Persistence of deuterium and tritium nuclear spin-polarization in presence of high-frequency plasma waves

We present first-principles numerical calculations of the depolarization rate of spin-polarized deuterium and tritium nuclei in realistic tokamak plasmas, driven by resonant interactions with plasma waves. Backed up by first-of-a-kind linear and nonlinear simulations, we find that alpha particle-driven Alfvénic modes cause only negligible depolarization, which is contrary to expectations in prior literature. Other Alfvénic instabilities can in principle degrade polarization, but only under conditions unlikely to be realized on transport timescales. By combining full-orbit particle tracing with a dedicated depolarization solver, we demonstrate that wave-driven depolarization is surprisingly weak in SPARC and ITER-scale devices. These results provide strong evidence that spin-polarized fuel can maintain its polarization long enough to boost fusion reactivity, opening a viable path toward substantially enhanced performance in magnetic confinement fusion power plants.

Spin-Polarized Electron Sources Based on Group II-VI Compounds Grown by Atomic Layer Deposition

This project explored ALD as an alternative growth technique for II–VI photocathodes and assessed CdTe for spin-polarized electron production. Working with BNL (Cultrera group), we established the workflow to measure QE and spin polarization using BNL’s Mott polarimeter, and we prepared both conventional Cs/O NEA activation and a heterostructure NEA route leveraging an ultrathin Cs2Te overlayer. The latter provides a pragmatic activation alternative while maintaining photoexcitation primarily in CdTe.

Emergence of the spin polarized domains in the kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite (Zn 0.95 Cu 0.05 )Cu 3 (OD) 6 FBr

Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are known to be highly sensitive to perturbations caused by the structural disorder. NMR is a local probe ideally suited for investigating such disorder-induced effects, but in practice, large distributions in the conventional one-dimensional NMR data make it difficult to distinguish the intrinsic behavior expected for pristine kagome quantum spin liquids from disorder-induced effects. Here we report the development of a two-dimensional NMR data acquisition scheme applied to Zn-barlowite (Zn 0.95 Cu 0.05 )Cu 3 (OD) 6 FBr kagome lattice, and successfully correlate the distribution of the low energy spin excitations with that of the local spin susceptibility. We present evidence for the gradual growth of domains with a local spin polarization induced by 5% Cu 2+ defect spins occupying the interlayer non-magnetic Zn 2+ sites. These spin-polarized domains account for ~60% of the sample volume at 2 K, where gapless excitations induced by interlayer defects dominate the low-energy sector of spin excitations within the kagome planes.

Spin-polarized imaging of strongly interacting fermions in the ferrimagnetic state of the Weyl candidate CeBi

CeBi has an intricate magnetic phase diagram whose fully polarized state has recently been suggested as a Weyl semimetal, though the role of f states in promoting strong interactions has remained elusive. Here we focus on the less-studied but also time-reversal symmetry-breaking ferrimagnetic phase of CeBi, where our density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict additional Weyl nodes near the Fermi level E F . We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to image the surface ferrimagnetic order on the itinerant Bi p states, indicating their orbital hybridization with localized Ce f states. We observe suppression of this spin-polarized signature at E F , coincident with a Fano line shape in the conductance spectra, suggesting the Bi p states partially Kondo screen the f magnetic moments, and this p – f hybridization causes strong Fermi-level band renormalization. Furthermore, the p-band flattening is supported by our quasiparticle interference measurements, which also show band splitting in agreement with DFT, painting a consistent picture of a strongly interacting magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target. II. Deuteron and spectator nucleon tagging

