Hybrid Ion-Detector/Data-Acquisition System for a TOF-MS

A modified ion-detector/data-acquisition system has been devised to increase the dynamic range of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) that, previously, included a microchannel-plate detector and a data-acquisition system based on counting pulses and time-tagging them by use of a time-to-digital converter (TDC). The dynamic range of the TOF-MS was limited by saturation of the microchannel plate detector, which can handle no more than a few million counts per second. The modified system includes (1) a combined microchannel plate/discrete ion multiplier and (2) a hybrid data-acquisition system that simultaneously performs analog current or voltage measurements and multianode single-ion-pulse-counting time-of-flight measurements to extend the dynamic range of a TDC into the regime in which a mass peak comprises multiple ions arriving simultaneously at the detector. The multianode data are used to determine, in real time, whether the detector is saturated. When saturation is detected, the data-acquisition system selectively enables circuitry that simultaneously determines the ion-peak intensity by measuring the time profile of the analog current or voltage detector-output signal.

Voltage Sensors Monitor Harmful Static

A tiny sensor, small enough to be worn on clothing, now monitors voltage changes near sensitive instruments after being created to alert Agency workers to dangerous static buildup near fuel operations and avionics. San Diego s Quasar Federal Systems received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from Kennedy Space Center to develop its remote voltage sensor (RVS), a dime-sized electrometer designed to measure triboelectric changes in the environment. One of the unique qualities of the RVS is that it can detect static at greater distances than previous devices, measuring voltage changes from a few centimeters to a few meters away, due to its much-improved sensitivity.

The LeRC rail accelerators: Test designs and diagnostic techniques

The feasibility of using rail accelerators for various in-space and to-space propulsion applications was investigated. A 1 meter, 24 sq mm bore accelerator was designed with the goal of demonstrating projectile velocities of 15 km/sec using a peak current of 200 kA. A second rail accelerator, 1 meter long with a 156.25 sq mm bore, was designed with clear polycarbonate sidewalls to permit visual observation of the plasma arc. A study of available diagnostic techniques and their application to the rail accelerator is presented. Specific topics of discussion include the use of interferometry and spectroscopy to examine the plasma armature as well as the use of optical sensors to measure rail displacement during acceleration. Standard diagnostics such as current and voltage measurements are also discussed.

Cross-contact chain

A system is provided for use with wafers that include multiple integrated circuits that include two conductive layers in contact at multiple interfaces. Contact chains are formed beside the integrated circuits, each contact chain formed of the same two layers as the circuits, in the form of conductive segments alternating between the upper and lower layers and with the ends of the segments connected in series through interfaces. A current source passes a current through the series-connected segments, by way of a pair of current tabs connected to opposite ends of the series of segments. While the current flows, voltage measurements are taken between each of a plurality of pairs of voltage tabs, the two tabs of each pair connected to opposite ends of an interface that lies along the series-connected segments. A plot of interface conductances on normal probability chart enables prediction of the yield of good integrated circuits from the wafer.

Polymer Electrolyte-Based Ambient Temperature Oxygen Microsensors for Environmental Monitoring

An ambient temperature oxygen microsensor, based on a Nafion polymer electrolyte, has been developed and was microfabricated using thin-film technologies. A challenge in the operation of Nafion-based sensor systems is that the conductivity of Nafion film depends on the humidity in the film. Nafion film loses conductivity when the moisture content in the film is too low, which can affect sensor operation. The advancement here is the identification of a method to retain the operation of the Nafion films in lower humidity environments. Certain salts can hold water molecules in the Nafion film structure at room temperature. By mixing salts with the Nafion solution, water molecules can be homogeneously distributed in the Nafion film increasing the film s hydration to prevent Nafion film from being dried out in low-humidity environment. The presence of organics provides extra sites in the Nafion film to promote proton (H+) mobility and thus improving Nafion film conductivity and sensor performance. The fabrication of ambient temperature oxygen microsensors includes depositing basic electrodes using noble metals, and metal oxides layer on one of the electrode as a reference electrode. The use of noble metals for electrodes is due to their strong catalytic properties for oxygen reduction. A conducting polymer Nafion, doped with water-retaining components and extra sites facilitating proton movement, was used as the electrolyte material, making the design adequate for low humidity environment applications. The Nafion solution was coated on the electrodes and air-dried. The sensor operates at room temperature in potentiometric mode, which measures voltage differences between working and reference electrodes in different gases. Repeat able responses to 21-percent oxygen in nitrogen were achieved using nitrogen as a baseline gas. Detection of oxygen from 7 to 21 percent has also been demonstrated. The room-temperature oxygen micro sensor developed has extremely low power consumption (no heating for operation, no voltage applied to the sensor, only a voltmeter is needed to measure the output), is small in size, is simple to batch-fabricate, and is high in sensor yield. It is applicable in a wide humidity range, with improved operation in low humidity after the additives were added to the Nafion film. Through further improvement and development, the sensor can be used for aerospace applications such as fuel leak detection, fire detection, and environmental monitoring.

