Evidence of Completion of Milestone 3: Experimental Testbed

Construction and deployment of the experimental testbed encountered scheduling delays, and completion was subsequently further delayed by curtailment of LANL operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Between March and October, LANL was in a state of “Limited Operations” such that only certain “mission-critical” work was performed with approximately 25% on-site staffing. In spite of this, much of the lab space preparation was executed and the five initial model house” units were constructed and installed during this period. Still, the pace of construction was impacted by difficulty in coordinating personnel and minimizing contact between workers. Currently, LANL is in the mode of “Normal Operations with Maximum Telework,” which continues to limit the availability of on-site personnel. Nevertheless, Milestone 3 is now complete. This document describes the experiment as it is deployed and provides status for each task for this milestone.

Phased Construction Completion Report for Decontamination Laundry Demolition at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory

This Phased Construction Completion Report (PCCR) documents completion of demolition, waste disposition, and slab stabilization activities of Building 2523 (Decontamination Laundry) for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Decontamination Laundry is located directly north of the intersection of White Oak Avenue and the 2519 Access Road. This demolition scope included the removal of the above-grade structures and facility components associated with Building 2523. This scope included the removal of Building 2523 (and all remaining contents inside), Trailer 2523A (and all remaining contents inside), an above-grade wastewater tank, and a wooden access porch connecting Buildings 2523 and Trailer 2523A. On the north side of Building 2523, above-grade portions of selected remaining foundations/stairs were removed from former Building 2517 to make room to stage waste containers. Building 2621 is west of the Laundry Building and Buildings 2547 and 2649 are to the east, while Building 2525 is to the north. Building 2523 is located within Bethel Valley Exposure Unit (EU) 3. The total area of the EU is approximately 39 acres. The area within EU 3 is bounded by First Street on the west, Central Avenue on the north, Third Street on the east and south. The slab of Building 2523 has been stabilized with a cap of flowable fill concrete and asphalt to contain residual radiological contamination and to provide surface suitable for vehicle parking. No below-grade demolition actions were performed during this task.

The Poisson tensor completion parametric estimator

We introduce the Poisson tensor completion (PTC) estimator that exploits inter-sample relationships to compute a low-rank Poisson tensor decomposition of the frequency histogram for samples of a multivariate distribution. Our crucial observation is that the histogram bins are an instance of a space partitioning of counts and thus can be identified with a spatial non-homogeneous Poisson process. The Poisson tensor decomposition leads to a completion of the mean measure over all bins—including those containing few to no samples—and leads to our proposed estimator. A Poisson tensor decomposition models the underlying distribution of the count data and guarantees non-negative estimated values obviating the need for additional constraints to ensure non-negativity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our PTC estimator is a substantial improvement over standard histogram-based estimators for sub-Gaussian probability distributions because of the concentration of norm phenomenon.

Near-Complete Sampling of Forest Structure from High-Density Drone Lidar Demonstrated by Ray Tracing

Drone lidar has the potential to provide detailed measurements of vertical forest structure throughout large areas, but a systematic evaluation of unsampled forest structure in comparison to independent reference data has not been performed. Here, we used ray tracing on a high-resolution voxel grid to quantify sampling variation in a temperate mountain forest in the southwest Czech Republic. We decoupled the impact of pulse density and scan-angle range on the likelihood of generating a return using spatially and temporally coincident TLS data. We show three ways that a return can fail to be generated in the presence of vegetation: first, voxels could be searched without producing a return, even when vegetation is present; second, voxels could be shadowed (occluded) by other material in the beam path, preventing a pulse from searching a given voxel; and third, some voxels were unsearched because no pulse was fired in that direction. We found that all three types existed, and that the proportion of each of them varied with pulse density and scan-angle range throughout the canopy height profile. Across the entire data set, 98.1% of voxels known to contain vegetation from a combination of coincident drone lidar and TLS data were searched by high-density drone lidar, and 81.8% of voxels that were occupied by vegetation generated at least one return. By decoupling the impacts of pulse density and scan angle range, we found that sampling completeness was more sensitive to pulse density than to scan-angle range. There are important differences in the causes of sampling variation that change with pulse density, scan-angle range, and canopy height. Our findings demonstrate the value of ray tracing to quantifying sampling completeness in drone lidar.

