Electro-activated indigos intensify ampere-level CO 2 reduction to CO on silver catalysts

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to carbon monoxide (CO) is challenged by a selectivity decline at high current densities. Here we report a class of indigo-based molecular promoters with redox-active CO 2 binding sites to enhance the high-rate conversion of CO 2 to CO on silver (Ag) catalysts. Theoretical calculations and in situ spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that the synergistic effect at the interface of indigo-derived compounds and Ag nanoparticles could activate CO 2 molecules and accelerate the formation of key intermediates (*CO 2 – and *COOH) in the CO pathway. Indigo derivatives with electron-withdrawing groups further reduce the overpotential for CO production upon optimizing the interfacial CO 2 binding affinity. By integrating the molecular design of redox-active centres with the defect engineering of Ag structures, we achieve a Faradaic efficiency for CO exceeding 90% across a current density range of 0.10 − 1.20 A cm –2 . The Ag mass activity toward CO increases to 174 A mg –1 Ag . This work showcases that employing redox-active CO 2 sorbents as surface modification agents is a highly effective strategy to intensify the reactivity of electrochemical CO 2 reduction.

Self-replenishing Ni-rich stainless-steel electrode toward oxygen evolution reaction at ampere-level

In the past few decades, tremendous attention has been devoted to enhancing the activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for hydrogen production, while the cost and long-term stability of catalysts, which can play an even more important role in industrialization, have been much less emphasized. Herein, we engineered an OER electrode from abundant stainless steel (SS) via facile approaches, and the obtained electrode consists of a Ni-rich oxide surface layer with a Fe-rich metal substrate. An outstanding activity was observed with an overpotential of 316 mV at 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Additionally, an electrode self-replenishing concept is proposed in which a Ni-rich catalyst layer can be regenerated from a metallic substrate due to the difference in diffusion and dissolution rates of metal oxides/hydroxides, and this regeneration is validated by various characterizations. A recorded degradation rate of 0.012 was observed at 1000 mA cm −2 for 1000 h. The facile engineering of OER electrodes from SS combined with the self-replenishing catalyst can potentially address the cost, activity, and long-term stability barriers.

Installation of a solid state neutral particle analyzer array on mega ampere spherical tokamak upgrade

A compact solid state neutral particle analyzer (SSNPA) diagnostic, previously installed at NSTX-U, has been moved to MAST-U and successfully operated in the first physics campaign (MU01). The SSNPA operates by detecting the flux of fast neutral particles produced by charge exchange (CX) reactions to diagnose the fast ion distribution. The diagnostic consists of three 16-channel sensors, which provide a radial view of the plasma and have a sightline intersection with the South–South neutral beam line. From this radial geometry, active CX signals from mostly trapped particles are observed. Each channel has a spatial resolution of 3–4 cm, a temporal resolution of 200 kHz, and an average pitch angle resolution of a few degrees. The three-sensor configuration allows for coarse energy resolution of the CX signals; each sensor sees similar sightlines but different filter thicknesses alter the energy cutoffs by known amounts. Experimental data show that all channels are collecting data as intended. The signal to noise ratio is typically around 15. Preliminary data analysis shows a correlation between the SSNPA signal and magnetohydrodynamic activity in the plasma as expected.

Towards a quantum realization of the ampere using single-electron resolution Skipper-CCDs

This paper presents a proof-of-concept demonstration of the Skipper-charge coupled device (CCD), a sensor with single-electron counting capability, as a promising technology for implementing an electron-pump-based current source. Relying on its single-electron resolution and built-in charge sensing, it allows self-calibration of the charge packets. This article presents an initial discussion of the uncertainty in the charge measurement and achievable currents levels with this technology. Here, we report experimental results that illustrate the key functionalities in manipulating both small and large electron charge packets, including a comparison of the charge generated, self-measured, and drained by the sensor against measurements from an electrometer. These results were obtained using a standard sensor and readout electronics without specific optimizations for this application. The objective is to explore the potential of Skipper-CCD for realizing an electron-based current source.

ETG turbulent transport in the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST) pedestal

The results of a gyrokinetic analysis of turbulent transport driven by the electron temperature gradient (ETG) in the MAST pedestal are presented. Local nonlinear simulations from the gyrokinetic code, GENE, show that heat flux produced by ETG turbulence is 10%–30% of the total applied heating power in the upper pedestal and pedestal top during both the pre-edge-localized mode (ELM) (80%–99% inter-ELM period) and post-ELM (0%–20%) periods. Increasing strongly with the ETG, the ETG transport appears to be stiff. Considering radiation losses, ion thermal transport, and the strong sensitivity of the transport to the ETG, we propose that ETG transport is a plausible mechanism mediating the inter-ELM temperature profile on MAST. Cognizant of the possibility that sharp variations in the pedestal profiles may violate the local approximation, we conducted global nonlinear simulations; the results are in good agreement with local simulations except near the pedestal top, where extended radial structures and high transport levels (far beyond experimental) develop in the local simulations. We quantify and parameterize the discrepancy between local and global simulations by calculating the ratio of the radial correlation length to a length scale representative of the profile curvature. When this ratio is sufficiently small, local and global simulations agree as expected.

Model Quality and Measurement Density Impact on Volt/Volt Ampere Reactive Optimization Performance

The operation of the utility grid is being reshaped by the continuous addition of distributed energy resources and advanced metering infrastructure, which challenge existing grid control strategies. Some utilities deploy advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to assist with the consolidation of various applications and to augment situational awareness in response to the new power delivery dynamics. An ADMS is an integrated software platform that provides utilities with a way to enhance their reliability, control, and optimization with advanced applications, such as volt/VAR optimization (VVO). A VVO application could serve as a vehicle to deliver cost savings by providing the utility with a method to reduce rates by controlling the voltage and decreasing the energy usage in their service territory. Some utilities are reluctant to integrate an ADMS, because it is a significant investment that requires approval from the public regulatory commission and/or their customers. This paper evaluates the impact on VVO performance when using a lower-quality network model supplemented with additional measurements, which could provide an implementation for cost savings. The results show that a better model quality would provide the highest energy savings; however, some level of telemetry is necessary in all scenarios to prevent voltage exceedances.
