de Sitter's theory 'melts' Europa's polar cap

In photoelectric observations of a series of occultations of the Jovian satellite Europa by the Jovian satellite Io it was observed that increasingly larger fractions of the north polar region of the former were covered at mid-event with each successive occultation. One of the possible explanations of the observed phenomena involves the existence of a bright north polar cap for Europa. The reported investigation shows that a second explanation may be more plausible. This explanation is related to the possibility that at mid-event the projected minimum distance between the centers of the satellites was smaller than predicted by Sampson's theory.

de Sitter's theory flattens Jupiter

The discrepancy between values of Jupiter's dynamic oblateness as measured by space probes and via 1971 beta Sco occultations is re-examined. The indicated correction to the Io ephemeris is compared to corrections proposed by Aksnes and Franklin (1975, 1976). It is found that the latter corrections reduce the above discrepancy to a marginal level.

New test of general relativity - Measurement of de Sitter geodetic precession rate for lunar perigee

According to general relativity, the calculated rate of motion of lunar perigee should include a contribution of 19.2 msec/yr from geodetic precession. It is shown that existing analyses of lunar-laser-ranging data confirm the general-relativistic rate for geodetic precession with respect to the planetary dynamical frame. In addition, the comparison of earth-rotation results from lunar laser ranging and from VLBI shows that the relative drift of the planetary dynamical frame and the extragalactic VLBI reference frame is small. The estimated accuracy is about 10 percent.

A unified system for Coleman–De Luccia transitions

Highlights: • Monotonicity controls whether radius of CDL bounce is negative mode direction. • Decays from de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter analyzed in single geometric framework. • de Sitter to Anti-de Sitter instantons come in two types, similar to type-A vs type-B. We show that the presence or absence of negative modes associated with the expansion or contraction of Coleman–De Luccia instantons is controlled by the monotonicity properties of a single function parameterized by the tension and two vacuum energies. This approach simplifies and unifies certain aspects of phase transitions between two de Sitter vacua, between two Anti-de Sitter, and between one of each. This strategy may serve as a guide for identifying negative modes in more complicated gravitational theories, for instance supergravity.

Geometries with mismatched branes

We study Randall-Sundrum two brane setups with mismatched brane tensions. For the vacuum solutions, boundary conditions demand that the induced metric on each of the branes is either de Sitter, Anti-de Sitter, or Minkowski. For incompatible boundary conditions, the bulk metric is necessarily time-dependent. This introduces a new class of time-dependent solutions with the potential to address cosmological issues and provide alternatives to conventional inflationary (or contracting) scenarios. We take a first step in this paper toward such solutions. One important finding is that the resulting solutions can be very succinctly described in terms of an effective action involving only the induced metric on either one of the branes and the radion field. But the full geometry cannot necessarily be simply described with a single coordinate patch. We concentrate here on the time- dependent solutions but argue that supplemented with a brane stabilization mechanism one can potentially construct interesting cosmological models this way. This is true both with and without a brane stabilization mechanism.

Can magnetogenesis driven by dynamo instabilities in chiral fermion plasmas, favor Einstein–Cartan AdS cosmology?

In this letter we show that the magnetic field (MF) bounds induced by Einstein–Cartan–de Sitter (EC) with AdS anti-de Sitter spacetime geometry and fermionic torsion with chiral dynamo plasmas instabilities, with inhomogeneous uniform chiral chemical potential, indicates that there is a possibility, as far as magnetogenesis is concerned, that we may obtain more stringent results within ECAdS gravity, compared with general relativity (GR) limits obtained by Tsagas using torsionless magnetogenesis. Spinorial fermionic source with torsion induces a chiral plasmas oscillation. The time dependent chiral chemical potential, sometimes associated formally with torsion, (de Andrade, 2018), is obtained from chiral flipping equation. The MFs obtained from the present universe ECdS chiral dynamo model, meet the criteria of galactic seed fields with better limits within Tsagas range (Tsagas, 2015) seed galactic magnetic fields for dynamo mechanisms, than the bound obtained by chiral dynamos in torsionless AdS cosmology. Majorana neutrinos are used as spatial components of axial spin-torsion source of dynamo instability from neutrino asymmetry.

