Evidence for quantum spin liquid behaviour in single-layer 1T-TaSe 2 from scanning tunnelling microscopy

Two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnets are predicted under some conditions to exhibit a quantum spin liquid ground state with no energy barrier to create emergent, fractionalized spinon excitations that carry spin but no charge. Materials that realize this kind of spin liquid are expected to have a low-energy behaviour described by a spinon Fermi surface. Directly imaging the resulting spinons, however, is difficult due to their chargeless nature. In this work, we use scanning tunnelling spectroscopy to image density waves consistent with the predictions of spinon density modulation arising from a spinon Fermi surface instability in single-layer 1T-TaSe 2 . We confirm the existence of a triangular lattice of localized spins in this material by contacting it with a metallic 1H-TaSe 2 substrate and measuring the Kondo effect. Spectroscopic imaging of isolated single-layer 1T-TaSe 2 reveals long-wavelength super-modulations at Hubbard band energies, consistent with the predicted behaviour of itinerant spinons. These super-modulations allow the direct experimental measurement of the spinon Fermi wavevector, in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a two-dimensional quantum spin liquid.

Nonlinear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of the delafossite proximate quantum spin liquid candidates KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular-lattice resonating-valence-bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 . We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe 2 heat capacity using high-temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe 2 fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg ratio J 2 / J 1 to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 shows that the smaller A -site Na + ion has a larger J 2 / J 1 ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe 2 increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases J 2 / J 1 . In conclusion, these results show how the periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the A YbSe 2 materials in a controlled way.

Pressure-induced insulator-to-metal transition in the quantum spin liquid candidate lithium ytterbium diselenide

Metallization of quantum spin liquid (QSL) materials has long been considered as a potential route toward unconventional superconductivity. Here, we investigate the pressurization of lithium ytterbium diselenide (LiYbSe 2 ), a three-dimensional QSL candidate with a pyrochlore structure. High-pressure X-ray diffraction (up to 15 GPa) and Raman spectroscopy (up to 48 GPa) reveal no significant structural changes within this pressure range. Remarkably insulating, LiYbSe 2 exhibits a resistance below 10 5 Ω only at pressures exceeding 25 GPa, accompanied by a gradual reduction of band gap upon compression. Interestingly, an insulator-to-metal transition occurs around 68 GPa, and the metallic behavior persists up to 123.5 GPa, the highest pressure achieved in this study. A possible sign of magnetic transitions is also observed. The insulator-to-metal transition in LiYbSe 2 under high pressure presents an ideal platform to explore the pressure effects on QSL candidates of spin-1/2 Yb 3+ systems with various lattice patterns.

Real-space chirality from crystalline topological defects in the Kitaev spin liquid

We show that certain crystalline topological defects in the gapless Kitaev honeycomb spin liquid model generate a chirality and Majorana fermion orbital magnetization that depends in a universal manner on their emergent flux. Focusing on 5–7 dislocations as building blocks, consisting of pentagon and heptagon disclinations, we identify the Kitaev bond label configurations that preserve solvability. By computing two formulations of local markers M(r) we find that the 5 and 7 lattice defects generate a real-space contribution to Chern number and an associated Majorana fermion orbital magnetization proportional to M(r). The sign of the M(r) contribution from each 5/7 defect, i.e. its q M = ± 1 chirality, is determined by the defect Frank angle sign F and emergent gauge field flux W = ± i through the expression q M = − iFW. Remarkably, though lattice curvature and torsion can interplay with the surrounding gapless background to modify the profile of M(r), its sign q M is determined locally, implying that crystalline defects in the Kitaev spin liquid can generate a robust and observable chirality.

Magnetic impurity as a local probe of the $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface

We solve the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a U(1) quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface, and we compute the impurity spectral function. Using the slave rotor mean-field approach combined with gauge field fluctuations, we find that a peak located at the top of the lower Hubbard band and one at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band can emerge in the impurity spectral function. The peaks at the Hubbard band edges arise from the gauge field fluctuation-induced spinon-chargon binding inside the spinon Kondo screening cloud of the magnetic impurity. For a magnetic impurity embedded in a Mott insulator, our findings suggest that the emergence of a pair of peaks at the Hubbard band edges in the impurity density of states spectra provides strong evidence that the host Mott insulator is a U(1) quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface.

