Studies in the fields of space flight and guidance theory progress report no. 7, 23 jul. 1964 - 1 apr. 1965

The progress reports of NASA-sponsored studies in the areas of space flight and guidance theory are presented. The studies are carried on by several universities and industrial companies. This progress report covers the period from July 23, 1964 to April 1, 1965. The contracts are technically supervised by personnel of the Astrodynamics and Guidance Theory Division, Aero-Astrodynamics Laboratory, Marshall Space Flight Center.

Environment of Mars, 1988

A compilation of scientific knowledge about the planet Mars is provided. Information is divided into three categories: atmospheric data, surface data, and astrodynamic data. The discussion of atmospheric data includes the presentation of nine different models of the Mars atmosphere. Also discussed are Martian atmospheric constituents, winds, clouds, and solar irradiance. The great dust storms of Mars are presented. The section on Mars surface data provides an in-depth examination of the physical and chemical properties observed at the two Viking landing sites. Bulk densities, dielectric constants, and thermal inertias across the planet are then described and related back to those specific features found at the Viking landing sites. The astrodynamic materials provide the astronomical constants, time scales, and reference coordinate frames necessary to perform flightpath analysis, navigation design, and science observation design.

A Survey of Symplectic and Collocation Integration Methods for Orbit Propagation

Demands on numerical integration algorithms for astrodynamics applications continue to increase. Common methods, like explicit Runge-Kutta, meet the orbit propagation needs of most scenarios, but more specialized scenarios require new techniques to meet both computational efficiency and accuracy needs. This paper provides an extensive survey on the application of symplectic and collocation methods to astrodynamics. Both of these methods benefit from relatively recent theoretical developments, which improve their applicability to artificial satellite orbit propagation. This paper also details their implementation, with several tests demonstrating their advantages and disadvantages.

Trajectory Design Tools for Libration and Cis-Lunar Environments

Innovative trajectory design tools are required to support challenging multi-body regimes with complex dynamics, uncertain perturbations, and the integration of propulsion influences. Two distinctive tools, Adaptive Trajectory Design and the General Mission Analysis Tool have been developed and certified to provide the astrodynamics community with the ability to design multi-body trajectories. In this paper we discuss the multi-body design process and the capabilities of both tools. Demonstrable applications to confirmed missions, the Lunar IceCube Cubesat lunar mission and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) Sun-Earth L2 mission, are presented.

Space and planetary environment criteria guidelines for use in space vehicle development, 1971 revision

A consolidation of natural environment data is presented for use as design criteria guidelines in space and planetary exploration vehicle development programs. In addition to information in the disciplinary areas of aeronomy, radiation, geomagnetism, astrodynamic constants, and meteoroids for the earth's environment above 90 kilometers, interplanetary space, and the planetary environments, the upper atmosphere model currently recommended for use at MSFC is discussed in detail.

Mariner 9 celestial mechanics experiment - A status report.

There are two basic efforts in the Mariner 9 celestial mechanics experiment: the determination of the gravity field of Mars and the performance of a very precise test of the theory of general relativity. In addition, there are a number of astrodynamic constants that are being determined. All the analyses are based on the Mariner 9 radio tracking data.

Exploring Jupiter and its satellites with an orbiter

Review of the initial studies that define a challenging Mariner Jupiter Orbiter mission. Elegant and precise astrodynamics are shown to make possible a bravura examination of the entire Jovian system with two Mariner-class spacecraft to be launched in 1981. This mission is expected to advance considerably our understanding of the origin and evolution of the solar system.

Natural environment design requirements for the Spacelab

The natural environment design requirements for the Spacelab, carried to orbital altitudes as cargo in the space shuttle bay, were presented. This includes consideration of the following: neutral atmosphere, charged particles, radiation (galactic cosmic, trapped, and solar particle events), meteoroids, and astrodynamic constants.
