Thermodynamic properties of Ca–Pb electrodes determined by electromotive force measurements

Thermodynamic properties of Ca–Pb alloys are investigated by electromotive force (emf) measurements to determine equilibrium cell potentials and phase properties for their application in energy storage systems such as liquid metal batteries. Using the electrochemical cell Ca(s) | CaF 2 (s) | Ca(in Pb) at 700–1060 K, cell emf is measured for thirteen Ca–Pb alloys at mole fractions, x Ca = 0.06–0.80. At 873 K, the equilibrium potentials of liquid Ca–Pb alloys are 0.57–0.62 V versus Ca and the activity values are as low as a Ca = 6.2 × 10 -8 at x Ca = 0.06. In addition, the emf values as a function of temperature provide partial molar quantities (entropy and enthalpy) as well as phase transitions which are corroborated by determining transition temperatures and phase constituents using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). This study establishes the fundamental data necessary for the design of Pb-containing liquid metal electrodes through the integration of electrochemical, thermal, and structural properties of Ca–Pb electrodes.

Calculation of the thermodynamic properties of a mixture of gases as a function of temperature and pressure

The evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of a gas mixture can be performed using a generalized correlation which makes use of the second virial coefficient. This coefficient is based on statistical mechanics and is a function of temperature and composition, but not of pressure. The method provides results accurate to within 3 percent for gases which are nonpolar or only slightly polar. When applied to highly polar gases, errors of 5 to 10 percent may result. For gases which associate, even larger errors are possible. The sequences of calculations can be routinely programmed for a digital computer. The thermodynamic properties of a mixture of neon, argon and ethane were calculated by such a program. The result will be used for the design of the gas replenishment system for the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope.

Thermodynamic properties of nitrogen gas from sound velocity measurements

Thermodynamic properties of nitrogen gas have been calculated from 80 K to 350 K and at pressures to 10 bar from sound velocity measurements and existing P-V-T data using multiproperty fitting techniques. These new data are intended to improve existing predictive capability of the equation of state in the low density region needed for use with the NASA-Langley National Transonics Facility.

Thermodynamic properties and theoretical rocket performance of hydrogen to 100,000 K and 1.01325 x 10 to the 8th power N/sq m

The composition and thermodynamic properties were calculated for 100 to 110,000 K and 1.01325 x 10 to the 2nd power to 1.01325 x 10 to the 8th power N/sq m for chemical equilibrium in the Debye-Huckel and ideal-gas approximations. Quantities obtained were the concentrations of hydrogen atoms, protons, free electrons, hydrogen molecules, negative hydrogen ions, hydrogen diatomic molecular ions, and hydrogen triatomic molecular ions, and the enthalpy, entropy, average molecular weight, specific heat at constant pressure, density, and isentropic exponent. Electronically excited states of H and H2 were included. Choked, isentropic, one-dimensional nozzle flow with shifting chemical equilibrium was calculated to the Debye-Huckel and ideal-gas approximations for stagnation temperatures from 2500 to 100,000 K. The mass flow per unit throat area and the sonic flow factor were obtained. The pressure ratio, temperature, velocity, and ideal and vacuum specific impulses at the throat and for pressure ratios as low as 0.000001 downstream were found. For high temperatures at pressures approaching 1.01325 x 10 to the 8th power N/sq m, the ideal-gas approximation was found to be inadequate for calculations of composition, precise thermodynamic properties, and precise nozzle flow. The greatest discrepancy in nozzle flow occurred in the exit temperature, which was as much as 21 percent higher when the Debye-Huckel approximation was used.

Elastic and thermodynamic properties of cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnets

Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnets (Y 3-x Ce x Al 5 O 12 , Ce:YAGs) are promising yellow light-emitting components of solid-state white light-emitting diodes. Although there have been numerous studies examining the effects of Ce concentrations on the luminescent properties of Y 3-x Ce x Al 5 O 12 , the impacts of Ce dopant on the elastic and thermodynamic properties are not well understood. In this work, we used resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) to determine the effects of Ce doping (0.025, 0.1, 1 at. %) on the elastic and thermodynamic properties of Y 3-x Ce x Al 5 O 12 . The elastic moduli calculated via the Voigt–Reuss–Hill (VRH) method demonstrated that low Ce dopant concentrations (≤0.1 at. %) induced negligible effects on the elasticity of the YAG host matrix, while a high Ce concentration (1 at. %) yielded significant softening. RUS spectral analysis and SEM images suggested that the elastic softening originated from microstructural differences induced at higher Ce dopant concentrations. Additionally, we demonstrated an increase in elastic anisotropy at higher Ce concentrations, which further elucidated the correlations between structure and elasticity of Y 3-x Ce x Al 5 O 12 . Debye temperatures ($θ_D$), heat capacities ($C_p$), and thermal conductivities ($\mathit{κ}$) were calculated for Ce:YAGs through the relations of RUS-derived parameters (sound velocities, elastic moduli) and previously determined thermal expansion coefficients. Ce:YAG was found to have a significant reduction in $θ_D$, Cp, and $\mathit{κ}$ at Ce concentrations ≥1 at. %. Lastly, extrapolation of $C_p$ and $\mathit{κ}$ to higher temperatures allowed the modeling of thermal stress experienced by Y 3-x Ce x Al 5 O 12 disks up to 1073.15 K.

THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF SRF NIOBIUM

Bulk and thin films of niobium are the materials of choice in fabricating superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities for modern particle accelerators and quantum computing applications. The thermodynamic properties of Nb are of particular interest in heat management in cryogenic environments. Here, we report the results of measurements of the thermodynamic properties of niobium used in the fabrication of SRF cavities. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and specific heat capacity was measured on bulk niobium samples.

Thermodynamic properties of the heliospheric plasma

A global-scale study is conducted of the radial evolution of the solar wind's temperature (T), number density (n), and entropy (s) thermodynamic properties, on the basis of plasma data from such sources as IMP and ISEE 3, in conjunction with an MHD simulation model. The radial evolution of T and s indicates that the heliospheric plasma is subjected to a heating process; this heating is interpreted to be largely due to the cumulative effect of the shock process with increasing distance from the sun. This simulation model is also used to extrapolate the thermodynamic properties of the solar wind from Voyager 2 to the region of the outer heliosphere that is bounded by the termination shock.
