Effect of Interhemispheric Currents on Equivalent Ionospheric Currents in Two Hemispheres: Simulation Results

In this research, we used numerical simulation to study the effect of interhemispheric field-aligned currents (IHCs), going between two conjugate ionospheres in two hemispheres, on the equivalent ionospheric currents (EICs). We computed the maps of these EICs In two hemispheres during summer-winter conditions, when the effect of the IHCs is especially significant. The main results may be summarized as follows. In winter hemisphere, the IHCs may significantly exceed and be a substitute for the local R1 currents, and they may strongly affect the magnitude, location, and direction of the EICs In the nightside winter auroral ionosphere. While in summer polar cap the EICs tend to flow sunward, and in winter polar cap the EICs turn toward dawn due to the effect of the IHCs. The well-known reversal in the direction of the EICs in the vicinity of the midnight meridian, in winter hemisphere, is observed not at the polar caps boundary (as usually expected) but equatorward of this boundary in the region of the IHCs location. The IHCs in winter hemisphere may be, in fact, not only a substitute for the R1 currents but also the major source of the Westward Auroral Electrojet, observed In both hemispheres during substorm activity.

Critical Clearing Time for Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters With Circular Current Limiting and Virtual Impedance Current Limiting

The critical clearing time is a crucial parameter for assessing the large-signal stability of grid-forming (GFM) inverters. Variations in current limiters can significantly impact an inverter's transient behavior during large disturbances. Here, this letter introduces a method based on the power-angle relationship to evaluate the fault recovery of a droop-controlled GFM inverter under a three-phase bolted fault scenario, considering both the circular current limiter and the virtual impedance method. High-fidelity simulations validate the accuracy of the proposed formulas in estimating the critical clearing time of the GFM inverter.

The effect of electrical current on premature failures and microstructural degradation in bearing steel

Premature failures associated with microstructural degradation, i.e. white etching cracks (WECS), are becoming commonplace as applications are requiring tribological components to operate under extreme conditions. Although the specific drivers of WECs are still debated, the failures are often found in applications where cyclic loading is combined with added energy from stressors such as slip, impacts, or stray current. The aim of the current work is to elucidate effect that variable current has on premature failure. Numerous commercially available lubricants were tested, and both lubricant base oil type and additive package were found to have an effect on WEC failure time.

Water limiting current measurements in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs); part 1: Water limiting current method development

We report water management is critical in optimizing anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFCs) performance and durability. The role of membranes on determining cell water balance in AEMFCs has received limited study. A more thorough understanding of membrane water transport parameters is necessary for thorough cell optimization. In this study, a novel method for probing limiting current based on water flux across an AEMFC is presented for the first time. The water limiting current has been investigated as a function of relative humidity of anode and cathode streams, cathode backpressure and cell operating temperature. From these studies, it is clearly shown that water diffusion through the membrane from the anode is the most critical mechanism for achieving high current density performance and durability. The developed method can act as a novel screening technique that focuses on the impacts of water transport parameters and helps identify promising membrane materials based on their water transport properties. A critical but underappreciated facet of AEMFC performance and durability.

Thin Cation-Exchange Layers Enable High-Current-Density Bipolar Membrane Electrolyzers via Improved Water Transport

With suitable water dissociation (WD) catalysts, bipolar membranes (BPMs) can efficiently dissociate water into H + and OH – at the junction between anion- and cation-exchange layers (AEL and CEL, respectively). First, however, water must be transported through the AEL or CEL and thus against the outward flow of hydrated H + and OH – . This is a challenge intrinsic to the BPM architecture and limits operation to current densities typically less than ~0.5 A·cm –2 . Here we explore how water transport affects durability and performance in reference alkaline and acidic membrane electrolyzers, and we use the insight gained to design BPMs with improved water transport. We demonstrate a thin-CEL BPM (2-μm Nafion CEL|~200 nm TiO 2 |~200 nm NiO + ionomer|50 μm Sustainion AEL) which maintains a pH difference of ~14 units between the anode and cathode for current densities of up to 3.4 A·cm –2 with a total water electrolysis voltage of ~4 V and an estimated WD overpotential of ~1.5 V. Finally, such high-current-density operation is crucial for key emerging BPM applications, including in water and carbon-dioxide electrolyzers and in (regenerative) fuel cells.

Study on Conversion from an Existing Alternating Current Medium-Voltage Line to a Direct Current Line: A Case of Load or Source Expansion

Simultaneous increase of power generation through renewable systems and load due owing to the rapid growth in electrified road transportation systems, leads to new challenges in the design, operation, and protection of distribution-level electrical power systems. This paper addresses challenges related to the integration of new sources or loads to a distribution grid through long alternating current lines. The International Council on Large Electric Systems medium-voltage benchmark model developed for North America was used for simulation studies. Use cases were developed to illuminate the issues related to long alternating current lines and the usefulness of medium-voltage direct current lines in a distribution network.

Experiments on current-driven three-dimensional ion sound turbulence. I - Return-current limited electron beam injection. II - Wave dynamics

Pulsed electron beam injection into a weakly collisional magnetized background plasma is investigated experimentally; properties of the electron beam and background plasma, as well as the low-frequency instabilities and wave dynamics, are discussed. The current of the injected beam closes via a field-aligned return current of background electrons. Through study of the frequency and wavenumber distribution, together with the electron distribution function, the low-frequency instabilities associated with the pulsed injection are identified as ion acoustic waves driven unstable by the return current. The frequency cut-off of the instabilities predicted from renormalized plasma turbulence theory, has been verified experimentally.

