Measurements of quiescent prominence spectra - Ca/+/ double-lambda 8542, 8498 and He lambda 4471, Ti/+/ lambda 4468

High-dispersion measurements of the line profiles of the Ca(+) lines at 8542 and 8498 A and the He 4471-A, Ti(+) 4468-A line pair in the spectra of quiescent solar prominences are presented. The measured Ca(+) and He line profiles are found to be accurately described by the two-component model of Landman et al. (1977) and Landman and Mongillo (1979) in which the prominence along the line of sight consists of a low-temperature region surrounded by high-temperature material representing contributions from the prominence/corona interface; the Ti(+) lines are too weak to distinguish among different models. The Ca(+) data allow a constant infrared line source function for the low-temperature region of 50,000 ergs/sq cm per sec per ster per A to be calculated, which is in disagreement with the previous Ca(+) excitation equilibrium calculations but is consistent with generally accepted values of the electron density and temperature. The integrated intensity ratio of 0.048 between Ti(+) and He emission indicates a low-temperature region temperature of 6620 K and microturbulence of 5.1 km/sec and high-temperature microturbulence of 11 km/sec for Ca(+) and 20 km/sec for He. The results exclude macroturbulence as a possible explanation of the generally observed wing enhancements.

Lunar highland rocks - Element partitioning among minerals. II - Electron microprobe analyses of Al, P, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn and Fe in olivine

Lunar olivines from anorthosites, granulitic impactites, and rocks in the Mg-rich plutonic trend were subjected to electron probe measurements for Al, P, Ca, Ti, Cr and Mn, which show that the FeO/MnO ratio for lunar olivines lies between 80 and 110 with little difference among the rock types. The low values of Ca in lunar olivines indicate slow cooling to subsolidus temperatures, with blocking temperatures of about 750 C for 67667 and 1000 C for 60255,73-alpha determined by the Finnerty and Boyd (1978) experiments. An important paradox is noted in the low Ti content of Fe-rich olivines from anorthosites, although both Ti and Fe tend to become enriched in liquid during fractional distillation. Except for Ca and Mn, olivine from anorthosites has lower minor element values than other rock types. Formation from a chemically distinct system is therefore implied.

CO adsorption on (111) and (100) surfaces of the Pt sub 3 Ti alloy. Evidence for parallel binding and strong activation of CO

The CO adsorption on a 40 atom cluster model of the (111) surface and a 36 atom cluster model of the (100) surface of the Pt3Ti alloy was studied. Parallel binding to high coordinate sites associated with Ti and low CO bond scission barriers are predicted for both surfaces. The binding of CO to Pt sites occurs in an upright orientation. These orientations are a consequence of the nature of the CO pi donation interactions with the surface. On the Ti sites the orbitals donate to the nearly empty Ti 3d band and the antibonding counterpart orbitals are empty. On the Pt sites, however, they are in the filled Pt 5d region of the alloy band, which causes CO to bond in a vertical orientation by 5 delta donation from the carbon end.

Absolute isotopic abundances of Ti in meteorites

A general formalism is presented for determining possible isotope compositions of exotic Ti, and illustrated with results from Ti isotope abundances measured in Ca-Al-rich inclusions of the Allende and Leoville meteorites and samples of other meteorites. Previously identified correlations between Ti-50 and Ca-48 in FUN (isotope fractionation effects and unknown nucleosynthetic effects) inclusions is shown to hold true, thereby supporting contributions from a neutron-rich equilibrium or nucleosynthetic equilibrium during formation of the meteorites. Extension of the study to carbonaceous meteorites indicated that condensation, volatilization and recondensation occurred during formation, although the isotope fractionation observed cannot yet be explained.

Evidence for extreme Ti-50 enrichments in primitive meteorites

The results of the first high mass resolution ion microprobe study of Ti isotopic compositions in individual refractory grains from primitive carbonaceous meteorites are reported. One hibonite from the Murray carbonaceous chondrite has a 10 percent excess of Ti-50, 25 times higher than the maximum value previously reported for bulk samples of refractory inclusions from carbonaceous chondrites. The variation of the Ti compositions between different hibonite grains, and among pyroxenes from a single Allende refractory inclusion, indicates isotopic inhomogeneities over small scale lengths in the solar nebula and emphasizes the importance of the analysis of small individual phases. This heterogeneity makes it unlikely that the isotopic anomalies were carried into the solar system in the gas phase.

Material characterization of superplastically formed titanium (Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo) sheet

The aerospace industry has focused considerable interest on the near-alpha titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo (Ti-6242) because of both its high-temperature properties and its superplastic forming (SPF) capabilities. This paper describes current research to characterize selected mechanical properties of Ti-6242 sheet in the SPF-strained condition, both with and without heat treatment, and compares the results with those obtained on as-received material. Tensile and creep tests were conducted, and metallographic analysis was performed to show the effect of 100 to 700 percent SPF strain on titanium properties. Analysis shows that as a result of SPF processing, both tensile and yield strengths, as well as elongation, are moderately reduced. Creep tests at 800 F and 1000 F show that the SPF processed material displays superior creep resistance compared with the as-received material. A post-SPF duplex-anneal heat treatment had no beneficial effect on tensile and creep properties.

