Measurement of proton, deuteron, triton, and α particle emission after nuclear muon capture on Al, Si, and Ti with the AlCap experiment

Heavy charged particles after nuclear muon capture are an important nuclear physics background to the muon-to-electron conversion experiments Mu2e and COMET, which will search for charged lepton flavor violation at an unprecedented level of sensitivity. Here, the AlCap experiment aimed to measure the yield and energy spectra of protons, deuterons, tritons, and α particles emitted after the nuclear capture of muons stopped in Al, Si, and Ti in the low-energy range relevant for the muon-to-electron conversion experiments. Individual charged particle types were identified in layered silicon detector packages and their initial energy distributions were unfolded from the observed energy spectra.

Structure studies of 13 Be from the 12 Be ⁢(𝑑,𝑝) reaction in inverse kinematics on a solid deuteron target

The low-lying structure of 13 Be has remained an enigma for decades. Despite numerous experimental and theoretical studies, large inconsistencies remain. Being both unbound and one neutron away from 14 Be, the heaviest bound beryllium nucleus, 13 Be is difficult to study through simple reactions with weak radioactive-ion beams or more complex reactions with stable-ion beams. Here, we present the results of a study using the 12 Be (𝑑,𝑝)⁢ 13 Be reaction in inverse kinematics using a 9.5 MeV per nucleon 12 Be beam from the ISAC-II facility. The solid deuteron target of IRIS was used to achieve an increased areal thickness compared to conventional deuterated polyethylene targets. The 𝑄-value spectrum below −4.4 MeV was analyzed using a Bayesian method with geant4 simulations. A three-point angular distribution with the same 𝑄-value gate was fit with a mixture of 𝑠- and 𝑝-wave, 𝑠- and 𝑑-wave, or pure 𝑝-wave transfer. The 𝑄-value spectrum was also compared with geant simulations obtained using the energies and widths of states reported in four previous works. As a result, it was found that our results are incompatible with works that revealed a wide 5/2 + resonance but shows better agreement with ones that reported a narrower width.

Cold neutron-deuteron capture and Wigner-SU(4) symmetry

We calculate the cold neutron-deuteron (nd) capture cross section,σ nd to next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) using the model-independent approach of pionless effective-field theory [EFT(π)]. At leading order we find σ nd = 0.314 ± 0.217 mb, while the experimental result is 0.508(15) mb for a laboratory neutron velocity of 2200 m/s. At next-to-leading-order (NLO), we show that σnd is sensitive to the low-energy constant (LEC) $L$$^{(0)}_{1}$ of the two-nucleon isovector current appearing at NLO. A fit of $L$$^{(0)}_{1}$ at NLO to the triton magnetic moment yields a NLO prediction of σ nd = 0.393 ± 0.164 mb, where the error comes from propagating the error from the $L$$^{(0)}_{1}$ fit. At NNLO, we find that a new three-nucleon magnetic moment counterterm is required for renormalization-group invariance of both σnd and the triton magnetic moment. Fitting the NNLO correction to $L$$^{(0)}_{1}$ (denoted $L$$^{(1)}_{1}$) to cold neutron-proton capture (σnp) yields a NNLO prediction of σ nd = 0.447 ± 0.130 mb, where the error comes from propagating the error from the $L$$^{(1)}_{1}$ fit. We also study different fittings of $L$$^{(0)}_{1}$ and $L$$^{(1)}_{1}$ to σ np , σ nd , and/or the triton magnetic moment. For example, fitting $L$$^{(0)}_{1}$ simultaneously to σ np , σ nd , and the triton magnetic moment at NLO, and fitting $L$$^{(1)}_{1}$ simultaneously to σ np and σnd at NNLO, yields σ nd = 0.480 ± 0.114 mb and 0.511 ± 0.042 mb, respectively, where errors are naively estimated from EFT(π) power counting. Additionally, we discuss how Wigner SU(4) symmetry may alter the naive EFT(π) expansion of σ nd .

