The role of time-history effects in the formulation of the aerodynamics of aircraft dynamics

The scope of any aerodynamic formulation proposing to embrace a range of possible maneuvers is shown to be determined principally by the extent to which the aerodynamic indicial response is allowed to depend on the past motion. Starting from the linearized formulation, in which the indicial response is independent of the past motion, two successively more comprehensive statements about the dependence on the past motion are assigned to the indicial response: (1) dependence only on the recent past and (2) dependence additionally on a characteristic feature of the distant past. The first enables the rational introduction of nonlinear effects and accommodates a description of the rate dependent aerodynamic phenomena characteristic of airfoils in low speed dynamic stall; the second permits a description of the double valued aerodynamic behavior characteristic of certain kinds of aircraft stall. An aerodynamic formulation based on the second statement, automatically embracing the first, may be sufficiently comprehensive to include a large part of the aircraft's possible maneuvers. The results suggest a favorable conclusion regarding the role of dynamic stability experiments in flight dynamics studies.

Airborne spectrophotometry of SN 1987A from 1.7 to 12.6 microns - Time history of the dust continuum and line emission

Spectrophotometric observations of SN 1987A from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are presented for five epochs at 60, 260, 415, 615, and 775 days after the explosion. The low-resolution (lambda/Delta lambda = 50-100) spectra of SN 1987A are combined with data from other wavelengths to model the continuum, subtract the continuum from the spectra to determine line strengths and reveal molecular bands, separate the atomic continuum radiation from the dust continuum, and derive constraints on the grain temperatures and optical depths. A scenario for the evolution of SN 1987A and that of the ejecta from which it arises is obtained on the basis of the analysis of the continuum emission.

On damping mechanisms in beams

A partial differential equation model of a cantilevered beam with a tip mass at its free end is used to study damping in a composite. Four separate damping mechanisms consisting of air damping, strain rate damping, spatial hysteresis and time hysteresis are considered experimentally. Dynamic tests were performed to produce time histories. The time history data is then used along with an approximate model to form a sequence of least squares problems. The solution of the least squares problem yields the estimated damping coefficients. The resulting experimentally determined analytical model is compared with the time histories via numerical simulation of the dynamic response. The procedure suggested here is compared with a standard modal damping ratio model commonly used in experimental modal analysis.

FLEXAN (version 2.0) user's guide

The FLEXAN (Flexible Animation) computer program, Version 2.0 is described. FLEXAN animates 3-D wireframe structural dynamics on the Evans and Sutherland PS300 graphics workstation with a VAX/VMS host computer. Animation options include: unconstrained vibrational modes, mode time histories (multiple modes), delta time histories (modal and/or nonmodal deformations), color time histories (elements of the structure change colors through time), and rotational time histories (parts of the structure rotate through time). Concurrent color, mode, delta, and rotation, time history animations are supported. FLEXAN does not model structures or calculate the dynamics of structures; it only animates data from other computer programs. FLEXAN was developed to aid in the study of the structural dynamics of spacecraft.
