Molecular and bulk isotopic analyses of organic matter in marls of the Mulhouse Basin (Tertiary, Alsace, France)

Contents of 13C in kerogens and carbonates in 21 samples from a core of the MAX borehole, Mulhouse Evaporite Basin, range from -27.3 to -23.5 and -3.7 to -1.8% vs PDB, respectively. Organic nitrogen in the same samples is enriched in 15N relative to atmospheric N2 by 12.2-15.7%. Hydrogen indices and delta values for kerogens vary systematically with facies, averaging 493 mg HC/g Corg and -25.7% in the most saline facies (dominated by inputs from aquatic sources) and 267 mg HC/g Corg and -23.7% in the least saline facies (50/50 aquatic/terrigenous). Values of delta were measured for individual aliphatic hydrocarbons from three samples representing three different organic facies. For all samples, terrigenous inputs were unusually rich in 13C, the estimated delta value for bulk terrigenous debris, apparently derived partly from CAM plants, being -22.5%. In the most saline facies, isotopic evidence indicates the mixing of 13C-depleted products of photosynthetic bacteria with 13C-enriched products of halotolerant eukaryotic algae. At lower salinities, a change in the producer community is marked by a decrease in the 13C content of algal lipids. The content of 13C in algal lipids increases in the least saline facies, due either to succession of different organisms or to decreased concentrations of dissolved CO2.

U-Th-Pb systematics of some Apollo 17 lunar samples and implications for a lunar basin excavation chronology

U, Th, and Pb concentrations and lead isotopic compositions of selected Apollo 17 soil and rock samples are presented. Concordia treatments of U-Pb whole samples of Apollo 17 mare basalts and highland rocks probably reflect several early thermal events about 4.5 b.y. old more consistently than do U-Pb ages of samples collected at other lunar sites. We propose that all lunar U-Th-Pb data reflect a multistate U-Pb evolution history most easily understood as being related to a complex planetesimal bombardment history of the moon which apparently dominated lunar events from about 4.5 to about 3.9 b.y. ago. Semi-distinct events at about 4.0, about 4.2, and 4.4-4.5 b.y. are evident on whole-rock frequency versus Pb-207/Pb-206 age histograms. Each of these events may reflect multiple cratering episodes. For mare basalts, complete resetting of the source rock U-Pb systems owing to Pb loss relative to U was apparently often approached after a major planetesimal impact.

Acquisition and processing of data for isotope-ratio-monitoring mass spectrometry

Methods are described for continuous monitoring of signals required for precise analyses of 13C, 18O, and 15N in gas streams containing varying quantities of CO2 and N2. The quantitative resolution (i.e. maximum performance in the absence of random errors) of these methods is adequate for determination of isotope ratios with an uncertainty of one part in 10(5); the precision actually obtained is often better than one part in 10(4). This report describes data-processing operations including definition of beginning and ending points of chromatographic peaks and quantitation of background levels, allowance for effects of chromatographic separation of isotopically substituted species, integration of signals related to specific masses, correction for effects of mass discrimination, recognition of drifts in mass spectrometer performance, and calculation of isotopic delta values. Characteristics of a system allowing off-line revision of parameters used in data reduction are described and an algorithm for identification of background levels in complex chromatograms is outlined. Effects of imperfect chromatographic resolution are demonstrated and discussed and an approach to deconvolution of signals from coeluting substances described.