Silicon device performance measurements to support temperature range enhancement

The results of the NPN bipolar transistor (BJT) (2N6023) breakdown voltage measurements were analyzed. Switching measurements were made on the NPN BJT, the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) (TA9796) and the N-channel metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) (RFH75N05E). Efforts were also made to build a H-bridge inverter. Also discussed are the plans that have been made to do life testing on the devices, to build an inductive switching test circuit and to build a dc/dc switched mode converter.

Spin Rectification and Electrically Controlled Spin Transport in Molecular-Ferroelectrics-Based Spin Valves

We report a spin-rectification effect in a spin-valve structure consisting of ferroelectric croconic acid (C 5 H 2 O 5 ) sandwiched between ferromagnetic electrodes La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 and Co, which can be switched between a high-resistance (off ) and a low-resistance (on) state by a poling voltage. In the off state, the magnetoresistance (MR) sign reverses with the measurement voltage with a 0.1-V offset, suggesting a spin-rectification behavior, while in the on state the MR remains negative. These observations can be understood in terms of electrically controlled interfacial energy-band alignment either from the electrostatic effect or from the interfacial redox process. In conclusion, the observed spin-rectification effect suggests thepossibility of diodelike devices for spin-polarized current.

Nonlinear electrical transport near the metal–insulator transition in V 4 O 7 thin films

Nonlinear electrical transport associated with correlated electronic states has been widely investigated in transition-metal oxides near metal–insulator transitions. Here, in this study, we investigate nonlinear transport and threshold switching in sputter-deposited V 4 O 7 thin films grown on fused silica substrates. Temperature-dependent transport measurements show a metal–insulator transition near 240 K with negligible thermal hysteresis, defining the temperature scale that governs the nonlinear electrical response. Current–voltage measurements reveal reproducible bipolar threshold switching over a broad temperature range, with the threshold voltage decreasing systematically as the transition temperature is approached. Electrothermal finite-element simulations reproduce the measured switching characteristics and show that switching occurs when localized Joule heating drives a confined region of the device toward the transition temperature. The simulated peak local temperature at threshold lies close to the intrinsic metal–insulator transition temperature of V 4 O 7 , establishing that the nonlinear electrical response originates from electrothermal feedback acting on the strongly temperature-dependent conductivity near the transition. These results identify V 4 O 7 thin films as a model correlated-oxide system in which volatile threshold switching emerges from proximity to an extended metal–insulator transition.

An investigation of impurity redistribution in diffused layer on /n+/-p silicon solar cells parameters

Recent calculations by Wang et al. (1974) have shown that the short-circuit current for silicon solar cells is sensitive to the impurity distribution in the diffused and base region. In the present work, these theoretical results were verified by experimentally investigating the impurity profile and sheet resistance of the diffused layers of (n+)-p silicon solar cells fabricated by normal diffusion processes and at subsequently various drive-in times. Impurity profiles of the n+ diffused layer, measured by differential Hall and resistivity technique, resemble the erfc distribution. The junction depth is larger as drive-in time increases. Measured short-circuit current is in agreement with calculated ones. Open-circuit voltage is independent of drive-in times, and its calculated values are consistent with capacitance-voltage measurements.
