Regression Based Approach for Robust Finite Element Analysis on Arbitrary Grids. LDRD Final Report

This report summarizes the work performed under a one-year LDRD project aiming to enable accurate and robust numerical simulation of partial differential equations for meshes that are of poor quality. Traditional finite element methods use the mesh to both discretize the geometric domain and to define the finite element shape functions. The latter creates a dependence between the quality of the mesh and the properties of the finite element basis that may adversely affect the accuracy of the discretized problem. In this project, we propose a new approach for defining finite element shape functions that breaks this dependence and separates mesh quality from the discretization quality. At the core of the approach is a meshless definition of the shape functions, which limits the purpose of the mesh to representing the geometric domain and integrating the basis functions without having any role in their approximation quality. The resulting non-conforming space can be utilized within a standard discontinuous Galerkin framework providing a rigorous foundation for solving partial differential equations on low-quality meshes. We present a collection of numerical experiments demonstrating our approach in a wide range of settings: strongly coercive elliptic problems, linear elasticity in the compressible regime, and the stationary Stokes problem. We demonstrate convergence for all problems and stability for element pairs for problems which usually require inf-sup compatibility for conforming methods, also referring to a minor modification possible through the symmetric interior penalty Galerkin framework for stabilizing element pairs that would otherwise be traditionally unstable. Mesh robustness is particularly critical for elasticity, and we provide an example that our approach provides a greater than 5x improvement in accuracy and allows for taking an 8x larger stable timestep for a highly deformed mesh, compared to the continuous Galerkin finite element method. The report concludes with a brief summary of ongoing projects and collaborations that utilize or extend the products of this work.

Asynchronous distributed-memory task-parallel algorithm for compressible flows on unstructured 3D Eulerian grids

Here, we discuss the implementation of a finite element method, used to numerically solve the Euler equations of compressible flows, using an asynchronous runtime system (RTS). The algorithm is implemented for distributed-memory machines, using stationary unstructured 3D meshes, combining data-, and task-parallelism on top of the Charm++ RTS. Charm++’s execution model is asynchronous by default, allowing arbitrary overlap of computation and communication. Task-parallelism allows scheduling parts of an algorithm independently of, or dependent on, each other. Built-in automatic load balancing enables continuous redistribution of computational load by migration of work units based on real-time CPU load measurement. The RTS also features automatic checkpointing, fault tolerance, resilience against hardware failure, and supports power-, and energy-aware computation. We demonstrate scalability up to 25 x 10 9 cells at $\mathscr{O}$10 4 compute cores and the benefits of automatic load balancing for irregular workloads. Micro-continuum approach for mineral precipitation

Abstract Rates and extents of mineral precipitation in porous media are difficult to predict, in part because laboratory experiments are problematic. It is similarly challenging to implement numerical methods that model this process due to the need to dynamically evolve the interface of solid material. We developed a multiphase solver that implements a micro-continuum simulation approach based on the Darcy–Brinkman–Stokes equation to study mineral precipitation. We used the volume-of-fluid technique in sharp interface implementation to capture the propagation of the solid mineral surface. Additionally, we utilize an adaptive mesh refinement method to improve the resolution of near interface simulation domain dynamically. The developed solver was validated against both analytical solution and Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian approach to ensure its accuracy on simulating the propagation of the solid interface. The precipitation of barite (BaSO 4 ) was chosen as a model system to test the solver using variety of simulation parameters: different geometrical constraints, flow conditions, reaction rate and ion diffusion. The growth of a single barite crystal was simulated to demonstrate the solver’s capability to capture the crystal face specific directional growth.

Spatially Accelerated Winding Numbers for Curved Geometry

The generalized winding number (GWN) is a scalar field that supports robust containment queries on curved geometry, including non-watertight, overlapping, and nested boundary representations. While queries can be easily parallelized over samples, direct evaluation on parametric curves and surfaces remains costly for large and complex models. Fast, state-of-the-art GWN approaches leverage a spatial index to approximate the GWN, typically coupled with a Taylor expansion which approximates the GWN contribution for far clusters of geometric primitives. However, such methods operate only on discrete inputs such as triangle meshes and point clouds, and would introduce containment errors near boundaries if applied to curved input. We extend support for fast GWN evaluation over arbitrary collections of NURBS curves in 2D and trimmed NURBS patches in 3D via a Bounding Volume Hierarchy that stores efficiently precomputed moment data in the hierarchy nodes. When querying the hierarchy, approximations for far clusters are used alongside direct evaluation for nearby NURBS primitives, achieving sub-linear complexity while preserving the geometric features in the vicinity of the query point. Central to our performance improvements is an adaptive subdivision strategy for NURBS primitives during a preprocessing phase, creating better spatial partitions while retaining the same accuracy for containment decisions as a direct evaluation. We demonstrate the performance and accuracy of our approach across a large collection of 2D and 3D datasets.

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process ows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.
