Floating Solar at Lima's Twin Lakes Reservoir

The City of Lima, Ohio is developing a floating photovoltaic (FPV) facility on the surface of Twin Lake Reservoir, adjacent to the City’s water treatment plant. The FPV array is designed with a capacity of 2 megawatts (MW) and will consist of approximately 3,500 solar panels spanning more than four acres of water surface. Based on regional solar conditions, the system will generate 2,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually. While the FPV system will interconnect to the electrical infrastructure serving the water treatment plant, power produced by the system will be net-metered through the utility grid, with energy credits applied to offset the plant’s overall electrical demand rather than directly supplying all plant loads in real time.

Review of High-Throughput Surface Treatments for Microlens Arrays

Microlenses are increasingly being integrated into modern manufactured devices. From printed security devices and screens to solar panels and microscopes, these optical materials offer high control over light focusing. Thus, understanding how to treat the surfaces of these fragile, transparent devices on an integrated manufacturing line is essential. Here, in this study, we review the surface treatments for the following application categories: cleaning, increasing surface energy, decreasing surface energy, and tunable surface modifications. This overview describes methods available for the large-scale manufacturing of microlens arrays and the potential impact of those treatments on common optical surfaces. Objectives and qualitative compatibility parameters are compared, and outlooks are provided for further study to aid in streamlining the method selection and process optimization for microlenses and similar optical components.

Performance Assessment of Photovoltaic Panels Using Impedance Spectroscopy

The goal of this project was to develop a technique for measuring internal characteristics of a PV module using light modulation under a fixed voltage bias while measuring the resulting alternating current. This technique, light-intensity modulated impedance spectroscopy (LIMIS), has the promise of detecting early signs of panel aging and degradation that could be used for example by solar farm operators to have early warnings to repair or replace panels to maintain reliability of the overall PV array. LIMIS would be complementary with the previously developed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which uses an alternating voltage applied electrically to a solar cell with a similar alternating current measurement. EIS has mostly been developed for individual PV cells rather than whole modules. The project was intended to assess what different information could be revealed by LIMIS, which may in some cases be more scalable to larger modules and potentially more practical to apply in field measurements without needing to electrically disconnect PV modules. We began with small 10 W PV modules and built a testbed capable of oscillating the light intensity with frequencies up to 50 kHz. In parallel, we built a large testbed for testing large 250 W PV modules. Meanwhile, we developed procedures for established measurement techniques: current–voltage (I–V), EIS, and electroluminescence (EL) imaging, where panels are subjected to forward bias while their infrared emission is recorded using a camera modified to be sensitive to IR wavelengths. In addition, we developed protocols for accelerated aging of PV modules in two ways. Thermal cycling from –40°C to +90°C simulates the diurnal temperature cycles on a rooftop. Mechanical stress by dropping a 227 g ball from a height of 1 m simulates damage such as that due to hail impacts.

Technoeconomic Analysis of a Solar Thermochemical Fuel Production Process Using a Packed-Bed Redox Reactor

The production of sustainable liquid fuels is paramount in decarbonization of difficult to abate sectors such as the aviation and maritime sectors. Solar thermochemical fuel production is a promising pathway to produce such fuels using concentrated solar thermal (CST) power driving high-temperature redox reactions, coupled with a gas-to-liquid process. In this work we present a preliminary technoeconomic analysis of a solar fuels plant, utilizing a new fixed-bed countercurrent redox reactor and combining both CST and photovoltaic arrays to supply the required energy.

A Planar-Cavity Receiver Configuration for High-Temperature Solar Thermal Processes: Preprint

Next generation concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) and novel solar thermochemical systems using concentrating solar thermal (CST) energy require high operating temperatures exceeding those of traditional nitrate-salt CSP systems. Particle-based systems are attractive for next-generation CSP and CST applications owing to high-temperature stability of inert silica- or alumina-based particulate materials, the lack of low-temperature freezing concerns that limit molten salt and/or molten metal heat transfer media, and cost-effective thermal storage using low-cost particulate and containment materials. Open-cavity falling particle receivers have many potential advantages, but face challenges pertaining to scalability, thermal loss, and particle loss through the open aperture, and are infeasible for chemical processes that require a low-oxygen ambient environment. Enclosed receiver configurations can be scalable, avoid particle loss when heating particles, and have potential for future chemical processes; however, particle-based heat transfer media provide substantially lower heat transfer rates than liquid media, and thus enclosed particle receiver designs require novel configurations to limit surface temperatures under the high incident solar flux concentrations necessary for high receiver thermal efficiency at high temperature. This paper introduces the novel planar-cavity enclosed particle receiver configuration in which arrays of planar surfaces are arranged into sub-vertical cavities. Large angles between the panel surface normal vectors and the aperture surface normal allow the incoming solar beam to distribute along the panel walls. Correspondingly, a high incident solar flux concentration at the cavity aperture produces substantially lower absorbed solar flux concentration on any panel wall. Sets of individual vertical cavities can be arranged to form a scalable receiver configuration.