Probing Majorana wavefunctions in Kitaev honeycomb spin liquids with second-order two-dimensional spectroscopy

Two-dimensional coherent terahertz spectroscopy (2DCS) emerges as a valuable tool to probe the nature, couplings, and lifetimes of excitations in quantum materials. It thus promises to identify unique signatures of spin liquid states in quantum magnets by directly probing properties of their exotic fractionalized excitations. Here, we calculate the second-order 2DCS of the Kitaev honeycomb model and demonstrate that distinct spin liquid fingerprints appear already in this lowest-order nonlinear response $\chi^{(2)}_{yzx}(\omega_1, \omega_2)$ when using crossed light polarizations. We further relate the off-diagonal 2DCS peaks to the localized nature of the matter Majorana excitations trapped by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ flux excitations and show that 2DCS thus directly probes the inverse participation ratio of Majorana wavefunctions. By providing experimentally observable features of spin liquid states in the 2D spectrum, our work can guide future 2DCS experiments on Kitaev magnets.

Proximate Quantum Spin Liquid on Designer Lattice

Complementary to bulk synthesis, here we propose a designer lattice with extremely high magnetic frustration and demonstrate the possible realization of a quantum spin liquid state from both experiments and theoretical calculations. In an ultrathin (111) CoCr 2 O 4 slice composed of three triangular and one kagome cation planes, the absence of a spin ordering or freezing transition is demonstrated down to 0.03 K, in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic correlations in the energy scale of 30 K between Co and Cr sublattices, leading to the frustration factor of similar to 1000. Persisting spin fluctuations are observed at low temperatures via low-energy muon spin relaxation. Our calculations further demonstrate the emergence of highly degenerate magnetic ground states at the 0 K limit, due to the competition among multiply altered exchange interactions. Furthermore, these results collectively indicate the realization of a proximate quantum spin liquid state on the synthetic lattice.

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

The 3⁢d 7 Co 2+ -based insulating magnet Na 2 ⁢Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quandum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here, in this study, we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the a and a* axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along c. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements, we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find additional high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after any combination of magnetic/electric field cooling suggests that a zigzag spin structure is more likely than a triple-Q spin structure at zero field. Finally, we investigate the hysteresis and first- or second-order nature of each phase transition and its entropy changes. With this information, we establish a map of the magnetic phases of this compound and its magnetic, thermodynamic, and magnetoelectric properties, and discuss where spin liquid or other phases may be sought in future studies.

Chiral spin liquid and quantum phase transition in the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model

Recent advances in moiré engineering motivate the study of lattice models of strongly correlated electrons subjected to substantial orbital magnetic flux. We analyze the triangular-lattice Hofstadter-Hubbard model at one-quarter flux quantum per plaquette and a density of one electron per site, where a chiral spin liquid phase may exist between weak-coupling integer quantum Hall and strong-coupling 120° antiferromagnetic phases. Here, we use matrix product state methods and analytical arguments to investigate this model compactified to cylinders of finite circumference. We uncover a glide particle-hole symmetry operation which, we argue, is spontaneously broken at the quantum Hall to spin liquid transition on odd-circumference cylinders. We numerically verify the spontaneous symmetry breaking and further demonstrate that this transition is associated with algebraic long-range correlations of various spin-singlet, charge-neutral operators. For even-circumference cylinders, the transition becomes a crossover associated with a large correlation length that grows substantially with circumference. Our findings suggest that in the two-dimensional limit, the transition to a chiral spin liquid phase is continuous and features critical fluctuations of the current.

Detection of long-range entanglement in gapped quantum spin liquids by local measurements

Topological order, reflected in long-range patterns of entanglement, is quantified by the topological entanglement entropy γ. We show that for gapped quantum spin liquids it is possible to extract γ using two-spin local correlators. We demonstrate our method for the gapped Z 2 Kitaev spin liquid on a honeycomb lattice with anisotropic interactions. We show that the γ = ln⁡2 for Z 2 topological order can be simply extracted from local two-spin correlators across two different bonds that involve only Majorana fermions, with an accuracy comparable to or higher than the Kitaev-Preskill construction. This implies that even though the ground state can be factorized into the product of Majorana and gauge sectors, the different superselection sectors of Z 2 gauge theory determined by global Wilson loop operators can be reflected locally in the Majorana sector.