Petrology of Zircon-Bearing Diogenite Northwest Africa 10666

The howardite, eucrite, and diogenite (HED) meteorites are a group of achondrites thought to be derived from the asteroid 4 Vesta, though there is active debate as to whether all diogenites are part of the HED suite. Petrologic investigation of the HED meteorite group provides a means of understanding early planetary differentiation processes and early evolution of planets in our solar system. Diogenites are predominantly coarse grained ortho-pyroxenites with some samples containing appreciable amounts of clinopyroxene, olivine, chromite, and plagioclase. Accessory metal, troilite, and apatite are common. Many diogenites are brecciated, however, there are few poorly to unbrecciated samples. Diogenites are important because they may represent the lower crust of 4 Vesta. Although Mg isotope data indicates that the sources of diogenites are ancient, their crystallization ages are difficult to constrain due to their protracted thermal histories. The limited chronologic data for diogenites also limits the ability to test petrogenetic connections with eucrites and even parent body. A reliable and high closure-temperature isotope system, such as U-Pb in zircon, is needed to address the timing of diogenite igneous crystallization. Description of the textures and mineralogy of diogenites are essential to their classification and understanding their formation, in particular, whether all phases are petrogenetically related. Here, we present detailed petrographic data from a rare zircon-bearing feldspathic diogenite, Northwest Africa (NWA) 10666 and provide textural evidence for igneous crystallization of the zircon.

U-Th-Pb systematics in three Apollo 14 basalts and the problem of initial Pb in lunar rocks.

The isotopic composition of Pb and the elemental concentration of U, Th and Pb were measured on 'total' rock samples 14053, 14073 and 14310 and on mineral separates of 14310 and 14053. These are the first Pb-U isochrons obtained for lunar basalts and indicate a reasonable solution to the previous discrepancy between the different methods of 'absolute' age determination. The resulting U-Pb isochron ages are compatible with the Rb-Sr and K-Ar ages on the same rocks. However, it is not possible to establish a precise time of 'crystallization' from the Pb-U data because of the small angle of intersection between the linear arrays and the concordia curve. These data show that total rock model ages do not in general yield crystallization ages. The data on 14310 and 14053 show that these rocks were formed containing a highly radiogenic initial lead which accounts for the excessively high total rock model ages by the U-Th-Pb method. The data prove that at the time of extrusion of some basalts, unsupported lead with extremely high Pb-207/Pb-206 ratios was added to the lunar surface.

Zircon Lu-Hf systematics: Evidence for the episodic development of Archaean greenstone belts

A combined U-Th-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic study of zircons was undertaken in order to determine the provenance and age of an Archean granite-greenstone terrain and to test the detailed application of the Lu-Hf system in various Archean zircons. The eastern Wawa subprovince of the Superior province consists of the low grade Michipicoten and Gamitagama greenstone belts and the granitic terrain. The Hf isotopic data indicate that the typical lithological features of a greenstone belt cycle could be accommodated in a crustal growth model that involved decreasing depth of melting in three isotopically distinct reservoirs: mantle, lower crust and upper crust. The model age of the sources given by the intersection of the lower crustal curve with the bulk earth evolution curve is about 2900 My, in good agreement with the zircon U-Pb basement age. This linear array also has a similar intersection age to that of Proterozoic carbonatite complexes. The general convergence of the other reservoir vectors around this age suggests that mantle depletion, crustal extraction and intracrustal differentiation were all part of the same episodic event. It is also apparent that recycling of older basement was important in the formation of many of the later greenstone belt rocks.

Ion microprobe mass analysis of lunar samples. Lunar sample program

Mass analyses of selected minerals, glasses and soil particles of lunar, meteoritic and terrestrial rocks have been made with the ion microprobe mass analyzer. Major, minor and trace element concentrations have been determined in situ in major and accessory mineral phases in polished rock thin sections. The Pb isotope ratios have been measured in U and Th bearing accessory minerals to yield radiometric age dates and heavy volatile elements have been sought on the surfaces of free particles from Apollo soil samples.

Predissociation of oxygen in the B3Sigma(u)(-) state

The predissociation linewidths and level shifts of vibrational levels of three oxygen isotopic molecules (O2)-16, (O-16)(O-18), and (O2)-18 arising from the interactions of the B3Sigma(u)(-) state with the four repulsive states 5Pi(u), 3Sigma(u)(+), 3Pi(u), and 1Pi(u) have been calculated. A set of parameters characterizing these interactions has been determined. Good agreement between calculated and experimental predissociation widths and shifts has been obtained for all the three isotopic molecules.