PV backsheets survey protocol: A framework for geo-spatial field surveys for bulk material characterization and reliability analysis applied across 41 PV systems

As widespread adoption of photovoltaic (PV) technologies continues, understanding the lifetime of modules is paramount to the viability of the industry as an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional energy generation. Although power degradation can affect the total energy production of a module over its lifetime, module safety failures necessitate the removal of a module leading to a loss of not only the particular asset, but the earning potential of the device. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that the components that provide essential safety functions for PV module operate for their entire rated lifetime. PV backsheets provide necessary electrical insulation to the completed device and failure of this component is cause for a immediate removal of the module. Degradation of the PV module backsheet has led to module safety failures in large-scale installations, costing millions of dollars in damages and lost potential revenue. The spatio-temporal degradation of fielded PV modules is important to study in order to identify which modules within installations are experiencing the greatest exposure conditions and in turn have the highest chance of failure. This paper describes a comprehensive field survey protocol developed for monitoring PV module backsheet performance using solely non-destructive methods in commercial PV fields. The protocol establishes a field naming convention, sampling method, data handling requirements, and measurement procedures. By ensuring consistent data collection practices, the field survey protocol enables research groups to obtain data of uniform quality on backsheet performance over multiple years and locations. In this study, the developed protocol was implemented at forty-one PV sites. Eight different types of airside layer backsheet materials including poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), acrylic PVDF, poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene-co-vinylidene fluoride) (THV), poly(vinyl fluoride) (PVF), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), and glass were identified using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The field survey results show that the spatial distribution of degradation indicators are non-uniform within a particular module, individual site, and across site locations. The degradation of PV modules increased in severity for modules mounted at the edge of rows (across a field) and near the junction box (within a module). This study demonstrates the sensitivity of material performance to exposure length across different materials and climates.

This paper presents the preliminary results and findings of the four operational Floating PV systems across the USA. At each site, temperature of five PV modules located at North-West, North-East, Middle, South-West, and, South-East have been monitored through the Resistant Temperature Detector (RTD) sensors. Three RTDs were attached to each PV module on the rear-side along the diagonal at top, middle and bottom cells. The preliminary results reveal wide temperature differences among the inter and intra PV modules. Besides this, wave pattern temperatures were observed in a few PV modules. The final results, findings, and, factors responsible will be investigated during the next few months.

Bridging Additive Manufacturing and Electronics Printing in the Age of AI

Printing techniques have been instrumental in developing flexible and stretchable electronics, including organic light-emitting diode displays, organic thin film transistor arrays, electronic skins, organic electrochemical transistors for biosensors and neuromorphic computing, as well as flexible solar cells with low-cost processes such as inkjet printing, ultrasonic nozzle, roll-to-roll coating. The rise of additive manufacturing provides even more opportunities to print electronics in automated and customizable ways. In this work, we will review the current technologies of printing electronics (including printed batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and sensors), especially with 3D printing. In this age of ongoing AI revolution, the application of AI algorithms is discussed in terms of combining them with 3D printing and electronics printing for a future with automated optimization, sustainable design, and customizable and scalable manufacturing.

AquaPV: Foundational Analysis and Industry Guidance on Floating PV Results

This dataset contains results of the technical potential analysis of floating photovoltaics (FPV) on federally owned or permitted reservoirs in the United States. Estimates of the area of reservoirs that is technically feasible for FPV development are provided for reservoirs that are owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers or the US Bureau of Reclamation, or are associated with hydropower dams licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Other associated data are included, such as estimates of the potential evaporative losses of FPV development, and whether the waterbody is associated with an energy community or disadvantaged community that could qualify it for investment or production tax credits. Data is provided both as a spreadsheet and in a geospatial format including the waterbody geometries. Please read the included readme for more detailed field definitions.

A Monolithic Artificial Leaf for Solar Methanol Production from CO 2 and H 2 O

Methanol, an important liquid fuel and chemical feedstock, has yet to be produced using solar energy, H 2 O, and CO 2 as sole inputs in a standalone device. Here, this study directly addresses this longstanding challenge through presenting the first demonstration of unbiased solar methanol production from CO 2 and H 2 O with a monolithic artificial leaf design, surpassing the previous best energy efficiency in solar alcohol production by at least 1 order of magnitude. We first develop a new generation of photocathodes based on Si micropillar arrays and a cobalt tetraaminophthalocyanine molecular catalyst. By integrating a C 60 interlayer that facilitates unidirectional electron transfer through the semiconductor/catalyst interface, we realize a photovoltage of 500 mV, one of the highest recorded for single-junction Si-based photoelectrodes in aqueous CO 2 reduction, as well as unprecedented methanol formation with a Faradaic efficiency of 30% and a partial current density of 6.3 mA cm –2 . We further integrate the photocathode with a multijunction perovskite photovoltaic minimodule to afford a standalone solar fuel system, which demonstrates a light-to-methanol conversion efficiency of 0.8%, 32 times higher than the present record in light-to-alcohol conversion with an artificial leaf.

