Data, Photographs, Videos, and Information for the Niwot Ridge Subalpine Forest (US-NR1) AmeriFlux site

This data package contains data and information about the operation of the Niwot Ridge Subalpine Forest AmeriFlux site (US-NR1) between Nov 1998 to the present (2020). This data archive supplements the primary 30-min data storage for the US-NR1 data (i.e., https://doi.org/10.17190/AMF/1246088) by providing the following: (i) five-minute statistics (means, variances, covariances) of all data measured by the data system between Nov 1998 and September 2020 in netCDF format, (ii) CSV data files saved within the memory of the CR23X data loggers (as well as an archive of the data logger programs), (iii) an archive of previous 30-min ASCII data versions of the US-NR1 AmeriFlux data and information related to each data release (a replica of what can be found at http://urquell.colorado.edu/data_ameriflux/), (iv) a web calendar (in HTML format) documenting activity at the site (a replica of http://urquell.colorado.edu/calendar/), (v) photos (over 15,000) and video taken at the site between years 2001 and present day (2020), and (vi) several auxiliary datasets, primary related to trees near the site, soil moisture and soil temperature, and subcanopy radiation data. The data package is setup so that the web calendar, photos, and electronic logbook can be easily accessed on a local computer using a web browser. The provided data files are in either netCDF, CSV, ASCII, or MATLAB format. To obtain a better understanding about the archive, please start by reading the PDF: README_ESS_DIVE_USNR1_readme_first.pdf.

Videos of Chemically Activated Frontal Polymerization of Thermosets

Video recordings of the frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) of thermoset polymer specimens in 10mm glass test tubes were collected in order to measure the front speed resulting from varied front initiation methods. Maximum front temperature was also measured. Polymerization resins comprised of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) with 5 wt% 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) added, grubbs’ second generation catalyst, and tributyl phosphite (TBP) inhibitor (8000:1:1 monomer:initiator:inhibitor ratio). Polymerization fronts were triggered using concentrated solutions of grubbs’ third generation catalyst in various solvents.

Next-Generation Video Ice Particle Sampler Field Campaign Report

The next-generation video ice particle sampler (ngVIPS) was operated on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s tethered balloon system (TBS) during the IFFExO (Ice Fog Field Experiment at Oliktok Point) project in November, 2020. The purpose of the project was to study ice fog microphysics and the environmental conditions during ice fog to enable better predictions during low-visibility conditions. This project was conducted at the site of the third ARM Mobile Facility (AMF3) at Oliktok Point, Alaska. Among a suite of other instruments, the ngVIPS was operated to observe atmospheric ice particles.

Short video provides broad overview of the Lab’s 80-year history

In celebration of the Lab’s 80th anniversary this month, join National Security Research Center Senior Historian, Alan Carr (NSRCMS), as he provides a six-and-a-half-minute overview of the Lab’s history. The video, co-produced by Brian Clayton (CEA-MP) and Howard Coe (CEA-MP), covers three phases of the Lab’s evolution, from a nuclear weapons laboratory, then a nuclear science laboratory, to its manifestation today as a multidisciplinary laboratory.

An AI-Based 3D Bat Movement Tracking System at Wind Energy Facilities Using Multi-Thermal Video Cameras

The poster at the 15th Wind Wildlife Research Meeting discusses how to leverage the potential of real-time thermal-imaging methodologies in quantifying nocturnal bat activities at wind turbines, using 3D computer vision techniques within a deep learning framework. This innovation enables the automatic detection and classification of bats, birds, and insects in thermal-imaging videos captured at wind turbine sites, facilitating efficient and accurate data analysis for enhanced understanding and mitigation of bat-wind turbine interactions.

Introducing the Video In Situ Snowfall Sensor (VISSS)

The open-source Video In Situ Snowfall Sensor (VISSS) is introduced as a novel instrument for the characterization of particle shape and size in snowfall. The VISSS consists of two cameras with LED backlights and telecentric lenses that allow accurate sizing and combine a large observation volume with relatively high pixel resolution and a design that limits wind disturbance. VISSS data products include various particle properties such as maximum extent, cross-sectional area, perimeter, complexity, and sedimentation velocity. Initial analysis shows that the VISSS provides robust statistics based on up to 10 000 unique particle observations per minute. Comparison of the VISSS with the collocated PIP (Precipitation Imaging Package) and Parsivel instruments at Hyytiälä, Finland, shows excellent agreement with the Parsivel but reveals some differences for the PIP that are likely related to PIP data processing and limitations of the PIP with respect to observing smaller particles. The open-source nature of the VISSS hardware plans, data acquisition software, and data processing libraries invites the community to contribute to the development of the instrument, which has many potential applications in atmospheric science and beyond.

Computer Vision: EO Imaging & Video Tasks, Metrics, and Datasets [Slides]

Classification is an assignment of an image to a certain category. Localization is identified by the box surrounding the object in the image. Object detection detects instances of semantic objects of a certain class. Semantic segmentation categorizes all the pixels of an image into classes of objects. Instance segmentation identifies each instance of each object in the image. Panoptic (i.e., showing or seeing everything at once) segmentation is a combination of semantic and instance segmentation and classifies all the pixels in the image.
