On the design of decoupling controllers for advanced rotorcraft in the hover case

A methodology for design of helicopter control systems is proposed that can account for various types of concurrent specifications: stability, decoupling between longitudinal and lateral motions, handling qualities, and physical limitations of the swashplate motions. This is achieved by synergistic use of analytical techniques (Q-parameterization of all stabilizing controllers, transfer function interpolation) and advanced numerical optimization techniques. The methodology is used to design a controller for the UH-60 helicopter in hover. Good results are achieved for decoupling and handling quality specifications.

Decoupled predictions of radiative heating in air using a particle simulation method

A particle simulation technique with decoupled radiation is used to estimate the radiative emission along the stagnation streamline and the radiative heating at the stagnation point of a blunt-nosed vehicle entering the earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speed. The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to compute the fluid mechanics of the weakly ionized flow. The radiative emission is computed using the NEQAIR computer code with the radiation decoupled from the flowfield solution. It is concluded that the new models make it possible to decrease the predicted total radiative heating at the stagnation point of the vehicle by a factor of 15. A comparison of the DSMC approach with a continuum flow model shows that the total predicted radiative heating estimates agree within a factor of 2.

Decentralized control of large flexible structures by joint decoupling

A decentralized control design method is presented for large complex flexible structures by using the idea of joint decoupling. The derivation is based on a coupled substructure state-space model, which is obtained from enforcing conditions of interface compatibility and equilibrium to the substructure state-space models. It is shown that by restricting the control law to be localized state feedback and by setting the joint actuator input commands to decouple joint 'degrees of freedom' (dof) from interior dof, the global structure control design problem can be decomposed into several substructure control design problems. The substructure control gains and substructure observers are designed based on modified substructure state-space models. The controllers produced by the proposed method can operate successfully at the individual substructure level as well as at the global structure level. Therefore, not only control design but also control implementation is decentralized. Stability and performance requirement of the closed-loop system can be achieved by using any existing state feedback control design method. A two-component mass-spring damper system and a three-truss structure are used as examples to demonstrate the proposed method.

Construction and parameterization of all static and dynamic H2-optimal state feedback solutions, optimal fixed modes, and fixed decoupling zeros

This paper considers an H2 optimization problem via state feedback. The class of problems dealt with here are general singular type which have a left invertible transfer matrix function from the control input to the controlled output. This class subsumes the regular H2 optimization problems. The paper constructs and parameterizes all the static and dynamic H2 optimal state feedback solutions. Moreover, all the eigenvalues of an optimal closed-loop system are characterized. All optimal closed-loop systems share a set of eigenvalues which are termed here as the optimal fixed modes. Every H2 optimal controller must assign among the closed-loop eigenvalues the set of optimal fixed modes. This set of optimal fixed modes includes a set of optimal fixed decoupling zeros which shows the minimum absolutely necessary number and locations of pole-zero cancellations present in any H2 optimal design. It is shown that both the sets of optimal fixed modes and optimal fixed decoupling zeros do not vary depending upon whether the static or the dynamic controllers are used.

Task definition, decoupling and redundancy resolution by nonlinear feedback in multi-robot object handling

The problem of rigid object handling by multiple robot arms is investigated. The primary goal is to make the object exhibit a prescribed behavior while in contact with a fully known environment. Point contacts are assumed between the object and the arms. The aspect of task definition to achieve decoupling and linearizing control laws is discussed. Control laws are first formulated at the object level to provide decoupled force and position servo loops. It is then used to form control laws for the individual arms. Redundancies exist at the object and arm levels. The object level redundancy is used to achieve secondary goals in object handling. The arm level redundancies are the zero dynamics and can be controlled by redundant inputs. Full use of the available inputs are used to control the system as a whole. Numerical simulations for a dual-arm situation illustrate the validity of the approach.

Decoupled Method for Reconstruction of Surface Conditions From Internal Temperatures On Ablative Materials With Uncertain Recession Model

Obtaining measurements of flight environments on ablative heat shields is both critical for spacecraft development and extremely challenging due to the harsh heating environment and surface recession. Thermocouples installed several millimeters below the surface are commonly used to measure the heat shield temperature response, but an ill-posed inverse heat conduction problem must be solved to reconstruct the surface heating environment from these measurements. Ablation can contribute substantially to the measurement response making solutions to the inverse problem strongly dependent on the recession model, which is often poorly characterized. To enable efficient surface reconstruction for recession model sensitivity analysis, a method for decoupling the surface recession evaluation from the inverse heat conduction problem is presented. The decoupled method is shown to provide reconstructions of equivalent accuracy to the traditional coupled method but with substantially reduced computational effort. These methods are applied to reconstruct the environments on the Mars Science Laboratory heat shield using diffusion limit and kinetically limited recession models.

Dynamical Decoupling for Measuring and Suppressing Crosstalk

Dynamical decoupling (DD) is a noise-mitigating strategy in which sequences of pulses are applied to single qubits to average out their interaction with the environment. DD has been extensively studied and demonstrated for suppressing single-qubit decoherence and can be tailored for different noise spectrum. We report another important adaptation of DD where crosstalk between qubits are suppressed. We demonstrate the efficiency of this procedure on quantum circuits on superconducting transmon-based quantum devices. We designed a family of syncopated DD sequences that effectively suppress ZZ coupling between qubit pairs, which is the dominating crosstalk form on the device. We insert DD to a quantum circuit whenever single qubits are idle (often during two-qubits gates on other qubits). While standard periodic DD suppress crosstalk between these qubits and their neighbors, the syncopated DD further decouples crosstalk between these qubits. We further designed short sequences that maximize the application of DD without adding time to the quantum circuit execution. Such DD sequences yield significant improvement of the performance of the algorithm on the hardware. The performance is further boosted by combining DD with another mitigation strategy, randomized compilation. Our work demonstrated that syncopated DD is effective and practical way to suppress crosstalk in quantum circuits and serves as a great probe to characterize the crosstalk and inform hardware design.