We develop the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target and apply it to scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging. In Part I (previous article), we present the general form of the semi-inclusive cross section and polarization observables for the spin-1 target. In Part II (this article), we consider deep-inelastic scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging as a special case of target fragmentation. Methods of light-front quantization are employed to separate nuclear and hadronic structure in the high-energy process and achieve a composite description. The light-front wave function of the polarized deuteron is obtained from a rotationally covariant three-dimensional wave function in the center-of-mass frame of the proton-neutron system. The tagged structure functions are computed in the impulse approximation. The momentum and spin distribution of the active nucleon are controlled by the deuteron polarization and the detected spectator momentum (𝐷/𝑆 wave ratio). The cross section and spin asymmetries are evaluated for general deuteron polarization (vector and tensor, longitudinal and transverse) as functions of the spectator momentum. Tensor-polarized spin asymmetries of order unity are achieved for spectator momenta of approximately 300 MeV, which select configurations with a large 𝐷 wave. Sum rules for the tagged spin structure functions are derived. The results can be used for simulations of spectator tagging in future polarized fixed-target experiments (Jefferson Lab) or at the Electron-Ion Collider.

Excited State Exchange Control of Photoinduced Electron Spin Polarization in Electronic Ground States

Ground-state electron spin polarization (ESP) is generated in radical elaborated (bpy)Pt(CAT-NN) and (bpy)Pt(CAT- p -Me 2 PhMe 2 -NN) (bpy = 5,5'-di- tert -butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, CAT = 3- tert -butylcatecholate, p -Ph = para -phenylene, NN = nitronylnitroxide). Photoexcitation produces an exchange-coupled, three-spin, charge-separated doublet 2 S 1 (S = chromophore excited spin singlet configuration) excited state that rapidly decays to a 2 T 1 (T = chromophore excited spin triplet configuration) excited state. The SQ-bridge-NN bond torsions affect the magnitude of the excited state exchange interaction ( J SQ-NN ), which determines the 2 T 1 – 4 T 1 energy gap. Ground state ESP is dependent on the magnitude of J SQ-NN , and we postulate that this results from differences in 2 T 1 and 4 T 1 state mixing. Mechanisms that lead to the rapid transfer of the excited state ESP to the ground state are discussed. Although subnanosecond 2 T 1 state lifetimes are measured optically in solution, the ground state ESP decays very slowly at 20 K and is observable for more than a millisecond.

Electron Spin Polarization and Rectification Driven by Chiral Perylene Diimide-Based Nanodonuts

The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect allows thin-film layers of chiral conjugated molecules to function as spin filters at ambient temperature. Through solvent-modulated dropcasting of chiral l- and d-perylene diimide (PDI) monomeric building blocks, two types of aggregate morphologies, nanofibers and nanodonuts, may be realized. Spin-diode behavior is evidenced in the nanodonut structures. Stacked PDI units, which form the conjugated core of these nanostructures, dominate the nanodonut–Au electrode contact; in contrast, the AFM tip contacts largely the high-resistance solubilizing alkyl chains of the chiral monomers that form these nanodonuts. Current–voltage responses of the nanodonuts, measured by magnetic conductive AFM (mC-AFM), demonstrate substantial spin polarizations as well as spin current rectification ratios (>10) that exceed the magnitudes of those determined to date for other chiral nanoscale systems. Furthermore, these results underscore the potential for chiral nanostructures, featuring asymmetric molecular junctions, to enable CISS-based nanoscale spin current rectifiers.

Laser-induced-fluorescence imaging of a spin-polarized ultracold neutral plasma in a magnetic field

In this work, we report Doppler-sensitive laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) imaging of an ultracold neutral plasma in a magnetic field. Local values of ion density, hydrodynamic fluid velocity, temperature, and spin polarization are obtained using a fluorescence model based on velocity-resolved rate equations (REs) including the transfer of ions between states due to laser coupling and spontaneous emission. The RE approach captures optical pumping of ions into states that are not driven by the LIF excitation laser, and this is validated with experimental data. Combined molecular-dynamics and quantum-trajectories simulations verify that velocity-changing collisions have a negligible impact on the state population evolution for typical experimental conditions. Relative intensities of Zeeman components of the LIF spectra provide clear evidence that the ions are electron-spin-polarized when created by photoionization of magnetically trapped 88 Sr atoms. This probe opens many possibilities for studying thermal transport and the equilibration of neutral plasmas in overlapping regimes of strong coupling and magnetization.

