Real-time minimal-bit-error probability decoding of convolutional codes

A recursive procedure is derived for decoding of rate R = 1/n binary convolutional codes which minimizes the probability of the individual decoding decisions for each information bit, subject to the constraint that the decoding delay be limited to Delta branches. This new decoding algorithm is similar to, but somewhat more complex than, the Viterbi decoding algorithm. A real-time, i.e., fixed decoding delay, version of the Viterbi algorithm is also developed and used for comparison to the new algorithm on simulated channels. It is shown that the new algorithm offers advantages over Viterbi decoding in soft-decision applications, such as in the inner coding system for concatenated coding.

Measurement of bit-error rate

Error rate of RF digital communication link is measured at low signal-to-noise ratios using this technique. In this method, identical pseudo-random sequences of pulses are generated at transmitter and receiver of link. However, comparison of two sequences at receiver involves integration that makes bit-tracking threshold depend on length of pseudo-random sequence, rather than on actual rate of transmission of individual bits.

Effect of flutter on theoretical bit error rates for digital recording systems.

Tape recorders employed to record and eventually reproduce digital data introduce errors into the data. It is desirable to understand the sources of these errors so that predictions may be made of the resultant error rate. While specific predictions are difficult to apply to whole classes of machines and their respective electronic systems, it is possible to make general predictions which give insight into the problems and processes involved. A heuristic viewpoint is developed for understanding the problems involved in machines and systems that now exist.

The bit-error rate performance of a satellite microwave matrix switch

The matrix switch is a critical element of communications satellites using multiple-beam antennas and on-board switching. Two proof-of-concept models of a microwave matrix switch have been developed under NASA-sponsored contracts. These switches have undergone extensive testing at NASA Lewis Research Center to determine their operating characteristics in a system environment. The results of these tests indicate the effect of the matrix switch on the overall system operation.

Performance of concatenated Reed-Solomon/Viterbi channel coding

The concatenated Reed-Solomon (RS)/Viterbi coding system is reviewed. The performance of the system is analyzed and results are derived with a new simple approach. A functional model for the input RS symbol error probability is presented. Based on this new functional model, we compute the performance of a concatenated system in terms of RS word error probability, output RS symbol error probability, bit error probability due to decoding failure, and bit error probability due to decoding error. Finally we analyze the effects of the noisy carrier reference and the slow fading on the system performance.

Asymmetric Memory Circuit Would Resist Soft Errors

Some nonlinear error-correcting codes more efficient in presence of asymmetry. Combination of circuit-design and coding concepts expected to make integrated-circuit random-access memories more resistant to "soft" errors (temporary bit errors, also called "single-event upsets" due to ionizing radiation). Integrated circuit of new type made deliberately more susceptible to one kind of bit error than to other, and associated error-correcting code adapted to exploit this asymmetry in error probabilities.

Masked fault detection for reliable low voltage cache operation

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for implementing masked fault detection for reliable low voltage cache operation are disclosed. A processor includes a cache that can operate at a relatively low voltage level to conserve power. However, at low voltage levels, the cache is more likely to suffer from bit errors. To mitigate the bit errors occurring in cache lines at low voltage levels, the cache employs a strategy to uncover masked faults during runtime accesses to data by actual software applications. For example, on the first read of a given cache line, the data of the given cache line is inverted and written back to the same data array entry. Also, the error correction bits are regenerated for the inverted data. On a second read of the given cache line, if the fault population of the given cache line changes, then the given cache line's error protection level is updated.

A compact presentation of DSN array telemetry performance

The telemetry performance of an arrayed receiver system, including radio losses, is often given by a family of curves giving bit error rate vs bit SNR, with tracking loop SNR at one receiver held constant along each curve. This study shows how to process this information into a more compact, useful format in which the minimal total signal power and optimal carrier suppression, for a given fixed bit error rate, are plotted vs data rate. Examples for baseband-only combining are given. When appropriate dimensionless variables are used for plotting, receiver arrays with different numbers of antennas and different threshold tracking loop bandwidths look much alike, and a universal curve for optimal carrier suppression emerges.

Characteristics of Single-Event Upsets in a Fabric Switch (ADS151)

Abstract-Two types of single event effects - bit errors and single event functional interrupts - were observed during heavy-ion testing of the AD8151 crosspoint switch. Bit errors occurred in bursts with the average number of bits in a burst being dependent on both the ion LET and on the data rate. A pulsed laser was used to identify the locations on the chip where the bit errors and single event functional interrupts occurred. Bit errors originated in the switches, drivers, and output buffers. Single event functional interrupts occurred when the laser was focused on the second rank latch containing the data specifying the state of each switch in the 33x17 matrix.

Short constraint length rate 1/2 'quick-look' codes

Quick-look nonsystematic convolutional codes have the property that the information sequence may be recovered from the encoded sequence in straightforward fashion and with a minimum of error amplification. In this concise paper we investigate their relevant characteristics for constraint lengths less than eight and rate 1/2 and obtain a number of interesting and practically useful results. In particular, for the best of these codes, we derive their free distance and error amplification, their decoded bit error probability when used over the binary symmetric channel in conjunction with Viterbi decoding, and show how they can be employed to measure the channel bit error rate.

Improving the performance of soft decision Viterbi decoding in a non-Gaussian environment through non-linear quantization

The performance of Viterbi decoding in a non-Gaussian environment is investigated using a nonlinear quantization strategy. The channel model consists of a convolutionally encoded BPSK signal transmitted to a satellite where it is corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise and pulsed radio frequency interference (RFI). The resultant signal is then passed through a satellite nonlinearity and transmitted to a ground station where it is coherently detected. Interleaving is assumed in order to make the channel memoryless. The presence of RFI makes the channel statistics non-Gaussian, leading to a nonlinear log-likelihood function. A near optimum quantization scheme is found by maximizing a channel parameter, or by matching the quantizer to the log-likelihood function in a mean square error sense. Bit error rate performance improvement is achieved by using such nonlinear quantization.