Microhardness and lattice parameter calibrations of the oxygen solid solutions of unalloyed alpha-titanium and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo

Standards were prepared for calibrating microanalyses of dissolved oxygen in unalloyed alpha-Ti and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo. Foils of both of these materials were homogenized for 120 hours in vacuum at 871 C following short exposures to the ambient atmosphere at 854 C that had partially oxidized the foils. The variation of Knoop microhardness with oxygen content was calibrated for both materials using 15-g and 5-g indentor loads. The unit-cell lattice parameters were calibrated for the unalloyed alpha-Ti. Example analyses demonstrate the usefulness of these calibrations and support an explanation of an anomaly in the lattice parameter variation. The results of the calibrations have been tabulated and summarized using predictive equations.

The isothermal fatigue behavior of a unidirectional SiC/Ti composite and the Ti alloy matrix

The high temperature fatigue behavior of a metal matrix composite (MMC) consisting of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) matrix reinforced by 33 vol percent of continuous unidirectional SiC fibers was experimentally and analytically evaluated. Isothermal MMC fatigue tests with constant amplitude loading parallel to the fiber direction were performed at 300 and 550 C. Comparative fatigue tests of the Ti-15-3 matrix alloy were also conducted. Composite fatigue behavior and the in-situ stress state of the fiber and matrix were analyzed with a micromechanical model, the Concentric Cylinder Model (CCM). The cyclic stress-strain response of the composite was stable at 300 C. However, an increase in cyclic mean strain foreshortened MMC fatigue life at high strain ranges at 550 C. Fatigue tests of the matrix alloy and CCM analyses indicated this response was associated with stress relaxation of the matrix in the composite.

Hydride structures in Ti-aluminides subjected to high temperature and hydrogen pressure charging conditions

The distribution and chemistry of hydrides produced in single and dual phase alloys with a composition near TiAl have been investigated by using a combination of TEM and X-ray diffraction techniques. The alloys were exposed at 650 C to 13.8 MPa of gaseous H2 for 100 h. In the single-phase gamma alloy, large hydrides preferentially nucleated on the grain boundaries and matrix dislocations and a population of small hydrides was distributed throughout the matrix. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns from these hydrides indicated that they have an fcc structure with a lattice parameter of 0.45 nm. EDAX analysis of the hydrides showed that they were enriched in Ti. The hydrides were mostly removed by vacuum annealing at 800 C for 24 h. On dissolution of the hydrides, the chemistry of hydride-free regions of the grain boundary returned to the matrix composition, suggesting that Ti segregation accompanied the hydride formation rather than Ti enrichment causing the formation of the hydride.

Deposition of adherent Ag-Ti duplex films on ceramics in a multiple-cathode sputter deposition system

The adhesion of Ag films deposited on oxide ceramics can be increased by first depositing intermediate films of active metals such as Ti. Such duplex coatings can be fabricated in a widely used three target sputter deposition system. It is shown here that the beneficial effect of the intermediate Ti film can be defeated by commonly used in situ target and substrate sputter cleaning procedures which result in Ag under the Ti. Auger electron spectroscopy and wear testing of the coatings are used to develop a cleaning strategy resulting in an adherent film system.

HEAO 3 limits on the Ti-44 yield in Galactic supernovae

Data fron the high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment on HEAO 3 have been searched for line emission from the decay of Ti-44 created in recent, as yet unobserved, Galactic supernova explosions, where the ages and locations are unknown. Because the 78 yr mean life of Ti-44 is comparable to the average time between Galactic supernovae, the gamma-ray line emission from its decay should appear as Galactic point sources. No evidence was found for such emission from a point source anywhere in the Galactic plane, with a 1-sigma limit of 8.3 x 10 exp -5 photons/sq cm per sec. Detailed models were developed to simulate the Galactic gamma-ray emission from the decay of Ti-44 produced in both type I and type II supernovae. These models were used with the measured gamma-ray line limits to constrain the supernova yields and recurrence periods.

Chronology and genesis of high-Ti mare volcanism: Melting of cogenetic depleted and enriched reservoirs

An understanding of the chronology and petrogenesis of volcanic rocks is paramount to unravelling the complexities of the composition and structure of the mantle of the Moon. High-Ti mare basalts represent the best-sampled suite of lunar volcanic rocks and likely represent melts of the uppermost mantle of the Moon. Compiled Nd and Sr isotopic data for high-Ti basalts, combined with weighted average ages determiend by various techniques, yield a complex melting history for the high-Ti mantle source. Melting occurred during three distinct episodes (3.84 Ga, 3.75-3.69 Ga, and 3.56 Ga) separated by hiatuses of 100 Ma or more. The first episode included the melting of a relatively trapped liquid (KREEPy)-rich source beneath the A-11 landing site. Later melting of this source produced magmas which were relatively trapped liquid-free at the A-11 site. Synchronous melting at the A-17 landing site produced magmas with variable proportions of this evolved trapped liquid component. The final phase of volcanism occurred at the A-11 site and involved the assimilation of an evolved 'neuKREEP' component. Continued melting of a similar source, which was nearly exhausted of its ilmenite component, beneath the A-12 landing site may have lead to production of magmas parental to the A-12 ilmenite basalts.

