The Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) Arctic Futures 2050 Conference. Final Report

The Arctic Futures 2050 Conference was designed as a novel convening of Arctic scientists, Indigenous people, and decision makers, including policy makers at all levels of government. The conference was held 4–6 September 2019 in Washington, D.C. and gathered nearly 400 participants to explore six questions: What do we know, and what do we need to know about the Arctic—and why does it matter? What challenges confront policy makers in the rapidly changing Arctic? What basic research is needed to inform responses to Arctic change? What applied research is needed to inform responses to change? What tools can facilitate informing policy making with science and Indigenous knowledge? What opportunities exist for partnerships between policy makers and scientists? A conference report (see: https://www.searcharcticscience.org/arctic-2050/conference-2019/products) detailed all conference discussions. The main conference conclusion was that holistic understanding and useful adaptation to rapid Arctic change requires bringing together scientists, Indigenous Knowledge holders, and policy makers in all phases of defining the problems, conducting research, and sharing knowledge.

IX Cell Wall Research Conference 2022 (IXCWRC): Cell wall research for new fundamental discoveries and applications in plant biology

This application is for securing funds to offset the registration fees and lodging costs for US-based early career investigators (ERCs) to participate to the IX Cell Wall Research Conference 2022 (IXCWRC 2022): Cell wall research for new fundamental discoveries and applications in plant biology. The conference will be held in East Lansing, Michigan on June 13-17, 2022. The conference will focus on the plant cell wall. Plant cells are encapsulated by the cell wall, a dynamic structure that protects them, enables them to interface with the external environment and supports the growth of the entire organism. There is a growing interest in understanding the complex processes necessary to build and deconstruct the plant cell wall. A better understanding of how the cell wall is synthesized during plant growth and in response to the environment, and how it is deconstructed for a broad variety of applications can inform and improve biotechnological processes for increasing biomass yield and improving industrial processes for the recovery of valuable, sustainable polymers. Acquiring such knowledge requires the exchange of new ideas and results as well as the development and application of new technologies. The IXCWRC 2022 aims to reach this goal by providing an opportunity for an open forum to discuss new ideas and theories and develop collaborations for scientists across the globe in a diverse and supportive environment. A distinction of the IXCWRC 2022 from all the preceding plant cell wall conferences will be its focus on the training and inclusion of the next generation of scientists, the ERCs. The overall goal of this application is to broaden the participation of ERCs with a focus on underrepresented communities. The specific goal of this application is to secure support for registration and lodging for US-based ERCs to attend the conference. Priority will be given to ERCs from underrepresented communities in science. We expect that support from DOE will allow the development of an exciting and innovative program to discuss the latest scientific advances in cell wall biology research, advance the next generation of plant cell wall researchers and foster the foundations of an inclusive community in science.

Yosemite Conference on Ionospheric Plasma in the Magnetosphere: Sources, Mechanisms and Consequences, meeting report

The sixth biennial Yosemite topical conference and the first as a Chapman Conference was held on February 3 to 6, 1986. Due to the recent changes in our perception of the dynamics of the ionospheric/magnetospheric system, it was deemed timely to bring researchers together to discuss and contrast the relative importance of solar versus terrestrial sources of magnetospheric plasma. Although the solar wind was once thought to dominate the supply of plasma in the Earth's magnetosphere, it is now thought that the Earth's ionosphere is a significant contributor. Polar wind and other large volume outflows of plasma have been seen at relatively high altitudes over the polar cap and are now being correlated with outflows found in the magnetotail. The auroral ion fountain and cleft ion fountain are examples of ionospheric sources of plasma in the magnetosphere, observed by the Dynamics Explorer 1 (DE 1) spacecraft. The conference was organized into six sessions: four consisting of prepared oral presentations, one poster session, and one session for open forum discussion. The first three oral sessions dealt separately with the three major topics of the conference, i.e., the sources, mechanisms, and consequences of ionospheric plasma in the magnetosphere. A special session of invited oral presentations was held to discuss extraterrestrial ionospheric/magnetospheric plasma processes. The poster session was extended over two evenings during which presenters discussed their papers on a one-on-one basis. The last session of the conferences was reserved for open discussions of those topics or ideas considered most interesting or controversial.

Perspectives in Scanning Probe Microscopy from the 2021 Joint International Scanning Probe Microscopy and Scanning Probe Microscopy on Soft and Polymeric Materials Conference

In March of 2020 we were well on our way to organizing and hosting one of the premier scanning probe microscopy (SPM) conferences in Breckenridge, Colorado, USA. For the first time, the meeting would synergistically combine International Scanning Probe Microscopy (ISPM) and Scanning Probe Microscopy on Soft and Polymeric Materials (SPMonSPM), to increase the breadth of audience expertise and experience. We coined the joint conference iSPM 3 – a moniker we hope will persist in future events. The plan for 2020 iSPM 3 screeched to a halt in mid-March, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Luckily, we were able to regroup and reimagine the conference for 2021 as a virtual experience. The conference took place June 28th to July 2nd with a mix of live and pre-recorded content. Spread throughout the week were 4 live panel discussions, 3 plenary talks, 23 invited talks, 75 contributed talks, 15 posters and 3 social events. The technical program represented much of the latest and most impactful research in the field. The panel discussions sought to step back from specific research findings and assess the state of SPM as it pertains to some of the most pressing opportunities and influential successes. The lively discussions painted a vibrant future for SPM in both breadth and detail, and we hope that similar discussion can be a mainstay of future SPM conferences. In this work, we attempt to distill some of that discussion to motivate researchers across the field of SPM in the coming years.

Preface to the Proceedings of the 23rd Topical Conference on High-Temperature Plasma Diagnostics

Measurements of phenomena advance our understanding of the physical universe. As our understanding grows, more precise measurements are required, as are measurements of new quantities. Diagnosis of a plasma requires developing new instruments, also called diagnostics, as well as new ways to analyze, interpret, synthesize, and correlate their measurements. Further, as computing power increases and multi-physics codes improve their accuracy, more precise measurements are needed to guide future code developments and to validate predictions of these simulation codes. The Topical Conference on High-Temperature Plasma Diagnostics is focused on presenting and documenting the most recent advances in these instrumentation areas for plasmas. The 23rd occurrence of this biennial conference took place on December 14–17, 2020, and was hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory. Originally scheduled for June 2020 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the conference was postponed and then held virtually due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Conference times were adjusted and presentations were scheduled to meet the needs of attendees in Europe, the USA, and Asia.