Anomalous spin polarization from turbulent color fields

Here we study the important, yet widely overlooked, role of gluons for spin transport with a connection to local parity violation in quark gluon plasmas. We employ the formalism of quantum kinetic theory to quarks in weakly coupled quantum chromodynamics to derive the source terms for quark spin polarization. These source terms involve parity-odd correlators of dynamically generated color fields in near-equilibrium quark gluon plasmas and give rise to locally fluctuating axial charge currents. Our results provide a possible explanation for the spin alignment of vector mesons measured in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Reversal of spin-polarization near the Fermi level of the Rashba semiconductor BiTeCl

Abstract Spin–orbit coupling forms the physical basis for quantum materials with non-trivial topology and potential spintronics applications. The Rashba interaction is a textbook model of spin–orbit interactions, with charge carriers undergoing linear, isotropic spin-splitting in momentum space. Recently, non-centrosymmetric semiconductors in the family BiTe X ( X = Cl, Br, I) have been identified as exemplary Rashba materials due to the strong splitting of their bulk bands, yet a detailed investigation of their spin textures, and their relationships to local crystal symmetry, is currently lacking. We perform high-efficiency spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly image the spin texture of surface states of BiTeCl, and we find dramatic deviations from idealized behavior, including a reversal of the spin-polarization near the Fermi level. We show that this behavior can be described by higher-order contributions to the canonical Rashba model with the surface states localized to individual trilayers of the crystal. Due to the prominence of these effects near the Fermi level, they should have a strong impact on the spin-dependent transport of carriers.

Spin-polarized imaging of the antiferromagnetic structure and field-tunable bound states in kagome magnet FeSn

Abstract Kagome metals are an exciting playground for the explorations of novel phenomena at the intersection of topology, electron correlations and magnetism. The family of FeSn-based kagome magnets in particular attracted a lot of attention for simplicity of the layered crystal structure and tunable topological electronic band structure. Despite a significant progress in understanding their bulk properties, surface electronic and magnetic structures are yet to be fully explored in many of these systems. In this work, we focus on a prototypical kagome metal FeSn. Using a combination of spin-averaged and spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we provide the first atomic-scale visualization of the layered antiferromagnetic structure at the surface of FeSn. In contrast to the field-tunable electronic structure of cousin material Fe 3 Sn 2 that is a ferromagnet, we find that electronic density-of-states of FeSn is robust to the application of external magnetic field. Interestingly, despite the field insensitive electronic band structure, FeSn exhibits bound states tied to specific impurities with large effective moments that strongly couple to the magnetic field. Our experiments provide microscopic insights necessary for theoretical modeling of FeSn and serve as a spring board for spin-polarized measurements of topological magnets in general.

Metal Ion Control of Photoinduced Electron Spin Polarization in Electronic Ground States

The sign and intensity of photoinduced electron spin polarization (ESP) in the electronic ground doublet states ( 2 S o /D o ) of chromophore-radical complexes can be controlled by changing the nature of the metal ion. The complexes consist of an organic radical (nitronylnitroxide, NN) covalently attached to a donor acceptor chromophore via a meta-phenylene bridge, (bpy)M(CAT-m-Ph-NN) (1) (bpy = 4,4’-di-tert-butyl-2,2’-bipyridine, M = Pd II (1-Pd) or Pt II (1-Pt), CAT = 3-tert-butylcatecholate, m-Ph = meta-phenylene). In both complexes, photoexcitation with visible light pro-duces an initial exchange-coupled, 3-spin (bpy •- , CAT +• = semiquinone (SQ) and NN • ), charge-separated doublet 2 S 1 (S = chromophore excited spin singlet configuration) excited state that rapidly decays to the ground state via a 2 T 1 (T = chromophore excited spin triplet configuration) state. This process is not expected to be spin selective and only very weak emissive ESP is found for 1-Pd. In contrast, strong absorptive ESP is generated in 1-Pt. Furthermore, it is postulated that zero-field splitting induced transitions between the chromophoric 2 T 1 and 4 T 1 states (1-Pd and 1-Pt) and spin-orbit induced transitions between 2 T 1 and NN-based quartet states (1-Pt) ac-count for the differences in polarization.