Explorations of electric current system in solar active regions. I - Empirical inferences of the current flows

Techniques to identify sources of electric current systems and their channels of flow in solar active regions are explored. Measured photospheric vector magnetic fields together with high-resolution white-light and H-alpha filtergrams provide the data base to derive the current systems in the photosphere and chromosphere. As an example, the techniques are then applied to infer current systems in AR 2372 in early April 1980.

Comparison of shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler and moored current measurements in the Equatorial Pacific

Depth-averaged current shears computed from shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and moored Savonius rotor and vane vector-averaging current meter (VACM) measurements are compared at 35, 62.5, 100 and 140 m depths within 7 km of each other near 0 deg, 140 deg W during a 12-day interval in November 1984. The agreement between the VACM and ADCP shears was excellent. The average root-mean-square difference of hourly shear values was small, approximately 0.0021/s, and the average correlation coefficient was 0.90. Spectral estimates were equivalent to within a 95 percent significance level and the VACM and ADCP shears were 95 percent statistically coherent with zero phase difference for frequencies below 0.2 cycles per hour.

A linearly controlled direct-current power source for high-current inductive loads in a magnetic suspension wind tunnel

The NASA Langley 6 inch magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) requires an independently controlled bidirectional DC power source for each of six positioning electromagnets. These electromagnets provide five-degree-of-freedom control over a suspended aerodynamic test model. Existing power equipment, which employs resistance coupled thyratron controlled rectifiers as well as AC to DC motor generator converters, is obsolete, inefficient, and unreliable. A replacement six phase bidirectional controlled bridge rectifier is proposed, which employs power MOSFET switches sequenced by hybrid analog/digital circuits. Full load efficiency is 80 percent compared to 25 percent for the resistance coupled thyratron system. Current feedback provides high control linearity, adjustable current limiting, and current overload protection. A quenching circuit suppresses inductive voltage impulses. It is shown that 20 kHz interference from positioning magnet power into MSBS electromagnetic model position sensors results predominantly from capacitively coupled electric fields. Hence, proper shielding and grounding techniques are necessary. Inductively coupled magnetic interference is negligible.

Current-driven plasma acceleration versus current-driven energy dissipation. I - Wave stability theory

The dominant unstable electrostatic wave modes of an electromagnetically accelerated plasma are investigated. The study is the first part of a three-phase program aimed at characterizing the current-driven turbulent dissipation degrading the efficiency of Lorentz force plasma accelerators such as the MPD thruster. The analysis uses a kinetic theory that includes magnetic and thermal effects as well as those of an electron current transverse to the magnetic field and collisions, thus combining all the features of previous models. Analytical and numerical solutions allow a detailed description of threshold criteria, finite growth behavior, destabilization mechanisms and maximized-growth characteristics of the dominant unstable modes. The lower hybrid current-driven instability is implicated as dominant and was found to preserve its character in the collisional plasma regime.

Current collection and current closure in the Tethered Satellite System

Current collection and closure-path modeling are examined analytically with respect to the Tethered Satellite System (TSS). A particle-in cell code is compared with a one-dimensional unmagnetized fluid code to model the behavior of a positively charged satellite in the ionosphere. The morphology of the sheath and the sheath-region processes are thus examined, and the influence of ions leaving the sheath region is found to cause the attraction of an electron current that is 40 times greater than the steady state value. The enhancement is transient and enhances the acceleration of the electrons in the sheath. A set of modified MHD equations, including those for ion inertia, quasineutrality, and electron drift, is employed to model TSS current closure. Whistler modes are found to exist and can be excited as the TSS passes through the ionosphere. Important conclusions include a significant fluctuation level in the steady state sheath, an ion void which affects the electron population, and some long-lived electrons trapped in the settled sheath with respect to two directions.

Observational support for the current sheet catastrophe model of substorm current disruption

The principles of the current sheet catastrophe models are briefly reviewed, and observations of some of the signatures predicted by the theory are presented. The data considered here include AMPTE/CCE observations of fifteen current sheet disruption events. According to the model proposed here, the root cause of the current disruption is some process, as yet unknown, that leads to an increase in the k sub A parameter. Possible causes for the increase in k sub A are discussed.

In General, the Total Voltammetric Current from a Mixture of Redox-Active Substances will Not be the Sum of the Currents that Each Substance would Produce Independently at the Same Concentration as in the Mixture

At the potential range where both decamethylferrocene (dMeFc) and ferrocene (Fc) are oxidized with rates controlled by linear diffusion, electrogenerated Fc(+) radicals diffusing outwards from the electrode react quantitatively (K23 C=5.8 x 10(exp 8) with dMeFc diffusing towards the electrode and produce Fc and dMeFc. That reaction replaces dMeFc with Fc, whose diffusion coefficient is higher than that of dMeFc(+), and the total mass-transfer limited current from the mixture is increased by approximately 10%. Analogous observations are made when mass-transfer is controlled by convective-diffusion as in RDE voltammetry. Similar results have been obtained with another, and for all practical purposes randomly selected pair of redox-active substances, [Co(bipy)3](2+) and N - methylphenothiazine (MePTZ); reaction of MePTZ(+) with [Co(bipy)3](2+) replaces the latter with MePTZ, which diffuses faster and the current increases by approximately 20%. The experimental voltammograms have been simulated numerically and the role of (a) the rate constant of the homogeneous reaction; (b) the relative concentrations; and, (c) the diffusion coefficients of all species involved have been studied in detail. Importantly, it was also identified that within any given redox system the dependence of the mass-transfer limited current on the bulk concentrations of the redox-active species is expected to be non-linear. These findings are discussed in terms of their electroanalytical implications.