Noble gases in the howardites Bholghati and Kapoeta

Analyses of noble gases in whole rock samples of the howardites Bholghati and Kapoeta and grain-size separates of Kapoeta yield evidence for excesses of the Xe isotopes Xe-129 , Xe-131, Xe-132, Xe-134, and Xe-136 in a low-temperture component, similar to lunar excess fission Xe. Such a component may be able to provide chronometric information if the relative abundances of radioactive progenitors (I-129, Pu-244, and U-238) can be determined, but the isotopic spectra obtained are not sufficiently precise to do so. Eucritic clast BH-5 in Bholghati contains Xe produced in situ by the decay of Pu-244. Calculated fission Xe retention ages are 30-70 Ma after the formation of the solar system, consistent with the apparent presence of Sm-146 decay products. Both the clast and the matrix of Bholghati have K-Ar ages of about 2 Ga, suggesting a common thermal event at least that recently.

Some Pb and Sr isotopic measurements on eclogites from the Roberts Victor Mine, South Africa.

Five nodules of eclogite, one nodule of garnet peridotite, and one sample of kimberlite from the Roberts Victor Mine in the Orange Free State were analyzed for concentrations of U, Th, Pb, Rb, and Sr, and also isotopic compositions of Pb and Sr. Results are presented and analyzed. They indicate that the Roberts Victor eclogites have been contaminated by lead from the host rock of kimberlite. This finding suggests that stepwise extraction of lead may be a means of obtaining the isotopic composition of the primary lead in kimberlitic eclogites.

Lead isotopic studies of the Samail ophiolite, Oman

The isotopic composition of Pb and the concentrations of U, Th, and Pb are determined for samples from massive sulfides and lithologic units of the Samail ophiolite. It is shown that the magma that formed the ophiolite was probably derived from a depleted mantle, similar in Pb isotopic composition to the source area of mid-ocean ridge basalt. The gross geochemical characteristics of the mantle sources have remained almost unchanged for the last 100 million years. It is also shown that the U-Th-Pb systematics of the Samail formation indicate that local vertical heterogeneity in the oceanic crust can result from crystal fractionation and metasomatism at, and near, an oceanic spreading center.

Pb isotopes in anorthositic breccias 67075 and 62237 - A search for primitive lunar lead

The lunar Pb isotopic evolution is explored based on an investigation of the U-Th-Pb systematics of the primitive Apollo 16 anorthositic breccias 76075 and 62237. The isotope data for acid-leached residues from 67075 lie within or on a triangle formed by plagioclase, opaques, and a pyroxen-olivine mixture, and the isotope data for 62237 lie within or on a triangle formed by plagioclase, olivine, and pyroxene. The results suggest that the moon had high first-stage values for the Pb evolution equations from the onset.

Implications from Luna 24 sample 24170 to U-Pb evolution in the lunar mantle

The concentrations of U, Th and Pb, as well as the Pb isotopic composition, have been determined for a Luna 24 sample from the Mare Crisium area. A relatively recent disturbance to the U-Pb system during meteorite impact or burial in hot ejecta is suggested by the findings. According to three-stage U-Pb evolution model calculations, the source cumulates of the Luna 24 basalt evolved in a U-238/Pb-204 environment much lower than that of the Apollo mare basalts. A laterally heterogeneous lunar magma ocean, U-Pb fractionation during cumulate formation, and/or lack of KREEP addition to the Luna 24 basalt are also reflected in the calculations.

U-Th-Pb systematics of some Apollo 16 lunar samples

U, Th, and Pb concentrations and lead isotopic compositions of Apollo 16 samples are interpreted as follows: (1) an early period of lunar differentiation of either global or regional scale occurred about 4.47 b.y. ago; (2) the Imbrian impact event affected many Apollo 16 samples about 3.99 b.y. ago; (3) some Apollo 16 metaclastic rocks and breccias contain a large amount of KREEP-like material; (4) lead produced in the early history of the moon has been concentrated in lunar highland soils yielding high Pb-207/Pb-206 ratios corresponding to apparent ages of more than 4.8 b.y.; and (5) South Ray Crater soils reflect the approximately 2-b.y.-old event previously proposed for the Apollo 12 and 14 samples.