Hadronic vacuum polarization for the muon g - 2 from lattice QCD: Complete short and intermediate windows

We present complete results for the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment a μ in the short- and intermediate-distance window regions, which account for roughly 10% and 35% of the total HVP contribution to a μ , respectively. In particular, we perform lattice-QCD calculations for the isospin-symmetric connected and disconnected contributions, as well as corrections due to strong-isospin breaking. For the short-distance window observables, we investigate the so-called log-enhancement effects as well as the significant oscillations associated with staggered quarks in this region. For the dominant, isospin-symmetric light-quark-connected contribution, we obtain a μ l l , SD ( conn ) = 48.139 ( 11 ) stat ( 91 ) syst [ 92 ] total × 10 - 10 and a μ l l , W ( conn ) = 206.90 ( 14 ) stat ( 61 ) syst [ 63 ] total × 10 - 10 . We use Bayesian model averaging to fully estimate the covariance matrix between the individual contributions. Our determinations of the complete window contributions are a μ SD = 69.05 ( 1 ) stat ( 21 ) syst [ 21 ] total × 10 - 10 and a μ W = 236.45 ( 17 ) stat ( 83 ) syst [ 85 ] total × 10 - 10 . This work is part of our ongoing effort to compute all contributions to HVP with an overall uncertainty at the few-permille level.

The stable carbon isotope fractionation of methanogenesis products at complete carbon consumption

The stable carbon isotope signature (δ 13 C) of methane (CH 4 ) is used to discriminate between biological, thermogenic, and abiotic sources. Methanogens, or methane producing archaea, inhabit a broad range of chemical conditions. Many of these environments are replete in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), causing isotopically depleted δ 13 C biogenic CH 4 . However, some extreme environments inhabited by methanogens, such as serpentinising systems, exhibit low carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) availability, replete H 2 , and isotopically enriched δ 13 C CH 4 that is outside the known biogenic range. We measured the δ 13 C of CO 2 , biomass, lipids, and CH 4 during hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis under hydrogen replete conditions with a limited carbon pool to investigate carbon isotope dynamics at complete DIC consumption. As theory predicts, we found that the final, accumulated methane δ 13 C values closely reflect the δ 13 C of the initial DIC supply, and that methane is more 13 C enriched than biomass and lipids. This provides the first experimental evidence that methanogens can achieve complete carbon consumption and thus can produce accumulated CH 4 products that isotopically reflect the initial CO 2 . These data show that the range of possible δ 13 C values from biogenic methane needs to be expanded for natural environments impacted by extreme carbon limitation.

Completely modular Thermionic Reactor Ion Propulsion System (TRIPS)

The nuclear reactor powered ion propulsion system described is an advanced completely modularized system which lends itself to development of prototype and/or flight type components without the need for complete system tests until late in the development program. This modularity is achieved in all of the subsystems and components of the electric propulsion system including (1) the thermionic fuel elements, (2) the heat rejection subsystem (heat pipes), (3) the power conditioning modules, and (4) the ion thrusters. Both flashlight and external fuel type in-core thermionic reactors are considered as the power source. The thermionic fuel elements would be useful over a range of reactor power levels. Electrical heated acceptance testing in their flight configuration is possible for the external fuel case. Nuclear heated testing by sampling methods could be used for acceptance testing of flashlight fuel elements. The use of heat pipes for cooling the collectors and as a means of heat transport to the radiator allows early prototype or flight configuration testing of a small module of the heat rejection subsystem as opposed to full scale liquid metal pumps and radiators in a large vacuum chamber. The power conditioner (p/c) is arranged in modules with passive cooling.

Drag of the complete configuration aerodynamic considerations, 2

A number of drag items are related to the performance of a complete aircraft configuration. First, the effect of fuselage camber, wing and nacelle incidence are discussed from a viewpoint of design decision making. Second, the effect of overall cruise drag on the design gross and empty weight of the airplane is discussed. Examples show that cruise drag can have a very important influence on total airplane weight. Third, the effects of usable cruise lift-to-drag ratio and wing loading are shown to be important. Finally several research needs relating to design of the complete configuration are reviewed.

User's guide to computer program CIVM-JET 4B to calculate the transient structural responses of partial and/or complete structural rings to engine-rotor-fragment impact

A user-oriented computer program CIVM-JET 4B is described to predict the large-deflection elastic-plastic structural responses of fragment impacted single-layer: (a) partial-ring fragment containment or deflector structure or (b) complete-ring fragment containment structure. These two types of structures may be either free or supported in various ways. Supports accommodated include: (1) point supports such as pinned-fixed, ideally-clamped, or supported by a structural branch simulating mounting-bracket structure and (2) elastic foundation support distributed over selected regions of the structure. The initial geometry of each partial or complete ring may be circular or arbitrarily curved; uniform or variable thicknesses of the structure are accommodated. The structural material is assumed to be initially isotropic; strain hardening and strain rate effects are taken into account.

