Smaller Is Better: The Case for Lower-Order Iodoplumbate Species Dominating MAPbI 3 /Dimethylformamide Solutions

Here, using complementary experimental measurements and computational predictions of spectroscopic measurements (EXAFS, XANES, and UV–vis), we have determined the identity of the most stable iodoplumbate species in dilute lead halide perovskite precursor solutions. We have determined which species are most likely to be thermodynamically stable compared to others that are unstable or metastable. Condensed phase ab initio models were constructed, and the resulting ensembles were used to directly compare the computed signals to the experimental results of the EXAFS, XANES, and UV–vis spectra of PbI 2 :MAI in DMF. The results of this study suggest that only Pb 2+ , PbI + , and PbI 2 are dominant in the dilute lead perovskite precursor solutions as thermodynamically stable entities. Our interpretation of the relative stability of iodoplumbate species in solution, based on an analysis of EXAFS and XANES spectra, provides critically important new insight into the species most likely to be responsible for crystal nucleation and growth in these materials. This insight will have a significant consequence on the broad scientific community and will necessitate the reinterpretation of peaks in the UV–vis spectra of lead halide perovskite precursor solutions.

Local Spin Density Approximation Strongly Improved by a Better-Informed Local Scaling of Its Self-Interaction Correction

The Perdew−Zunger self-interaction correction (PZSIC) makes density functional approximations (DFAs) exact for all one-electron densities. However, it overcorrects in manyelectron regions, introducing errors for the uniform-density limit, where uncorrected DFAs are exact. The locally scaled PZSIC (LSIC), based on the iso-orbital indicator zσ [which distinguishes single-orbital and slowly varying density regions and is used with the local spin density approximation (LSDA)], restores the uniform-density limit and significantly improves results for many properties, including chemical reaction barrier heights, atomization energies, and ionization potentials. Yet, LSIC performs poorly for weakly bonded systems, leaving many unbound, due to limitations of its iso-orbital indicator. To correct this, in this work we propose a new local scaling, LSIC-α, based on the iso-orbital indicator ασ (which additionally identifies regions of overlapping density tails). A two-parameter scaling function of ασ is fitted to a subset of the nonbonded appropriate norms for the SCAN and r2SCAN meta- GGAs, and tested on many properties of main-group atoms, molecules, and molecular complexes. LSIC-α greatly improves the interaction energies of weakly bonded systems in the S22 data set while retaining LSIC’s accuracy for other properties. This work shows that the errors of LSDA (and presumably of higher-level DFAs) can be largely but not entirely repaired by a proper “do no harm” self-interaction correction.

Toward a Better Understanding of Ni Coarsening in Solid Oxide Cells: NiH on Ni (111) Examined Using a Combined Theoretical Approach

The coarsening of the Ni particles in the hydrogen electrode of solid oxide cells (SOCs) is an important degradation mechanism. Here, in this paper, density-functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo methods are used to explore our recent hypothesis that the surface diffusion of NiH may cause faster Ni coarsening in electrolysis cell mode under an overpotential. Using both methods, the diffusion constant or diffusivity of NiH on Ni (111) is determined as the product of the surface coverage and single-molecule diffusivity for the first time considering all possible diffusion paths. It is then determined versus overpotential at the triple-phase boundary of the hydrogen electrode assuming a typical operating temperature of the SOC. Under a significant overpotential, the diffusivity of NiH is found to be sufficiently large to support the above hypothesis that NiH may promote Ni coarsening. However, based on the adsorption configurations identified, the dissociation and reformation of NiH on Ni (111) could occur. Thus, more work is needed to develop a model of Ni coarsening considering both molecular and dissociated forms of NiH.

