As above, not so below: Ion fractionation in planetary analog ices

The geophysical evolution and astrobiological potential of ocean worlds are indelibly linked to the chemical compositions of their oceans and ice shells. In the absence of direct measurements, empirical estimates of subsurface ocean compositions have relied on the assumption that the ionic compositions of ice shell surfaces are representative of their underlying ocean compositions. Here, we present experimental results demonstrating that ion fractionation—the differential entrainment of ion species in forming ices—is likely a prevalent process on ocean worlds, suggesting that planetary ice shell compositions do not directly reflect their underlying ocean compositions. We measure in-ice depletions and amplifications of relative ion concentrations ranging between −40 and +77%, compared to the parent fluid composition. Although this may complicate the interpretation of spacecraft data, ion fractionation provides a mechanism for generating compositionally diverse ices that could help explain the geological complexity of planetary ice shells.

Wiener Filter Deconvolution for Analog Signals

This project explores the use of Wiener deconvolution to recover an original signal that has been distorted by a known transfer function and by noise. A simulated Gaussian pulse was used as the test signal, and a transfer function was applied in the frequency domain to model the system distortion. Controlled noise was then introduced to approximate real-world signal degradation. A Wiener filter was implemented to reverse the effects of the transfer function while minimizing the influence of noise. The recovered signal was compared with the original pulse to evaluate the effectiveness of the filter. The results demonstrate that Wiener deconvolution offers a stable and effective approach to signal recovery, balancing complete transfer function inversion and noise suppression.

Cost of emulating a small quantum annealing problem in the circuit model

Demonstrations of quantum advantage for certain sampling problems have generated considerable excitement for quantum computing and have further spurred the development of circuit-model quantum computers, which represent quantum programs as a sequence of quantum gates acting on a finite number of qubits. Amongst this excitement, analog quantum computation has become less prominent, with the expectation that circuit-model quantum computers will eventually be sufficient for emulating analog quantum computation and thus rendering analog quantum computation obsolete. In this work we explore the basic requirements for emulating a specific analog quantum computation in the circuit model: the preparation of a biased superposition of degenerate ground states of an Ising Hamiltonian using an adiabatic evolution. We show that the overhead of emulation is substantial even for this simple problem. This supports using analog quantum computation for solving time-dependent Hamiltonian dynamics in the short term and midterm, assuming analog errors can be made low enough and coherence times long enough to solve problems of practical interest.

Effect of Gamma Radiation on TaOₓ ECRAM

Electrochemical random access memory (ECRAM) is an emerging three-terminal nonvolatile memory (NVM) with highly controllable channel conductance which is promising for use as an analog memory (or synapse) in analog in-memory computing (IMC) systems. Energy-efficient analog IMC computing is particularly desirable for power-constrained, high-radiation environments such as satellites. However, little is known about the suitability of ECRAM for use in a total ionizing dose (TID) environment. Here, this work investigates the effect of Co-60 gamma radiation on the channel conductance and noise—two properties critical for analog IMC systems—of a TaO x -based ECRAM up to 17.3 Mrad(SiO 2 ) for both low- and high-channel-conductance state devices. A transient increase in conductance is observed in response to radiation which consists of two elements: an immediate increase in conductivity due to photocurrent and a secondary increase in conductivity, which has a slower rise and saturation and can persist for hours after exposure. This secondary, persistent photoconductivity is attributed to charging caused by hole trapping. These transient effects would not likely occur in a space environment due to the low dose rate compared with this experiment. No permanent change is found in the low conductance state (LCS) following exposure and the minor shift in the high conductance change would be less significant than the regular retention decay in this state. A permanent increase in the random telegraph noise is observed, possibly due to increased traps created in the channel. This work demonstrates that TaO x -based ECRAM is suitable for use in spaceborne analog IMC systems that are subject to significant TID.

Heracles: Predictive Tools for Opioid Crisis Intervention - m/q Initiative Project Report

The opioid crisis in the United States is being fueled primarily by fentanyl and its molecular analogs, which can be anywhere from 50 to 1,000 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl itself is straightforward to synthesize; furthermore, the structure is such that fentanyl’s flexible, rotatable side chains are easy to modify to create new analogs. Reference-free computational techniques to predict and identify new fentanyls have the potential to provide a desperately needed preemptive advantage to regulatory stakeholders and toxicologists. The computational pipeline Heracles was developed with this preemptive advantage in mind. Heracles has two primary components: 1) the creation of an in silico library of putative fentanyl analogs, and 2) a downselection pipeline to prioritize generated fentanyl analogs predicted to be potent and easy to synthesize. Experimental observables were also predicted for prioritized analogs, with validation of the observables begun. Heracles has demonstrated potential to aid in the advancement of reference-free paradigms while providing new tools to first responders and other stakeholders attempting to mitigate the opioid crisis.
