Mo-100 Disk Structural Integrity Tests I

The NorthStar pressed and sintered 29 mm diameter, 0.5 mm thick Mo-100 disks will be subjected to large temperature gradients when in beam during production. The beam preferentially heats the disk center, while the aggressive cooling by the helium keeps areas outside the beam spot relatively cool. The result is a temperature gradient of up to 900°C over the radial distance of 14.5 mm. To test the disk integrity with this high temperature gradient, a special holder for a single disk was made such that proper cooling can be applied as in the design target and the disk heating can be replicated with induction heating. NorthStar press and sintered disks were used for these tests.

NorthStar Helium Cooling System. Final Report on LANL Contribution

From the beginning of NNSA support to the NorthStar development of a production facility for the medical isotope Molybdenum-99 (Mo99), LANL has been responsible for the design and testing of a target and its cooling. The target is comprised of a stack of Mo100 disks separated by coolant flow gaps between the disks and between the first disk and a housing window, which separates the target and its coolant from the vacuum of the beam line. The target, and therefore its cooling requirements, evolved steadily over the years of system development

Niowave Flow Testing of the High Power Converter - FY 21

Design work for a 100 kW converter to produce a neutron flux via electron impact on a flowing stream of liquid metal lead-bismuth (LBE) was conducted in FY20. In FY21, the focus shifted to a 20 kW converter which was designed in collaboration with Niowave engineers. A flow visualization model is needed to validate model results for the 20 kW converter and ensure adequate coolant flow over containment structures. This work highlights the mockup that was made with quartz side plates by LANL.

NorthStar Facility Target Fab and Flow Testing - FY 21

The facility target fabrication and flow testing activity will consist of flow tests using the blower system at LANL to test the disk holder and target, both redesigned by the NorthStar prime contractor. The housing and transition system delivering helium cooling to the disc holder and target will be fabricated and tested at LANL facilities. The tests will include pressure drop versus flow measurements through the target and housing, optical flow diagnostics and fiber optic imaging of the disc stack. The pressure drop measurements will be compared to CFD simulations to verify the latter, the optical flow diagnostics will be used to determine whether modifications made to the housing and target holder allow sufficient flow through the bottom of the housing to adequately cool it and the fiber optics will be used to image the discs during operation as a proof of concept of the diagnostic, to be used at NorthStar facilities during preproduction testing. The work is a Partial Fulfillment of the Deliverable Requirement for NorthStar Facility Target Fab and Flow Testing and Production Target Testing Support by LANL

High Brightness High Duty Factor Negative Ion Beam Injector [Slides]

The high brightness negative ion injector combines multiple individual low-duty-factor H- ion sources (multiplexing) in a manner that allows flexibility in final pulse format and beam duty factor up to CW and increases reliability by eliminating an otherwise single-point failure usually associated with using a single ion source. The multiplexing of multiple beams in new injector system also preserves the beam quality of each individual ion source, eliminating a significant source of beam quality degradation usually associated with combining beams.

Parallel Simulation of Beam Dynamics in Particle Accelerators [Slides]

LW3D was used to explore the expected CSR from an undulator-based diagnostic using a first-principles approach. It was also used for comparison with an analytic Green-function approach. LW3D was extended to model transport systems involving dipoles and quadrupoles. It was used to explore the radiation produced in a 4-dipole bunch compressor. Radiation ahead of the electron bunch at the beamline exit was shown to be associated with wavefronts produced in upstream dipoles overtaking the bunch.

Niowave Design and Analysis of a High Power Converter - FY 21

LANL provided support to Niowave Inc. on the design and analysis of the Mk. 4 and Mk. 5, 20 kW converter. The Mk. 4 converter design consisted of lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) flowing over a divider plate to create a waterfall. Niowave, with feedback from LANL, improved on the Mk.4 divider plate and “horn” region of the converter to create the Mk. 5 version of the converter.

EM and beam dynamics modeling of CCL with CST Studio

The 800-MeV proton linac at LANSCE consists of a drift-tube linac, which brings the beam to 100 MeV, followed by a coupled-cavity linac (CCL). Each of 44 CCL modules contain multiple tanks, and it is fed by a single 805-MHz klystron. CCL tanks are multi-cell blocks of identical re-entrant sidecoupled cavities, which are followed by drifts with magnetic quadrupole doublets. Bridge couplers – special cavities displaced from the beam axis – electromagnetically couple CCL tanks over such drifts. We have developed 3D CST models of CCL tanks of the LANSCE linac. Their electromagnetic analysis is performed using MicroWave Studio. Beam dynamics is modeled with Particle Studio for bunch trains with realistic beam distributions using the CST calculated RF fields and quadrupole magnetic fields to determine the output beam parameters.

Numerical Analysis and Flow Induced Vibration Studies in Pressurized Helium Gas Cooling Channels

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is working with NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes (NMR) on their efforts to produce Mo-99 from the irradiation of Mo-100 targets. The NMR target consists of an Inconel window that allows the electron beam to penetrate and irradiate a stack of Mo-100 discs. The irradiation process generates large amounts of heat and is cooled using pressurized helium gas flowing at 400 g/s. LANL provides both numerical analysis support and experimental support. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for both 300 g/s and 400 g/s are performed on the NMR target to analyze the helium flow through the NMR system. The pressure drop, the mass flow rate through each of the disc and window channels and the force applied on the first disc are some of the quantities estimated using CFD. These results will be combined with Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) estimates of heat flux into the system from the electron beam to perform conjugate heat transfer analysis (CHT). The experiments presented in this report focus on the effect of the flow induced vibrations from helium flowing through the coolant gaps between the discs. There is concern that the flow induced vibrations may lead to excessive mass loss of the enriched Mo-100 discs, and the goal would be to mitigate the mass loss. This work presents benchtop tests of flow through a subset of the target stack which involves high speed imaging and displacement measurements used to estimate disc vibration, as well as mass loss.

Delivery of H - / H + Beams to Area A

We explore the relative merits of transporting the beam from the H + ion source and from the H - ion source to Area-A for low current applications. Transporting the H - beam to Area-A using the laser neutralization approach has some risk associated with it and will require some development. Alternative method of delivering H - beam to Area-A includes replacing LDBM00 bending magnet with kicker for sharing beam between Line D and modified Line A. Transporting the H + beam to Area-A will have significant impact on the operation the IPF facility and maintaining high pulse rate to IPF will require major modifications to the transition region of the accelerator and Drift Tube Linac.
