Temporal covariation of island arc Sr isotopes and seawater chemistry over the past 2 billion years

The chemical compositions of island arc basalts (IAB) reflect contributions from the mantle as well as fluids and melts from the subducting slab. Addition of radiogenic seawater Sr to oceanic crust through hydrothermal alteration and subsequent subduction is often invoked to explain elevated 87 Sr/ 86 Sr signatures in modern IAB. However, changes in the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr of island arc magmatic rocks through time has not been investigated, limiting our understanding of the factors influencing the Sr budgets of arcs throughout Earth’s history. To address this, we compiled 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values from island arc magmatic rocks ranging in age from modern to Paleoproterozoic, only including data from island arc localities that best preserve initial magmatic 87 Sr/ 86 Sr. Median initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values are consistently elevated compared to depleted mantle 87 Sr/ 86 Sr over this period, indicating persistent enrichment in radiogenic Sr in island arcs. Moreover, the elevation in island arc 87 Sr/ 86 Sr relative to the depleted mantle is variable. A notable rise in island arc 87 Sr/ 86 Sr during the late Neoproterozoic coincides with a steep increase in seawater 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and Sr concentration. To investigate this potential connectivity, we modeled the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr of island arc magmas between 0 and 830 Ma with inputs of depleted mantle 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, seawater 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, and seawater Sr concentration. The model reproduces the overall trajectory of the compiled data. We interpret the observed temporal variation in island arc 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values and its close association with fluctuations in seawater chemistry as evidence that changes in marine geochemistry have strongly influenced the Sr isotopic record of island arc magmas over time.

The combined effects of Mg 2+ and Sr 2+ incorporation during CaCO 3 precipitation and crystal growth

Calcite (CaCO 3 ) composition and properties are defined by the chemical environment in which CaCO 3 forms. However, a complete understanding of the relationship between aqueous chemistry during calcite precipitation and resulting chemical and physical CaCO 3 properties remains elusive; therefore, we present an investigation into the coupled effects of divalent cations Sr 2+ and Mg 2+ on CaCO 3 precipitation and subsequent crystal growth. Through chemical analysis of the aqueous phases and microscopy of the resulting calcite phases in compliment with density functional theory calculations, we elucidate the relationship between crystal growth and the resulting composition (elemental and isotopic) of calcite. The results of this experimental and modeling work suggest that Mg 2+ and Sr 2+ have cation-specific impacts that inhibit calcite crystal growth, including: (1) Sr 2+ incorporates more readily into calcite than Mg 2+ (D Sr > D Mg ), and increasing [Sr 2+ ] t or [Mg 2+ ] t increases D Sr ; (2) the inclusion of Mg 2+ into structure leads to a reduction in the calcite unit cell volume, whereas Sr 2+ leads to an expansion; (3) the inclusion of both Mg 2+ and Sr 2+ results in a distribution of unit cell impacts based on the relative positions of the Sr 2+ and Mg 2+ in the lattice. These experiments were conducted at saturation indices of CaCO 3 of ~4.1, favoring rapid precipitation. This rapid precipitation resulted in observed Sr isotope fractionation confirming Sr isotopic fractionation is dependent upon the precipitation rate. We further note that the precipitation and growth of calcite favors the incorporation of the lighter 86 Sr isotope over the heavier 87 Sr isotope, regardless of the initial solution conditions, and the degree of fractionation increases with D Sr . In sum, these results demonstrate the impact of solution environment to influence the incorporation behavior and crystal growth behavior of calcite. These factors are important to understand in order to effectively use geochemical signatures resulting from calcite precipitation or dissolution to gain specific information.

Noise of the 10-bladed, 40 deg swept SR-6 propeller in a wind tunnel

The noise generated by supersonic helical-tip-speed propellers is a likely cabin environment problem for future airplanes powered by these propellers. Three propeller models with different tip sweeps. SR-1M, SR-2, and SR-3, designed for 244 m/sec (800 ft/sec) tip speed at a flight Mach number of 0.8 were previously tested in the NASA Lewis 8- by 6-Foot Wind Tunnel. In order to investigated another design point condition, the SR-6 propeller was designed for 213 m-sec (700 ft/sec) tip speed at a flight Mach number of 0.8. The noise data from this propeller are reported herein. Curves of blade passing frequency noise versus tip Mach number (at constant advance ratio) showed that the SR-6 propeller behaved similarly to the SR-1M propeller. The noise of the SR-6 propeller at its design condition, helical tip Mach number of 1.07, is approximately 3 dB quieter than the SR-2 propeller at its higher design helical tip Mach number of 1.15, but about 2.5 dB noisier than SR-3 at its design condition. The helical tip Mach number shift of the steep noise rise followed the same progression as the blade sweep angle for all of the propellers. When operated at the SR-3 design point, the SR-6 propeller was approximately 1.5 dB quieter than SR-2 and 4 dB noisier than SR-3.
