Direct-Current Monitor With Flux-Reset Transformer Coupling

Circuit measures constant or slowly-varying unidirectional electrical current using flux-reset transformer coupling. Measurement nonintrusive in sense that no need for direct contact with wire that carries load current to be measured, and no need to install series resistive element in load-current path. Toroidal magnetic core wrapped with coil of wire placed around load-current-carrying wire, acts as transformer core, load-current-carrying wire acts as primary winding of transformer, and coil wrapped on core acts as secondary winding.

Molecular-Level Control over Ionic Conduction and Ionic Current Direction by Designing Macrocycle-Based Ionomers

Poor ionic conductivity of the catalyst-binding, submicrometer- thick ionomer layers in energy conversion and storage devices is a huge challenge. However, ionomers are rarely designed keeping in mind the specific issues associated with nanoconfinement. Here, we designed nature-inspired ionomers (calix-2) having hollow, macrocyclic, calix[4]arene-based repeat units with precise, sub-nanometer diameter. In ≤100 nm-thick films, the in-plane proton conductivity of calix-2 was up to 8 times higher than the current benchmark ionomer Nafion at 85% relative humidity (RH), while it was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than Nafion at 20-25% RH. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and other synthetic techniques allowed us to demonstrate the role of macrocyclic cavities in boosting the proton conductivity. The systematic self-assembly of calix-2 chains into ellipsoids in thin films was evidenced from atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering measurements. Moreover, the likelihood of alignment and stacking of macrocyclic units, the presence of one-dimensional water wires across this macrocycle stacks, and thus the formation of long-range proton conduction pathways were suggested by atomistic simulations. We not only did see an unprecedented improvement in thin-film proton conductivity but also saw an improvement in proton conductivity of bulk membranes when calix-2 was added to the Nafion matrices. Nafion-calix-2 composite membranes also took advantage of the asymmetric charge distribution across calix[4]arene repeat units collectively and exhibited voltage-gating behavior. The inclusion of molecular macrocyclic cavities into the ionomer chemical structure can thus emerge as a promising design concept for highly efficient ion-conducting and ion-permselective materials for sustainable energy applications.

Direct current microplasma formation around microstructure arrays

We demonstrate the formation and transition behaviors of a microplasma around microstructure arrays at different gas pressures via two-dimensional particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations. It is found that the microdischarge occurs outside the cathode microcavities at the lowest pressure and starts penetrating the microcavities with a curved sheath edge as the pressure increases. At higher pressure, coupled periodic microhollow cathode discharges (MHCDs) are formed inside the microcavities. Further increasing the gas pressure results in the disappearance of the MHCDs, and the dominant discharge shifts outside of the microcavity, locating above the protrusion tips. The effect of the space charge shielding on the discharge and the conditions for MHCD formation are discussed. The macroscopic discharge parameter scalings with the gas pressure and the electron kinetics are also examined. The results are helpful for deeply understanding the microplasma formation with nonplanar electrodes, which inform the scaling, design, and optimization of microplasma array devices across a wide range of pressure regimes in practical applications.

Direct current magnetic Hall probe technique for measurement of field penetration in thin film superconductors for superconducting radio frequency resonators

Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities used in particle accelerators are typically formed from or coated with superconducting materials. Currently, high purity niobium is the material of choice for SRF cavities that have been optimized to operate near their theoretical field limits. This brings about the need for significant R & D efforts to develop next generation superconducting materials that could outperform Nb and keep up with the demands of new accelerator facilities. To achieve high quality factors and accelerating gradients, the cavity material should be able to remain in the superconducting Meissner state under a high RF magnetic field without penetration of quantized magnetic vortices through the cavity wall. Therefore, the magnetic field at which vortices penetrate a superconductor is one of the key parameters of merit of SRF cavities. Techniques to measure the onset of magnetic field penetration on thin film samples need to be developed to mitigate the issues with the conventional magnetometry measurements that are strongly influenced by the film orientation and shape and edge effects. In this work, we report the development of an experimental setup to measure the field of full flux penetration through films and multi-layered superconductors. Our system combines a small superconducting solenoid that can generate a magnetic field of up to 500 mT at the sample surface and three Hall probes to detect the full flux penetration through the superconductor. We report this setup can be used to study alternative materials that could potentially outperform niobium, as well as superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) multilayer coatings on niobium.

Effect of net direct current on the properties of radio frequency sheaths: simulation and cross-code comparison

In order to understand, predict and control ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) interactions with tokamak scrape-off layer plasmas, computational tools which can model radio frequency (RF) sheaths are needed. In particular, models for the effective surface impedance and DC rectified sheath potentials may be coupled with full wave RF simulation codes to predict self-consistent wave fields near surfaces and the resulting power dissipation and plasma-material interactions from ion sputtering. In this study, previous work assuming zero net DC current flow through the sheath is generalized to allow the surface to collect net positive or negative current, as is often observed in experiments. The waveforms, DC potential and RF admittance are investigated by means of analytical theory, nonlinear fluid and particle-in-cell (PIC) codes. Cross-code comparisons provide detailed model verification and elucidate the roles of ion and electron kinetics. When the sheath draws negative (positive) DC current, the voltage rectification is reduced (increased) compared with the zero-current case, and the magnitude of both the real and imaginary parts of the admittance are increased (reduced). In conclusion, a previous four-input parametrization of the sheath rectification and admittance properties is generalized to include a fifth parameter describing the DC sheath current.

Optimization of boron carbide density using direct current sintering for use as sputtering sources at the National Ignition Facility

Several experimental trials were conducted to determine optimal sintering parameters and compositions for purchased boron carbide powder using spark plasma sintering/direct current sintering. Sputtering targets used to create ablators for the National Ignition Facility have been unable to survive post processing procedures suggesting that in-house fabrication may yield better results due to extended control.