Role of three-body dynamics in nucleon-deuteron correlation functions

Correlation functions of hadrons can be accessed in high-energy collisions of atomic nuclei, revealing information about the underlying interaction. This work complements experimental efforts to study nucleon-deuteron Nd—with N=p (proton) or N=n (neutron)—correlations with theory evaluations using different techniques. The correlation functions C nd and C pd are calculated based on a scattering wave function, extending previous benchmarks for the Nd scattering matrix to this new observable. We use hyperspherical harmonics and Faddeev techniques with one of the widely used nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions, the Argonne v18 potential. Moreover, in the low-energy region we perform additional calculations in the framework of pionless effective field theory. The pd correlation function is computed in the large-energy region to make contact with a recent measurement by the ALICE Collaboration. We show that the scattering wave function has the proper dynamical input to describe an initial rise and subsequent oscillations of C pd as a function of the energy. Effects on the observables using different NN and three-nucleon potentials are evaluated with the conclusion that variations of around 2% are observed. Although these effects are small, future measurements can go beyond this accuracy, allowing for new detailed studies of strong interaction in light nuclear systems. Furthermore, the present study supports the current efforts devoted to the measurement of correlation functions in systems dominated by the strong interactions, such as pd, ppp, Λd, and ppΛ.

Cross sections for the formation of Rb84m,g, Rb83, and Rb82m in Sr86(d,x) reactions up to deuteron energies of 49 MeV: Competition between α-particle and multinucleon emission processes

Cross sections of Sr86(d,x) reactions leading to the products Rb84m,g, Rb83, and Rb82m were measured by the stacked-sample activation technique up to deuteron energies of 49 MeV. Nuclear model calculations were performed using the codes talys and empire, which combine the statistical, precompound, and direct interaction components. In all cases, the empire results were much higher than the talys calculation. Fairly good agreement was obtained between measured data and the talys calculation after some optimization of the input model parameters. Insight into competition between α-particle and multinucleon emission in the Y88 compound-nucleus system was also gained.

Search for the production of deuterons and antideuterons in e + e − annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 4.13 and 4.70 GeV

Using a data sample of e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19 fb − 1 collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the production of deuterons and antideuterons via e + e − → p p π − d ¯ + c . c . for the first time at center-of-mass energies between 4.13 and 4.70 GeV. No significant signal is observed and the upper limit of the e + e − → p p π − d ¯ + c . c . cross section is determined to be from 9.0 to 145 fb depending on the center-of-mass energy at the 90% confidence level. Renormalization group analysis of electromagnetic properties of the deuteron

The role of radiative corrections in low-energy nuclear physics is beginning to receive more scrutiny. We examine the impact of these corrections for the deuteron charge form factor and the radiative capture process np→dγ through the velocity renormalization group. In both cases, we find percent-level shifts in the relevant observables after evolving the subtraction velocity to the typical velocity of nucleons in the bound state. This suggests that electromagnetic corrections constitute a non-negligible source of uncertainty in existing few-body calculations.

Cascade Models in Simulation of Extended Heavy Targets Irradiated by Accelerated Proton and Deuteron Beams

The paper presents a survey of the main numerical models used for simulation of interaction of accelerated particle beams with target nuclei. These models form the core of the software for simulation of various experiments and experimental facilities both for scientific and applied purposes. The beam and target parameters considered in detail in this study (protons and deuterons with energies from 0.66 to 4 AGeV and bulk U targets) cover the range of interest in development of new concepts of nuclear power production aided by accelerated particle beams.

Complex deuteron NMR signals

To determine the spin polarization of deuterons, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used. This is necessary for polarized targets, such as for the upcoming A zz and b 1 experiment at Jefferson Lab. NMR measures the impedance of a solenoid around a deuterated sample. Although the impedance is a complex value, conventionally only the real part of the impedance has been used for this purpose. However, often the tune is not precisely real, meaning the signal has at least some small imaginary portion. This conventionally has been dealt with by an offset parameter, such as Dulya’s false asymmetry method. For vector polarization, this suffices, as the tuning is factored into the overall error of the results, and for a small phase angle doesn’t make much of a difference. However, for tensor polarization, the exact lineshape of the signal is quite significant, and treating the impedance as complex during analysis removes the need for an offset parameter. As a result, it also provides more accurate results, as the conventional false asymmetry method over- or underestimates polarization, depending on the sign of the phase angle.

