Lasing characteristics of ZrO{sub 2} − Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} − Ho{sub 2}O{sub 3} crystals pumped by a Tm : LiYF{sub 4} laser

Two-micron lasing is obtained on the {sup 5}I{sub 7} → {sup 5}I{sub 8} transition of Ho{sup 3+} ions in ZrO{sub 2} − Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} −Ho{sub 2}O{sub 3} crystals upon resonance pumping into the {sup 5}I{sub 7} level of these ions by a pulsed laser based on a Tm : LiYF{sub 4} crystal. The efficiency of conversion of pump radiation incident on the crystal to laser radiation and the slope lasing efficiency at a pulse duration of 8 ms and a pulse repetition rate of 10 Hz were 25% and 28%, respectively. The influence of the processing parameters on the reactive flash sintering of ZrO 2 -CeO 2

Reactive flash sintering (RFS) is a method that was recently developed to produce dense single-phase bulk ceramic parts through solid-state reactions in a single-step that only takes a few minutes. The influence of the RFS parameters on the phase purity of a simple mixed oxide, (Zr 0.8 ,Ce 0.2 )O 2 , was investigated. Parameters such as furnace temperature, furnace atmosphere, electric current density, and alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) were examined. It was found that (Zr 0.8 ,Ce 0.2 )O 2 pellets with high densities, above 90% of its theoretical density, can be produced by RFS in a few minutes when RFS occurs under oxidizing atmospheres, AC fields with current densities of 100 mA·mm –2 , and at a furnace temperature of 1200°C. Reducing conditions such as Ar-H 2 atmosphere and DC fields, low furnace temperatures, and low current densities resulted in phase impurities and poor reactions between the ZrO 2 and the CeO 2 powders. These results show that RFS is a useful method to produce mixed oxides, but it is very sensitive to the processing parameters. This is the first time that the influence of most of the RFS processing parameters has been studied systematically. Thus, the present work aims to provide guidelines on selecting the right processing parameters when exploring RFS.

Atomic-scale structure of ZrO 2 : Formation of metastable polymorphs

Metastable phases can exist within local minima in the potential energy landscape when they are kinetically “trapped” by various processing routes, such as thermal treatment, grain size reduction, chemical doping, interfacial stress, or irradiation. Despite the importance of metastable materials for many technological applications, little is known about the underlying structural mechanisms of the stabilization process and atomic-scale nature of the resulting defective metastable phase. Investigating ion-irradiated and nanocrystalline zirconia with neutron total scattering experiments, we show that metastable tetragonal ZrO 2 consists of an underlying structure of ferroelastic, orthorhombic nanoscale domains stabilized by a network of domain walls. The apparent long-range tetragonal structure that can be recovered to ambient conditions is only the configurational ensemble average of the underlying orthorhombic domains. This structural heterogeneity with a distinct short-range order is more broadly applicable to other nonequilibrium materials and provides insight into the synthesis and recovery of functional metastable phases with unique physical and chemical properties.

Highly efficient Pt catalyst on newly designed CeO 2 -ZrO 2 -Al 2 O 3 support for catalytic removal of pollutants from vehicle exhaust

Pt-CeO 2 catalysts have been widely studied for the vehicle emission control. Designing novel CeO 2 based supports with improved physical-chemical properties has become a research hotspot to further promote the catalytic performance and stability of Pt-CeO 2 catalysts. In this work, through utilizing a unique, two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method for ceria-zirconia-alumina (CZA-T) support preparation, a Pt single site catalyst (Pt/CZA-T) with excellent thermal stability was synthesized. Higher oxidation activity and Oxygen storage capacity (OSC) were achieved on activated Pt/CZA-T, comparing to Pt catalysts on regular CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 (Pt/CA) and one-step prepared CeZrO x /Al 2 O 3 (Pt/CZA). Via the modification of hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of γ-Al 2 O 3 by this unique T-IWI method, finer Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 2 particles with higher density of surface defects were formed on CZA-T, on which a higher Pt dispersion and stronger Pt-O-Ce interaction were achieved. Upon activation, smaller, well-dispersed Pt clusters on CZA-T were generated. It was concluded that the CO oxidation performance and OSC were highly related to the size of Pt clusters on different supports that we have developed. Finally, more Pt sites located at Pt cluster-CeZrO x interfaces, which were the real active sites, were responsible for the highest OSC function and CO oxidation activity of activated Pt/CZA-T catalyst.

CH 4 combustion over a commercial Pd/CeO 2 -ZrO 2 three-way catalyst: Impact of thermal aging and sulfur exposure

Thermal aging and sulfur poisoning are major problems influencing the efficiency and lifetime of natural gas three-way catalysts (TWCs) during real-world operation. In the present study, thermal aging and sulfur-induced deactivations on CH 4 combustion were investigated over commercial monolithic honeycombs, i.e., Pd/CexZr 1-x O 2 (CZ)-based TWCs that are thermally aged in the bench (HTA), followed by being operated behind the stoichiometric natural gas engine in high sulfur fuel (HTA + S). In this work, both HTA and HTA + S samples show degraded performance in CH 4 combustion relative to the fresh one, which are caused by the reconstruction of Pd species induced by thermal aging and the decreased reducibility of the support. The 18 O 2 labelling experiments show that in all cases CH 4 combustion proceeds via a MvK mechanism in which lattice O (OL) plays a key role. The sulfation aging (HTA + S sample) promotes the activation of CH 4 and O 2 by forming Pd δ+ -(SO$_4^{2-}$) δ- and Ce 3+ -VO couples at the interface as compared to HTA sample. However, such a promotion effect could be compromised by the blocking effect of sulfate on the exchange of O L from the bulk to the surface and across the surface. The fundamental understanding of thermal and S deactivation mechanisms from this study could help to predict a real-world lifetime use curve of natural gas TWCs.

Effect of Nanoscale Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 2–δ Infiltrant and Steam Content on Ni–(Y 2 O 3 ) 0.08 (ZrO 2 ) 0.92 Fuel Electrode Degradation during High-Temperature Electrolysis

Studies of Ni–yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fuel electrode degradation mechanisms in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are complicated by the different possible Ni–YSZ microstructures and compositions, and the variations in the H 2 /H 2 O ratio encountered in an electrolysis stack. Here, in this study, we describe a life testing scheme aimed at providing survey results on degradation as a function of the H 2 O–H 2 composition, with life tests carried out at five different steam contents from 90% to 10%. A Ni–YSZ-supported symmetric cell geometry is employed both with and without infiltrated nanoscale gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC). Impedance spectroscopy is utilized to observe changes in electrochemical characteristics during the life test, and a transmission-line-based equivalent circuit is used to model the data. Post-test electrode microstructures were observed. The results suggest that the GDC infiltrant reduces the electrode polarization resistance and provides more stable electrode polarization over a range of conditions.
