Analytical techniques for identification and study of organic matter in returned lunar samples

The results of geochemical research are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the contribution of mass spectrometric data to the solution of specific structural problems. Information on the mass spectrometric behavior of compounds of geochemical interest is reviewed and currently available techniques of particular importance to geochemistry, such as gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer coupling, modern sample introduction methods, and computer application in high resolution mass spectrometry, receive particular attention.

Instrumental and analytic techniques for separating protons from electrons in the cosmic ray flux

Techniques are being investigated to aid in distinguishing between electrons and the large background of interacting protons which simulate electron-induced electromagnetic cascades. For cosmic ray primaries, incident on the HECRE ionization spectrometer, statistical criteria are employed to test the cascade curves with the incident energy and starting point as free parameters. The physical significance of the distribution of apparent cascade starting points is being studied using Monte Carlo 100-GeV protons. The proposed use of a CsI detector module (totally-active and high Z) to further discriminate against protons is described.

Spectroscopic analysis of solar and cosmic X-ray spectra. I - The nature of cosmic X-ray spectra and proposed analytical techniques

X-ray spectroscopic techniques developed in the study of the temperature and density structure of the solar corona are reviewed as introduction to a discussion of the modifications in these techniques which will be required for the study of cosmic X-ray sources. The structure of the interstellar medium - the presence of interstellar grains, the presence of molecules, the ionization structure - are considered in relation to the X-ray opacity of the interstellar medium. The expected spectral structure of individual cosmic X-ray sources is reviewed with emphasis on galactic supernova remnants and galactic binary X-ray sources.

Analytical techniques for the study of some parameters of multispectral scanner systems for remote sensing

The author has identified the following significant results. The concept of average mutual information in the received spectral random process about the spectral scene was developed. Techniques amenable to implementation on a digital computer were also developed to make the required average mutual information calculations. These techniques required identification of models for the spectral response process of scenes. Stochastic modeling techniques were adapted for use. These techniques were demonstrated on empirical data from wheat and vegetation scenes.

Comparison of several NASTRAN analytical techniques for large structures

In order to plan for the finite element structural analysis of future aircraft, five static analysis techniques using the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation version of NASTRAN were evaluated. The structure was analyzed as: (1) a single model with a symmetric loading condition; (2) a single model with symmetric/nonsymmetric loading conditions; (3) three substructures in three phases using tape storage with a symmetric loading condition; (4) three superelements using data base storage with a symmetric loading condition; and (5) three superelements using data base storage with cyclic symmetry for symmetric/nonsymmetric loading conditions. The superelement techniques proved superior to the single model approaches by reducing computer time for redesign work by as much as 70 percent.

Development of an analytical technique for the optimization of jet engine and duct acoustic liners

A new method was developed for the calculation of optimum constant admittance solutions for the minimization of the sound radiated from an arbitrary axisymmetric body. This method utilizes both the integral equation technique used in the calculation of the optimum non-constant admittance liners and the independent solution generated as a by product of these calculations. The results generated by both these methods are presented for three duct geometries: (1) a straight duct; (2) the QCSEE inlet; and (3) the QCSEE inlet less its centerbody.

multiplex gas chromatography: A novel analytical technique for future planetary studies

Determination of molecular species comprised of the biogenic elements in the atmospheres of planets and moons of the solar system is one the foremost requirements of the exobiologist studying chemical evolution and the origin of life. Multiplex chromatography is a technique where many samples are pseudo-randomly introduced to the chromatograph without regard to elution of preceding components. The resulting data are then reduced using mathematical techniques such as cross correlation or Fourier Transforms. To demonstrate the utility of this technique for future solar system exploration, chemical modulators were developed. Several advantages were realized from this technique in combination with these modulators: improvement in detection limits of several orders of magnitude, improvement in the analysis of complex mixtures by selectively modulating some of the components present in the sample, increase in the number of analyses that can be conducted in a given period of time, and reduction in the amount of expendables needed to run an analysis. In order to apply this technique in a real application, methane in ambient air was monitored continuously over a period of one week. By using ambient air as its own carrier all expendables beyond power were eliminated.