Origin of high-Ti lunar ultramafic glasses

A series of high pressure melting experiments were performed on a synthetic analog of the Apollo 14 Black Glass. At 15 kb and 1400 C, olivine is the liquidus phase. At 25 kb and 1450 C, orthopyroxene and Cr-spinel crystallize. A multiple saturation point with olivine + orthopyroxene + spinel on the liquidus occurs at 20 kb and 1440 C. It was proposed that the high-Ti ultramafic glass evolved from a low-Ti Green Glass generated deep in the lunar interior that assimilated shallow-level, late stage cumulates of magma ocean differentiation. Heat for assimilation is provided by superheat of the low-Ti magma and melts high-Ca pyroxene and ilmenite cumulates at a depth of 100 km. This model is a variant of that proposed by Hubbard and Minear and rejected by Ringwood and Kesson.

Occurrence and possible significance of rare Ti oxides (Magneli phases) in carbonaceous chondrite matrices

Rare, ultrafine-grained Ti oxides (Ti3O5 and the Magneli phases, Ti5O9 and Ti8O15) have been identified by TEM in the CM2 carbonaceous chondrite, Bells, and a carbonaceous chondrite matrix clast from the Nilpena polymict ureilite. In both meteorites the Ti oxides occur in the matrix as isolated grains and clusters of two or more grains. They are euhedral in shape and have grain sizes of 0.05-0.3 micron. Magneli phases have been recently shown to be a common component in some interplanetary dust particles, but this is the first reported occurrence in a meteorite. The morphological properties and grain size of the Ti oxides are consistent with formation by vapor phase condensation either within the solar nebula or possibly in a presolar environment.

Mg and Ti isotopes in presolar Al2O3

Oxygen isotopic compositions and initial Al-26/Al-27 ratios were reported for two presolar Al2O3 grains, Orgueil B and Bishunpur B39. In Orgueil B, O-17/O-16 is about twice the solar value but O-18/O-16 is normal. In B39, O-17/O-16 is approximately 7x higher than solar and O-18/O-16 is 0.6x the solar value. Spectroscopic observations of red giant stars show similar O compositions, which result when material that has experienced partial H burning is mixed into the stellar envelope by the first dredge-up. The O-17/O-16 ratios indicate that Orgueil B originated around a star of approximately 1.5 solar mass, while B39 formed around either a approximately 2 solar mass or 4-7 solar mass star. Both grains formed with Al-26/Al-27 ratios of approximately 10(exp -3). Aluminum-26 is produced in the H shell after core H burning has ceased and first dredge-up has occurred. It is spread through the envelope by the third dredge-up, which occurs in low- and intermediate-mass stars as a series of mixing events driven by thermal pulses in the He shell. In intermediate-mass stars (3-8 solar mass), Al-26 can also be brought to the surface by the second dredge-up, which occurs at the end of core He burning. We have measured Ti isotopes by ion probe in Orgueil B and Bishunpur B39, looking for evidence of He-shell nucleosynthesis. Stars of approximately 1.5 solar mass do not experience second dredge-up, so the Al-26 in Orgueil B must have been mixed outward during third dredge-up, which also supplies He-shell material to the envelope. The size of the isotopic shifts in Ti and Mg suggest that Orgueil B contains approximately 5-10x more material from the He-shell than from the H-shell. In contrast, the lack of measurable Mg and Ti anomalies in B39 imply little or no He-shell contribution. This indicates that Al-26 in B39 was supplied by second dredge-up prior to He-shell ignition and points to a parent star of 4-7 solar mass.

A Compact Ti:Sapphire Laser With its Third Harmonic Generation (THG) for an Airborne Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) Transmitter

A compact and high-pulse-energy Ti:Sapphire laser with its Third Harmonic Generation (THG) has been developed for an airborne ozone differential absorption lidar (DIAL) to study the distributions and concentrations of the ozone throughout the troposphere. The Ti:Sapphire laser, pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser and seeded by a single mode diode laser, is operated either at 867 nm or at 900 nm with a pulse repetition frequency of 20 Hz. High energy laser pulses (more than 110 mJ/pulse) at 867 nm or 900 nm with a desired beam quality have been achieved and utilized to generate its third harmonic at 289nm or 300nm, which are on-line and off-line wavelengths of an airborne ozone DIAL. After being experimentally compared with Beta-Barium Borate (beta - BaB2O4 or BBO) nonlinear crystals, two Lithium Triborate (LBO) crystals (5 x 5 x 20 cu mm) are selected for the Third Harmonic Generation (THG). In this paper, we report the Ti:Sapphire laser at 900 nm and its third harmonic at 300 nm. The desired high ultraviolet (UV) output pulse energy is more than 30 mJ at 300 nm and the energy conversion efficiency from 900 nm to 300 nm is 30%.
