducted of an intermittent binary control strategy for trailing edge flaps and leading edge spoilers installed on wind turbine blades for the purpose of load alleviation. Cost estimation models were developed for the systems to predict overall impact on levelized cost of energy over the lifecycle of the turbine system. Aeroelastic simulations of turbines with the control strategy implemented showed improved levelized cost for some, but not all cases.

One shot methods for optimal control of distributed parameter systems 1: Finite dimensional control

The efficient numerical treatment of optimal control problems governed by elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) and systems of elliptic PDEs, where the control is finite dimensional is discussed. Distributed control as well as boundary control cases are discussed. The main characteristic of the new methods is that they are designed to solve the full optimization problem directly, rather than accelerating a descent method by an efficient multigrid solver for the equations involved. The methods use the adjoint state in order to achieve efficient smoother and a robust coarsening strategy. The main idea is the treatment of the control variables on appropriate scales, i.e., control variables that correspond to smooth functions are solved for on coarse grids depending on the smoothness of these functions. Solution of the control problems is achieved with the cost of solving the constraint equations about two to three times (by a multigrid solver). Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the method proposed in distributed control case, pointwise control and boundary control problems.

Status, Vision, and Challenges of an Intelligent Distributed Engine Control Architecture

A Distributed Engine Control Working Group (DECWG) consisting of the Department of Defense (DoD), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center (GRC) and industry has been formed to examine the current and future requirements of propulsion engine systems. The scope of this study will include an assessment of the paradigm shift from centralized engine control architecture to an architecture based on distributed control utilizing open system standards. Included will be a description of the work begun in the 1990's, which continues today, followed by the identification of the remaining technical challenges which present barriers to on-engine distributed control.

Employing Interacting Qubits for Distributed Microgrid Control

To empower flexible and scalable operations, distributed control of multi-inverter microgrids, based on classical communication networks among distributed energy resources, has attracted considerable attention as it can guarantee synchronization and provide suitable remedies to the problem of improper power sharing. Notwithstanding this, resilience of the current schemes on classical communication makes microgrids vulnerable to cyber attacks. Inspired by recent revolutionary breakthroughs in quantum communication, in this paper, we devise a novel synchronization mechanism. We extend the synchronization framework utilized in distributed control algorithms to networks of quantum systems by generating pinning terms and coupling mechanism for the new synchronization rule via exploiting proper quantum jump operators and observables, and show that the quantum system will converge to a time-variant target state. Our devised quantum distributed controller (QDC) gives rise to a novel quantum communication scheme for distributed control of microgrids and enables microgrids to exploit the state-of-the-art quantum communication frameworks as communication infrastructure. Finally, test results on two representative AC and DC networked microgrids validate the efficacy and universality of the quantum distributed control.

Privacy-Preserving Robust Consensus for Distributed Microgrid Control Applications

Consensus-based distributed control has been proposed for coordinating distributed energy resources (DERs) in microgrids (MGs). As one key component, distributed average observers are used to estimate the average of a group of reference signals (e.g., voltage, current, or power). State-of-the-art distributed average observers could lead to loss of privacy due to information exchange on the communication channels. The DERs' reference signals, which contain private information, could be inferred by an eavesdropper. In this article, a privacy-preserving distributed average observer is proposed that is based on robust consensus and uses the state decomposition method to preserve privacy. Compared to the existing methods, the proposed observer does not require the knowledge of the reference signal's derivative and gives accurate and smooth estimation, and is thus applicable for MG distributed control applications. A detailed analysis regarding the convergence and privacy properties of the proposed observer is presented. Here, the proposed observer is implemented on hardware controllers and validated in the context of distributed MG control applications through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests.