Sustainable strategies to achieve industrial ethanol titers from different bioenergy feedstocks: scale-up approach for better ethanol yield

Hydrothermal pretreatment is a promising approach to lignocellulosic biomass processing for enzymatic hydrolysis and high-yield bioethanol fermentation, as it reduces downstream inhibitor content and the amount of toxic byproducts generated. In this paper, the ethanol yield and productivity of an engineered xylose-fermenting strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were tested on lignocellulosic hydrolysates produced with varying citrate buffer concentration, solid loading, supplemental nitrogen source, and feedstock of origin, and a semi-integrated bioprocess which integrates enzymatic hydrolysis and bioethanol fermentation was developed. The greatest ethanol yields (g p /g s ) of 0.490 ± 0.008, 0.460 ± 0.001, 0.420 ± 0.002 and 0.410 ± 0.002 were obtained from bioenergy sorghum (BES), Miscanthus × giganteus (MG), energy cane (EC), and oilcane (OC), respectively. In addition, an equivalent of 291 L, 253.54 L, 257.8 L, and 260.3 L of bioethanol were produced per ton of BES, MG, EC, and OC, respectively, by using urea as a nitrogen source in a bioreactor.

Two datasets are better than one: method of double moments for 3D reconstruction in cryo-EM

Cryo-electron microscopy is a powerful imaging technique for reconstructing three-dimensional molecular structures from noisy tomographic projection images of randomly oriented particles. We introduce a new data fusion framework, termed the method of double moments, which reconstructs molecular structures from two instances of the second-order moment of projection images obtained under distinct orientation distributions: one uniform, the other non-uniform and unknown. We prove that these moments generically uniquely determine the underlying structure, up to a global rotation and reflection, and we develop a convex-relaxation-based algorithm that achieves accurate recovery using only second-order statistics. Our results demonstrate the advantage of collecting and modeling multiple datasets under different experimental conditions, illustrating that leveraging dataset diversity can substantially enhance reconstruction quality in computational imaging tasks.

Is more better? Polyploidy in crops with diverse end uses and the potential for future applications

Increasing the number of chromosome sets can increase cell size and improve yields in some crops. Breeding polyploid crops introduces unique challenges compared to diploid species, which has deterred many from exploring the potential benefits. Despite this, recent technological advancements have alleviated some of the challenges related to complex genomes and enabled the improvement of many polyploid crops. Given these advancements, there is a need to review the use of higher ploidy crops and explore potential opportunities for increased chromosome number. Many of the leading bioenergy crops are polyploids and there may be additional opportunities to further diversify feedstocks for emerging bioenergy markets. Such diversification would help to meet the anticipated increase in renewable and sustainable energy demands. Here, in this perspective review, we review polyploid crops and the extent to which ploidy level impacts improvement and production. The advantages and disadvantages of each crop are discussed in the context of their ploidy level and end-use. Particular emphasis is given to the current role and potential of polyploidy in creating the next generation of bioenergy feedstocks. Polyploids present challenges to crop improvement due to their complex genomes, but many of these difficulties can and have been overcome with technological advancements. Approaches that facilitate the use of higher ploidy crops open a path to capturing the many benefits of polyploidy, such as increased fruit and seed size, vigour, diversity, biomass and yield quality. However, these benefits are not observed across all species. This further emphasizes the need to study higher ploidy in traditionally diploid crops.

Building a better neutrino trap

First detected by Los Alamos researchers Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan in a nuclear reactor in 1956, tiny particles dubbed neutrinos are so abundant they constantly pass through human bodies by the trillions. But despite decades of study, the neutrino's bizarre nature is still little understood. Lab scientists are trying to rectify that.

Toward a better understanding of Ni coarsening in solid oxide cells: NiH on Ni (111) examined at the level of density-functional theory (and KMC)

Ni coarsening in the fuel electrode of solid oxide cells (SOCs) is known to be significantly faster under a humid atmosphere. In this talk, density-functional theory and kinetic Monte Carlo methods are used to explore the hypothesis that the surface diffusion of NiH on Ni may promote Ni coarsening in the SOC operated in electrolysis cell mode. Defining the surface diffusivity as the product of the fractional surface coverage and single-molecule surface diffusivity, the surface diffusivity of NiH on Ni (111) is found to be large enough under a significant overpotential to support the above hypothesis. However, as NiH could dissociate on Ni (111), more work is needed to show that NiH may promote Ni coarsening.

Towards Better Modeling the Probability of Hydrogen Ignition

It is paramount to accurately access the risk of facilities and machinery that use hydrogen. Towards this effort, this report surveys and compares existing models for the ignition of unintended hydrogen releases, typically leaks. These models are primarily formed on expert experience and perhaps a few points of data. As such, this report provides suggestions for improvement in ignition probability modeling, both in terms of experimentation and incident collection as well as modeling.