Excitation functions of some deuteron-induced nuclear reactions on Al

Here, excitation functions of the reactions 27 Al(d,αp) 24 Na, 27 Al(d,2p) 27 Mg and 27 Al(d,p) 28 Al were measured by the activation technique up to deuteron energies of 37 MeV. The available experimental databases of the reaction products 27 Mg and 28 Al were extended and compared with the nuclear model calculations based on the code TALYS-1.8. Our measured data are reproduced well by the model calculations after adjustment of a few free input parameters. The cross-section ratio of the (d,αp) to (d,2p) process as a function of projectile energy was deduced from the measured data, and the result is interpreted in terms of competition between a proton and an α-particle emission.

MuSun - Muon Capture on the Deuteron

The MuSun experiment is a precision measurement of the rate for nuclear muon capture on the deuteron, designed to resolve a long-standing disagreement between experiment and theory, and to determine an important low-energy constant relevant for a variety of weak and strong dynamics. The experiment is based on a novel active target method employing a pure deuterium cryogenic time-projection chamber. The data taking was completed in two main campaigns and the analysis is well advanced. The unique challenges and corresponding strategy of the experiment as well as the status of the analysis are presented.

A study of charge symmetry violation in fragmentation functions extracted from semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions from protons and deuterons

We have measured the flavor dependence of multiplicities for ?+ and ?? production in semi- inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on proton and deuteron targets. We used a 10.6 GeV electron beam at Jefferson Lab, and 4 msr solid angle spectrometers (HMS for electrons, SHMS for pions), the lepton vertex spanned the kinematic range 0.3 < ? < 0.6, 2 < ?2 < 5 GeV2, and 4 < ?2 < 11 GeV2. The pion fractional momentum range was 0.3 < ? < 0.7 and the small transverse momentum range was 0 < ?? < 0.25 GeV. We used the multiplicities to form sum-and- difference ratios, testing the validity of factorization. We extracted two favored and two unfavored flavor-dependent fragmentation functions (FFs) using these multiplicities. Assuming factorization at low ?? , we find that these two FFs allow for isospin breaking (charge symmetry violation) at low ?, while converging to a common flavor independent value at the highest ? of this experiment, where the factorization is most applicable.

Single $\pi ^0$ production off neutrons bound in deuteron with linearly polarized photons

The quasifree γ → d → π 0 n(p) photon beam asymmetry, Σ, has been measured at photon energies, E γ , from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49° to 148°. In this kinematic region, polarization observables are sensitive to contributions from the Δ(1232) and N(1440) resonances. The extracted values of Σ have been compared to predictions based on partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the existing pion photoproduction database. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID and Bonn–Gatchina analyses; while a revised SAID fit, including the new Σ measurements, has also been performed. In addition, isospin symmetry is examined as a way to predict π 0 n photoproduction observables, based on fits to published data in the channels π 0 p, π + n and π – p.

Muon capture on deuteron using local chiral potentials

The muon capture reaction μ – + d → n + n + ν μ in the doublet hyperfine state is studied using nuclear potentials and consistent currents derived in the chiral effective field theory, which are local and expressed in coordinate space (the so-called Norfolk models). Only the largest contribution due to the 1 S 0 nn scattering state is considered. Particular attention is given to the estimate of theoretical uncertainty, for which four sources have been identified: 1) the model dependence, 2) the chiral-order convergence for the weak nuclear current, 3) the uncertainty in the single-nucleon axial form factor, and 4) the numerical technique adopted to solve the bound and scattering A = 2 systems. This last source of uncertainty has turned out to be essentially negligible. For the 1 S 0 doublet muon capture rate Γ D ( 1 S 0 ), we obtain Γ D ( 1 S 0 ) = 255.8(0.6) (4.4)(2.9) s –1 , where the three errors come from the first three sources of uncertainty. The value for Γ D ( 1 S 0 ) obtained within this local chiral framework is compared with previous calculations and found in very good agreement.

Proton- and deuteron-induced cross sections on natural platinum

Light-ion irradiations on natural platinum were performed to measure gold-radioisotope cross sections and isotope ratios, as well as to produce a carrier-free final product. Experimental cross sections are compared to TENDL-2023. There is good agreement with this work's results and other published literature values. In conclusion, several novel cross sections were determined including 190 Au, 191 Au, 199 Pt and several independent cross sections.