Global aspects of conformal symmetry and the ANEC in dS and AdS

Starting from the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski we show that conformal symmetry implies the ANEC for a conformal field theory (CFT) in a de Sitter and anti-de Sitter background. A similar and novel bound is also obtained for a CFT in the Lorentzian cylinder. Using monotonicity of relative entropy, we rederive these results for dS and the cylinder. As a byproduct we obtain the vacuum modular Hamiltonian and entanglement entropy associated to null deformed regions of CFTs in (A)dS and the cylinder. A third derivation of the ANEC in dS is shown to follow from bulk causality in AdS/CFT. Finally, we use the Tomita-Takesaki theory to show that Rindler positivity of Minkowski correlators generalizes to conformal theories defined in dS and the cylinder.

Building models of inflation in no-scale supergravity

After reviewing the motivations for cosmological inflation formulated in the formalism of supersymmetry, we argue that the appropriate framework is that of no-scale supergravity. We then show how to construct within this framework inflationary models whose predictions for the tilt in the spectrum of scalar perturbations, n s , and the ratio, r, of tensor and scalar perturbations coincide with those of the R+R 2 model of inflation proposed by Starobinsky. Here, a more detailed study of no-scale supergravity reveals a structure that is closely related to that of R 2 modifications of the minimal Einstein–Hilbert action for general relativity, opening avenues for constructing no-scale de Sitter and anti-de Sitter models by combining pairs of Minkowski models, as well as generalizations of the original no-scale Starobinsky models of inflation.

Equivalence of EFTs and timelike extra dimensions

A flat 3-brane probing a five-dimensional anti–de Sitter space has the same symmetries and symmetry breaking pattern as one probing a five-dimensional de Sitter space with two time directions. Despite the seemingly different physical setups, we show that the effective field theory of the brane bending mode is identical in both cases. In particular, despite “wrong” signs in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action for the two-time de Sitter case, the theories have the same S -matrix. This is consistent with the expectation that effective field theories are determined solely by their degrees of freedom and pattern of symmetry breaking, even in the case of spacetime symmetries. We comment further on the equivalence between the Weyl/dilaton and DBI representations of the EFT of broken conformal symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Light scalars at the cosmological collider

We study the self-energies of weakly interacting scalar fields in de Sitter space with one field much lighter than the Hubble scale. We argue that self-energies drastically simplify in this light limit. We illustrate this in theories with two scalar fields, one heavy and one light, interacting with one another through either cubic or quartic interactions. To regulate infrared divergences, we compute these self-energies in Euclidean de Sitter space and then carefully analytically continue to Lorentzian signature. In particular, we do this for the most general renormalizable theory of two scalar fields with even interactions to leading order in the coupling and the mass of the light field. These self-energies are determined by de Sitter sunset diagrams, whose analytic structure and UV divergences we derive. Even at very weak couplings, the light field can substantially change how the heavy field propagates over long distances. The light field’s existence may then be inferred from how it modifies the heavy field’s oscillatory contribution to the primordial bispectrum in the squeezed limit, i.e. its cosmological collider signal.

Multi-Galileons in curved space

Using the probe brane construction of higher derivative effective field theories, extended to higher co-dimensions and curved spaces, we construct galileon and DBI theories on de Sitter space with N fields and an so (N) internal symmetry, non-linearly realizing the symmetries of a higher dimensional de Sitter space. In some cases, the theory admits a non-trivial vacuum that spontaneously breaks the so (N) symmetry, and around this vacuum the Goldstone modes have vanishing kinetic terms and become infinitely strongly coupled. This gives an example of a scalar effective field theory with two de Sitter vacua, one of which appears to have Boulware-Deser-like ghosts, and one of which does not.
