Collaborative Research: Vlasov-Maxwell Simulations to Resolve Electron Heating and Dissipation, in Quasi-Perpendicular Shocks

The major goals of the project are to study three fundamental questions related to collisionless, non-relativistic, quasi-perpendicular shocks by combining continuum Vlasov-Maxwell simulations (the Gkeyll framework) and high resolution, in situ heliospheric observations from the MMS spacecraft. The specific questions are: 1. How and where are electrons energized and heated in a quasi-perpendicular shock, including the ultimate source of entropy production? 2. What role do waves, turbulence, and secondary instabilities play in the conversion of directed flow energy to electron energy? 3. How do the parameters of the shock determine the energization of electrons?

Collaborative Research: Vlasov–Maxwell Simulations to resolve electron heating and dissipation, in quasiperpendicular shocks (Final Technical Report)

The project is to study electron heating at quasi-perpendicular shocks. We have analyzed measurements from the Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft and particle-in-cell simulations to address the question. One key discovery is that waves and are excited in the shock transition region, which further develop into complicated structures and thin current layers, which contribute to accelerate and heat electrons. We further investigated the excitation and evolution of these waves and structures, and their association with ion and electron dynamics. In addition, the analysis technique of Vlasov equation terms is further applied to study electron dynamics at the dayside magnetopause, to understand the effect of density, velocity and temperature variations on electron distributions and kinetics.

A Structure-Preserving Decorated Particle Method for the Vlasov-Poisson System

We revisit the Scovel-Weinstein framework (Scovel & Weinstein, CPAM 1994) for reducing the Vlasov-Poisson system while preserving its Hamiltonian structure. Standard particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithms approximate the distribution function by macro-particles with position and velocity. In contrast, Scovel-Weinstein decorated particles involve additional shape degrees of freedom, while maintaining a finite-dimensional reduction with Hamiltonian structure inherited from the continuum model. Although the original work established this structure three decades ago, its computational potential has remained largely unexplored. We present a practical implementation of the Scovel-Weinstein model and compare it with a standard PIC algorithm. Numerical experiments demonstrate that macro-particles in standard PIC can be replaced by far fewer decorated particles while retaining comparable accuracy. This decorated particle approach offers a new structure-preserving paradigm for kinetic plasma simulation.

Vlasov equation eigenvalues and eigenvectors for Fourier-Hermite dispersion matrices of order greater than 1,000

The connection between the Van Kampen and Landau representations of the Vlasov equations has been extended to Fourier-Hermite expansions containing more than 1000 terms by taking advantage of the properties of tridiagonal matrices. These numerical results are regarded as conclusive indications of the nonuniformly convergent behavior of the approximation curve in the limit of an infinite number of terms and represent an extension of work begun by Grant (1967) and by Grant and Feix (1967).

Equilibrium configurations of Vlasov plasmas carrying a current component along an external magnetic field.

A model of equilibrium configurations of Vlasov plasmas is considered which represents a combination of the models of Harris (1962) and Nicholson (1963). These plasma configurations carry a current component along an external magnetic field. The considered slab model contains a diamagnetic current and a field-aligned current for an arbitrary ratio of particle pressure to magnetic pressure of the applied constant field. For a fixed pressure ratio and field-aligned current, the model admits a family of equilibrium solutions in which the diamagnetic currents range from zero to a maximum value. The amount of diamagnetic current flowing in a machine depends on the width of the machine, the field-aligned current and other plasma parameters.

Lagrangian formulation of the one-dimensional Vlasov equation

A new formulation of the one-dimensional Vlasov equation is derived which is analogous to the Kalman-transformed cold-plasma equations. The equations are shown to yield nonsecular, nonlinear approximations to a source or boundary-value problem. It is suggested that the formulation may have other applications in nonlinear plasma theory.

One-dimensional inhomogeneous Vlasov equilibria

Bernstein, Greene, and Kruskal (1957) showed how, given the electrostatic potential as a function of position, the entire distribution function for ions, and the distribution function for untrapped electrons in a one-dimensional two-species Vlasov plasma, one could determine the distribution function for the trapped electrons as the solution of an Abel integral equation. This result is generalized by replacing the statements about the distribution functions with the specification of the velocity-space distribution functions of both species at a single position in the plasma. Limiting cases are shown to correspond to the earlier treatment, and the applicability of the theory to experiment is discussed.