Transition between Heavy-Fermion-Strange-Metal and Quantum Spin Liquid in a $4⁢d$-Electron Trimer Lattice

We present experimental evidence that a heavy Fermi surface consisting of itinerant, charge-neutral spinons underpins both heavy-fermion-strange-metal (without f electrons) and quantum-spin-liquid states in the 4d-electron trimer lattice, Ba 4 Nb 1-x Ru 3+x O 12 (|x| < 0.20). These two exotic states both exhibit an extraordinarily large entropy, a linear heat capacity extending into the milli-Kelvin regime, a linear thermal conductivity at low temperatures, and separation of charges and spins. Furthermore, the insulating spin liquid is a much better thermal conductor than the heavy-fermion-strange-metal that separately is observed to strongly violate the Wiedemann- Franz law. Here, we propose that at the heart of this 4d system is a universal, heavy spinon Fermi surface that provides a unified framework for explaining the exotic phenomena observed throughout the entire series. The control of such exotic ground states provided by variable Nb concentration offers a new paradigm for studies of correlated quantum matter.

Spectroscopic Demarcation of Emergent Photons and Spinons in a Dipolar-Octupolar Quantum Spin Liquid

The identification of fractionalized excitations in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) remains a central challenge in condensed matter physics. In dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, such as Ce 2⁢ Zr 2 ⁢O 7 , the candidate 𝜋-flux quantum spin ice (QSI) state is predicted to host both gapless emergent photons and a continuum of spinons. However, resolving these modes at zero field is complicated by their spectral overlap and the presence of nonmagnetic scattering near zero energy. Here, in this study, we report neutron scattering experiments on Ce 2 ⁢Zr 2 ⁢O 7 under a magnetic field along the [1, 1, 1] direction. In contrast to previous unpolarized studies at zero field that relied on high-temperature subtraction, we use a same-temperature high-field subtraction protocol to isolate the photon and spinon modes. Leveraging the selective coupling of the magnetic field to the dipolar degrees of freedom, we demonstrate the spectroscopic demarcation of these excitations. We observe that weak fields (≈ 0.15 T) suppress the low-energy photon weight while leaving the high-energy spinon continuum robust, albeit hardened. Our results, supported by gauge mean-field theory and exact diagonalization calculations, provide strong evidence for the 𝜋-flux QSI state and introduce a powerful field-tuning protocol for investigating DO-QSLs.

Probing chiral Kitaev spin liquids via dangling boundary fermions

Identifying experimental probes capable of diagnosing extreme quantum behavior is widely regarded as one of the foremost challenges in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we propose a novel approach for detecting chiral Kitaev spin-liquid states through measurements of the local dynamical spin structure factor on the boundary using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We specifically focus on unpaired (“dangling”) Majorana fermions, which naturally emerge along boundaries of Kitaev spin liquids, and can serve as indicators of chiral boundary modes under broad conditions, thereby offering a clear signature of these exotic quantum states.

Tunneling Spectroscopy of Quantum Spin Liquids

Here, we examine the spectroscopic signatures of tunneling through a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) barrier in a number of experimentally relevant geometries. We combine contributions from elastic and inelastic tunneling processes and find that spin-flip scattering at the itinerant spinon modes gives rise to a gapped contribution to the tunneling conductance spectrum. We address the spectral modifications that arise in a magnetic field, which is applied to drive the candidate material α-RuCl 3 into a QSL phase, and we propose a lateral 1D tunnel junction as a viable setup in this regime. The characteristic spin gap is an unambiguous signature of the fractionalized QSL excitations, distinguishing it from magnons or phonons. We discuss the generalization of our results to a wide variety of QSLs with gapped and gapless spin correlators.

Probing fractional statistics in quantum simulators of spin liquid Hamiltonians

Recent advances in programmable quantum devices brought to the fore the intriguing possibility of using them to realise and investigate topological quantum spin liquid phases. This new and exciting direction brings about important research questions on how to probe and determine the presence of such exotic, highly entangled phases in a noisy quantum environment. One of the most promising tools is investigating the behaviour of the topological excitations, and in particular their fractional statistics. In this work we put forward a generic route to achieve this, and we illustrate it in the specific case of \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 topological spin liquids implemented with the aid of combinatorial gauge symmetry. We design a convenient architecture to study signatures of fractional statistics via quasiparticle interferometry, and we assess its robustness to diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, as well as to dephasing - effects that are generally pervasive in current quantum programmable devices. Interestingly, when turned on its head, our scheme provides a remarkably clear test of the “quantumness” of these devices, with robust signatures that crucially hinge on quantum coherence and quantum interference effects, and cannot be mimicked by classical stochastic processes.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .
