Flow Sensor Test Article (F-STAr) (Design and Fabrication Status Report)

The Flow Sensor Test Article (F-STAr) is a test article currently under construction for the Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop (METL). F-STAr was designed to provide high sodium flowrate capabilities for sensor calibration, component testing, and fluid studies. Figure 1 shows two solid model views of the new test article. F-STAr includes a high-capacity pump that can provide a nominal flowrate of 120 GPM; a test section support structure that can accommodate a wide array of sub-test articles and their instrumentation; and finally, a heating and cooling system to aid in controlling the testing environment. Initially, F-STAr will be configured to test liquid metal flow sensors, specifically field shift sensors like the Eddy Current Flow Sensors (ECFS) based on the RDT C4-7T standard. To test these sensors, two test sections were designed that attempt to model Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) outlet conditions. Figure 2 shows models of the “Full-Scaled Test Section” (FSTS) that represents a generic SFR fuel handling socket and a “Pseudo-Scaled Test Section” (PSTS) that represents a generic array of scaled fuel handling sockets. While F-STAr will be configured to test ECFS’s, it can also be outfitted to meet other experimental needs. For example, F-STAr could be setup with a test section that includes a fluidic diode or a component test investigating the performance of hydrodynamic bearings. Other test sections include studies of sodium thermal hydraulics like thermal striping. Overall, F-STAr is a flexible test article designed to accommodate many needs. This report will provide a status update on the design and construction of F-STAr. Manufacturing of all components has commenced, and several components have already been completed. These components include the pump and test section assembly stand. Other components, such as the heater, have been completed but were rejected due to the vendor not meeting the requirements of the purchase order. Lastly, the submersible flowmeter and main flange components are under construction, and their status will be reviewed in this report. Overall, most of the F-STAr components and parts will be completed by the end of September 2022.

Task 12 PV Sustainability - Status of PV Module Recycling in Selected IEA PVPS Task 12 Countries

Photovoltaic (PV) deployment has accelerated in recent years compared to projections in the early 2010s. This means that PV end of life (EOL) waste streams will also increase at a higher pace than anticipated. To meet and optimise PV EOL management, appropriate regulatory and technological approaches must be implemented in the near term, ensuring that available options are adapted to the conditions of each country or region. This report aims to review the current regulatory and industrial landscape for selected countries belonging to the International Energy Agency's PV Power Systems technology collaboration programme, to assess status of PV EOL management, allow for comparison and cross-fertilization, and establish a foundation for future tracking of progress. Although volumes of EOL PV modules are still small, EOL PV is treated and recycled in a proper manner in the countries and regions that have EOL regulations in place. However, the current low volumes, limited available recycling technologies, logistics challenges, and undeveloped markets for recovered materials result in a high-cost, low-revenue scenario for PV module recycling globally. Nevertheless, the implementation of PV EOL regulations in more countries and R&D investment in PV recycling is expected to accelerate further improvements to meet future demand and to achieve high-value, low-cost recycling. We hope this report contributes to understanding the global status of PV recycling and to accelerating its development as a promising option for the proper EOL management of PV modules in the coming decades.

SBND Detector Status and First Results

The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is one of three liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detectors positioned along the axis of the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab, and serves as the near detector in the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. The detector just completed its second year of running, collecting over 6.5e20 POT, equivalent to an unprecedented sample of over 5 million neutrino interactions. Initial data has demonstrated superb performance of the detector’s subsystems, enabling precise tracking and calorimetric reconstruction of events. With this large statistical data set, SBND is performing multi-dimensional cross section measurements of inclusive and exclusive topologies and precise searches for beyond the Standard Model (BSM) processes. As the near detector in the SBN Program, it will enable the full potential of the joint sterile neutrino measurements program by precisely characterizing the unoscillated neutrino beam, constraining BNB flux and neutrino-argon cross-section systematic uncertainties. In this talk, the current status of the experiment, first results from SBND’s neutrino interaction program, as well as status and prospects for BSM and oscillation searches are discussed.

Feed status and skin injury modulate immunopathology, global gene expression, and survival in channel catfish during virulent Aeromonas hydrophila infection

Introduction VirulentAeromonas hydrophilais a major pathogen in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), that causes motileAeromonassepticemia and significant economic losses. We investigated the effect of feeding status and skin integrity on the host immune response, disease survival, and gastrointestinal pathology following a vAh challenge. Methods Using a bath immersion model, channel catfish were divided into four treatment groups: fin clipped and fed (FCF), fin clipped but not fed (FCN), not fin clipped but fed (NCF), and not fin clipped nor fed (NCN) alongside non-challenged control groups The FCF and NCF groups were fed 2 h prior to the challenge, but the FCN and NCN groups were not. Survival analysis, histopathological assessment, and RNA sequencing were conducted across groups at different time intervals throughout the vAh challenge. Results Survival rates were lowest in the FCF and FCN groups (30% and 23% survival, respectively), suggesting that both feeding and skin damage contributed to disease severity. Histopathological analyses revealed more severe intestinal and gastric lesions in fed groups, characterized by epithelial necrosis, hemorrhage, and edema. Transcriptomic analysis among the groups identified significant differentially expressed genes associated with inflammation, apoptosis, and metabolic stress, with notable upregulation of interleukin 1-beta (il-1β), and complement C3 (c3). Gene ontology enrichment highlighted distinct immune activation patterns between fed and unfed groups, with enhanced pathogen recognition and pro-inflammatory responses in unfed fish. Discussion These findings suggest feeding prior to infection may exacerbate disease pathology, potentially by creating a physiological state conducive to facilitate pathogen proliferation and dampened early immune responses, whereas short-term fasting appears to promote early immune activation. This study provides novel insights into the complex interplay between feed status, physical injury, and immune response to vAh infection.

Status of CHIP-TRAP: The Central Michigan University High-Precision Penning Trap

Precise and accurate atomic mass data provide crucial information for applications in a wide range of fields in physics and beyond, including astrophysics, nuclear structure, particle and neutrino physics, fundamental symmetries, chemistry, and metrology. The most precise atomic mass measurements are performed on charged particles confined in a Penning trap. Here, we describe the development, status, and outlook of CHIP-TRAP: the Central Michigan University high-precision Penning trap. CHIP-TRAP aims to perform ultra-high precision (~1 part in 10 11 fractional precision) mass measurements on stable and long-lived isotopes produced with external ion sources and transported to the Penning traps. Along the way, ions of a particular m/q are selected with a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass separator (MR-TOF-MS), with further filtering performed in a cylindrical capture trap before the ions are transported to a pair of hyperbolic measurement traps. In this paper, we report on the design and status of CHIP-TRAP and present results from the commissioning of the ion sources, MR-TOF-MS, and capture trap. We also provide an outlook on the continued development and commissioning of CHIP-TRAP.

State-Specific Prevalence of Inactivity, Self-Rated Health Status, and Severe Joint Pain Among Adults With Arthritis — United States, 2019

Arthritis is associated with joint pain, disability, and physical inactivity, potentially resulting in poor quality of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data to estimate state-specific arthritis prevalence and, among adults with arthritis, the prevalence of physical inactivity, fair/poor self-rated health status, and severe joint pain. Among adults with arthritis, age-standardized prevalences of physical inactivity, fair/poor health status, and severe joint pain were high in all states and highest in southeastern states. Increased promotion and use of evidence-based public health interventions for arthritis may improve health-promoting behaviors and health outcomes among adults with arthritis.