Foreword: Special Section on Multiphysics Aspects of Power Electronics Packaging—Power Die, Power Module, and Converter Level: Part 2

Power electronics are increasingly being used to condition electricity for a wide array of applications, such as transportation (on land, air, and water), data centers, radio frequency, directed energy, wind, solar, and grid-tied applications. Here, to increase power density, performance, efficiency, and reliability-as well as to reduce cost-innovations and developments are needed in the multiphysics packaging of power electronics at a die, module, and converter level. This includes fundamental R&D related to emerging high-voltage, high-temperature, and high-switching-frequency power electronics, packaging materials, thermal materials and interfaces, fluid-based thermal management technologies, reliability, condition monitoring, and prognostics. Latest developments in this area are published as a Special Section on Multiphysics Aspects of Power Electronics Packaging. The first part was published in the May 2024 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology (Volume 14, Issue 5). The second part of that Special Section is being published in this issue. A brief summary of the papers included in the second part are given below.

National Climate Database (NCDB)

The National Climate Database (NCDB) is a high resolution, bias-corrected climate dataset consisting of the three most widely used variables of solar radiation- global horizontal (GHI), direct normal (DNI), and diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI)- as well as other meteorological data. The goal of the NCDB is to provide unbiased high temporal and spatial resolution climate data needed for renewable energy modeling. The NCDB is modeled using a statistical downscaling approach with Regional Climate Model (RCM)-based climate projections obtained from the North American Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (NA-CORDEX; linked below). Daily climate projections simulated by the Canadian Regional Climate Model 4 (CanRCM4) forced by the second-generation Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM2) for two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 or moderate emissions scenario and RCP8.5 or highest baseline emission scenario) are selected as inputs to the statistical downscaling models. The National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) is used to build and calibrate statistical models.

2024 Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) Cost and Performance Data for Electricity Generation Technologies

These data provide the 2024 update of the Electricity Annual Technology Baseline (ATB). Starting in 2015 NREL has presented the ATB, consisting of detailed cost and performance data, both current and projected, for electricity generation and storage technologies. The ATB products now include data (Excel workbook, Tableau workbooks, and structured summary csv files), as well as documentation and user engagement via a website, presentation, and webinar. Starting in 2021, the data are cloud optimized and provided in the OEDI data lake. The data for 2015 - 2020 are can be found on the NREL Data Search Page. The website documentation can be found on the ATB Website.

“Antenna-like” Light-Harvesting in Partially Metalated Porphyrin Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

Arrays of light harvesting molecules with long-range order hold promise as materials capable of efficient collection of photons as well as rapid transport of captured solar energy to chemical catalysts. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) could be promising artificial light-harvesting platforms, due to their crystalline nature and their comparative ease of synthesis. In this work, mixed-linkers of either zinc-metallated or free base tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin HOFs were examined and found to demonstrate ‘antenna-like’ light harvesting behavior. Using time-resolved emission spectroscopy, Förster resonance energy transfer from zinc porphyrin to free-base porphyrin was assessed. Based on changes in the emission peak profile as the ratio of zinc porphyrin to free-base porphyrin is varied, we find that, in the limit of 100% zinc porphyrin, a photogenerated exciton can sample ~48 chromophores. These findings suggest that stacked linkers within HOFs can act as light harvesting ‘antennae’ and with encapsulation of suitable catalysts, may offer prospective application as photochemical energy conversion systems.

Sequential Infiltration Synthesis of Cadmium Sulfide Discrete Atom Clusters

Abstract Exposure of soft material templates to alternating volatile chemical precursors can produce inorganic deposition within the permeable template (e.g. a polymer thin film) in a process akin to atomic layer deposition (ALD). While such sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) processes have now been demonstrated for many metal oxides, we report an SIS process for a transition metal sulfide – CdS. Gas phase dimethyl cadmium and hydrogen sulfide precursors infiltrated into poly(4‐vinylpyridine) thin films result in the 3D‐nucleation of clusters consistent with a cubane‐type Cd 4 S 4 core that are variably terminated with methyl, thiol and hydroxy capping ligands. First principles models and simulation of few‐atom Cd‐based clusters are consistent with electronic and vibrational spectroscopy and grazing‐incidence total X‐ray scattering measurements of 3D‐cluster‐arrays synthesized at 80 °C. The direct synthesis of few‐atom transition metal sulfide clusters within polymer thin films will provide a versatile new route to precision architectures for light‐absorbing materials including solar energy harvesting and conversion applications.