Single layer graphene protective layer on GaAs photocathodes for spin-polarized electron source

GaAs-based photocathodes are the primary choice for polarized electron sources, commonly used in polarized electron microscopes and polarized positron sources. GaAs photocathodes are typically activated with cesium and oxygen, which are highly reactive and require an ultra-high vacuum (~ 10 -11 Torr or lower) to operate reliably, resulting in substantial operational difficulties. A short exposure to a mediocre vacuum results in an instantaneous loss of cathode quantum efficiency (QE) due to the chemical reaction of the active layer with residual gas molecules or back-bombardment ions during operation. Covering the GaAs cathode with a 2D material, such as monolayer graphene, could provide protection against such damage due to the inhibition of chemical reactions with residual gas molecules. In this paper, we have incorporated a method known as intercalation to pass the active material underneath the graphene and activate the superlattice GaAs/GaAsP (SL-GaAs) photocathode. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low-energy electron microscopy, and Mott scattering measurements were performed to evaluate the formation of the photocathode under graphene, as well as its spectral response and electron spin polarization. Our results demonstrate that the successful activation of the SL-GaAs photocathode with a graphene protection layer is achieved with a moderate QE. Furthermore, we found that the electron spin polarization of the cathode with a surface protection layer is higher than the conventional cathode without a protection layer.

Layer Number Dependence of Chirality and Spin Polarized Lifetime in Chiral 2D Halide Perovskites

Chiral metal halide perovskite semiconductors (CMHS) are fascinating semiconductors with unique chiroptical properties and spin-polarized charge transport. Achieving long spin lifetimes and high carrier mobility concurrently is essential to realize the true potential of CMHS in manipulating charge, spin, and light. While conventional monolayer n = 1 CMHS possess appreciable anisotropy factors of circular dichroism (g CD ) and photoluminescence (g lum ), imparting chirality to quasi-2D CMHS (n > 1) with enhanced carrier mobilities is underexplored. Herein, we systematically investigate the layer number (n-value) dependence and emergent trade-offs in chiroptical properties, spin-relaxation times, and carrier mobilities in chiral quasi-2D (R/S-MPEA) 2 MA n-1 Pb n I 3n+1 single crystals and thin films (R/S-MPEA: R/S-β-methylphenylethylammonium; MA: methylammonium; n = 1–3). Films with n = 2 exhibited the highest g CD of 8 × 10 –3 , an order of magnitude larger than their n = 1 and n = 3 counterparts. On the other hand, n = 3 films demonstrated enhanced spin lifetimes up to 15 ps along with increased carrier mobility up to 11.6 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . As a result, photodiode-type photodetectors based on n = 3 CMHS reveal high specific detectivity and superior discrimination of circularly polarized light, outperforming n = 1 and 2. These findings highlight the potential of quasi-2D CMHS as tunable, high-performance platforms with longer spin lifetime and diffusion length, enabling new functionalities.

Isospin magnetism and spin-polarized superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene

In conventional superconductors, Cooper pairing occurs between electrons of opposite spin. We observe spin-polarized superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene when doped to a saddle-point van Hove singularity generated by a large applied perpendicular electric field. We observe a cascade of electrostatic gate-tuned transitions between electronic phases distinguished by their polarization within the isospin space defined by the combination of the spin and momentum-space valley degrees of freedom. Although all of these phases are metallic at zero magnetic field, we observe a transition to a superconducting state at finite magnetic field B ∥ ≈ 150 milliteslas applied parallel to the two-dimensional sheet. Superconductivity occurs near a symmetry-breaking transition and exists exclusively above the B ∥ limit expected of a paramagnetic superconductor with the observed transition critical temperature T C ≈ 30 millikelvins, consistent with a spin-triplet order parameter.