Modeling the complete Otto cycle: Preliminary version

A description is given of the equations and the computer program being developed to model the complete Otto cycle. The program incorporates such important features as: (1) heat transfer, (2) finite combustion rates, (3) complete chemical kinetics in the burned gas, (4) exhaust gas recirculation, and (5) manifold vacuum or supercharging. Changes in thermodynamic, kinetic and transport data as well as model parameters can be made without reprogramming. Preliminary calculations indicate that: (1) chemistry and heat transfer significantly affect composition and performance, (2) there seems to be a strong interaction among model parameters, and (3) a number of cycles must be calculated in order to obtain steady-state conditions.

Insulation end life determination for completed form-wound generators

Tests were conducted to predict remaining electrical insulation life of a polyimide-epoxy insulated 60 kW form-wound homopolar inductor generator following completion of 23,130 hours of turbo-generator endurance tests. The generator stator was sectioned to provide five sections, designated statorettes, and to permit 33 coil dielectric measurements on each section. Thermal aging tests were conducted on each section at select elevated temperatures to establish an Arrhenius life-temperature plot for end-life prediction and product or application use. The statorette fabrication technique is considered novel and provides means to establish insulation life-temperature profiles on completed electromagnetic components of rotating machines.

Aeroelastic stability of complete rotors with application to a teetering rotor in forward flight

The derivation of a set of nonlinear coupled flap-lag-torsion equations of motion for moderately large deflections of an elastic, two bladed teetering helicopter rotor in forward flight is concisely outlined. The following degrees of freedom are included in the mathematical model: rigid body flapping, rigid body lead lag, elastic bending in flap and lead-lag blade root torsion and shaft torsion. Quasi-steady aerodynamic loads are considered and the effects of reversed flow are included. The aeroelastic stability of the complete rotor is investigated using a linearized system of equations of motion. The equilibrium position about which the equations are linearized is obtained by considering the trim state of the helicopter, in true or simulated forward flight conditions. The sensitivity of the aeroelastic stability boundaries to interblade structural and mechanical coupling is illustrated by comparing the complete rotor stability boundaries with those obtained from a single blade analysis for a number of hover and forward flight cases.

Method for minimizing the cost/Watt of complete photovoltaic systems and applications

The paper describes an optimization method and some applications in which the design criterion for every part of a photovoltaic system is the minimum power cost for the complete system. The various parts of a photovoltaic system are grouped so that all costs fall into four classes: fabrication steps of the active solar cells; steps associated with the collector array and its complete structure; power-handling elements such as switchgear, storage, etc.; and fixed costs that do not vary directly with any of the system parts, such as factory-level overhead. It is assumed that the total collector area is independent of any of the optimization processes. A general equation is found to be capable of optimizing all parts of a system, although the cell and array steps are basically different from the power-handling elements. It is shown that the optimization of any step in the system requires inclusion of the properties of the other parts of the system.

A complete X-ray sample of the high latitude sky from HEAO-1 A-2: log N lo S and luminosity functions

An experiment was performed in which a complete X-ray survey of the 8.2 steradians of the sky at galactic latitudes where the absolute value of b is 20 deg down to a limiting sensitivity of 3.1 x ten to the minus 11th power ergs/sq cm sec in the 2-10 keV band. Of the 85 detected sources 17 were identified with galactic objects, 61 were identified with extragalactic objects, and 7 remain unidentified. The log N - log S relation for the non-galactic objects is well fit by the Euclidean relationship. The X-ray spectra of these objects were used to construct log N - log S in physical units. The complete sample of identified sources was used to construct X-ray luminosity functions, using the absolute maximum likelihood method, for clusters galaxies and active galactic nuclei.

A complete X-ray sample of the high-latitude /absolute value of b greater than 20 deg/ sky from HEAO 1 A-2 - Log N-log S and luminosity functions

An all-sky survey of X-ray sources was performed, complete to a limiting sensitivity of 3.1 x 10 to the -11 ergs/sq cm/s in the 2-10 keV band. The complete sample has allowed construction of luminosity functions based on a flux-limited sample for clusters of galaxies and active galactic nuclei. Integration of the best-fit luminosity functions indicates that clusters of galaxies contribute about 4% of the 2-10 keV DXRB, and active galactic nuclei about 20%. It is predicted that many of the objects seen in the deep survey should be local, relatively low luminosity active galactic nuclei and clusters of galaxies.

Nonreflecting boundary conditions for the complete unsteady transonic small-disturbance equation

Nonreflecting far-field boundary conditions that are consistent with the complete transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equations are derived. They are implemented in a new code for solving the complete TSD equation and are tested for a harmonically oscillating NACA 64A010 airfoil in transonic flow and for a flat-plate airfoil with a pulse in the angle of attack. Using the new boundary conditions on a relatively small grid, solutions for the airfoil that are obtained that agree with large-grid calculations, resulting in a 44 percent savings in computer time. Frequency responses for the flat plate show that most of the disturbances incident on the computational boundaries are absorbed by the boundary conditions.
