The Broad-lined Ic Supernova ZTF18aaqjovh (SN 2018bvw): An Optically Discovered Engine-driven Supernova Candidate with Luminous Radio Emission

We present ZTF18aaqjovh (SN 2018bvw), a high-velocity ("broad-lined") stripped-envelope (Type Ic) supernova (Ic-BL SN) discovered in the Zwicky Transient Facility one-day cadence survey. ZTF18aaqjovh shares a number of features in common with engine-driven explosions: the photospheric velocity and the shape of the optical light curve are very similar to those of the Type Ic-BL SN 1998bw, which was associated with a low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) and had relativistic ejecta. However, the radio luminosity of ZTF18aaqjovh is almost two orders of magnitude fainter than that of SN 1998bw at the same velocity phase, and the shock velocity is at most mildly relativistic (v = 0.06–0.4c). A search of high-energy catalogs reveals no compelling gamma-ray burst (GRB) counterpart to ZTF18aaqjovh, and the limit on the prompt GRB luminosity of L(γ(ꙩ)iso) ≈ 1.6 x 10^(48) erg/s excludes a classical GRB but not an LLGRB. Altogether, ZTF18aaqjovh represents another transition event between engine-driven SNe associated with GRBs and "ordinary" Ic-BL SNe.

Is the remnant of SN 1006 Crablike

The solid-state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory and the GSFC cosmic X-ray spectrometer on OSO 8 have observed the X-ray spectrum of SN 1006. The data can be well represented by a power-law model with alpha = 1.2, similar to the spectrum of the Crab Nebula. This is in contrast to the radio and X-ray maps of SN 1006 which show a shell structure more typical of SNR with thermal X-ray emission. The X-ray spectrum is suggestive of nonthermal synchrotron emission, raising the possibility that the remnant of SN 1006 contains a source of relativistic electrons.

The X-ray spectrum of SN 1006

The supernova (SN) of A.D. 1006 represents the brightest in recorded history. The X-ray observations of its remnant appear to be full of puzzles. The present paper has the objective to reevaluate published X-ray data on SN 1006, using detailed nonequilibrium spectral computations and a self-consistent hydrodynamic SNR model. In a summary of the main conclusions, it is pointed out that an observed power-law continuum can be understood as mainly free-free emission from a reverse shock into SN ejecta with an initially uniform density profile. The spectral index is correctly predicted by such a model. Most of the continuum is produced by fully ionized gas in the dense outer layers of ejecta. The X-ray spectrum is not consistent with a solar composition or a uniform composition but is consistent with a layered composition of ejecta containing carbon on the outside, and processed heavy elements on the inside. There is no difficulty in including a large mass of iron.

Detection of a very bright source close to the LMC supernova SN 1987A

High angular resolution observations of the supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, SN 1987A, have revealed a bright source separated from the SN by approximately 60 mas with a magnitude difference of 2.7 at 656 nm (H-alpha). Speckle imaging techniques were applied to data recorded with the CfA two-dimensional photon counting detector on the CTIO 4 m telescope on March 25 and April 2 to allow measurements in H-alpha on both nights and at 533 nm and 450 nm on the second night. The nature of this object is as yet unknown, though it is almost certainly a phenomenon related to the SN.

Optical observations of SN 1987D in UGC 7370

This paper presents optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN 1987D, a Type Ia supernova in the nearby galaxy UGC 7370, during the period immediately subsequent to its discovery. The distance modulus of the galaxy, independently determined by the redshift and the Tully-Fisher (1977) relation, is 32.3 + or - 1.0. The maximum brightness of SN 1987D was V about 13.2 and occurred on April 18, 1987, + or - 4 days; the absolute luminosity is about 0.6 mag brighter than the average for SNe Ia. The spectrum of SN 1987D is typical of SNe Ia, but the expansion velocity (9600 km/s) is considerably lower than average.

Near infrared spectroscopy of SN 1987A using the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

An IR spectrum (1.5-3.0 microns) of SN 1987A was obtained on UT April 16.3, 1987 with the University of Arizona Fourier-transform spectrometer on the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The dominant spectral features were a double-peaked P-alpha emission line and a sharp absorption edge in the continuum at 2.7 microns, both of which would have been obscured by strong telluric H2O absorptions at ground-based observatories. These IR features relate to models of the SN shell and to the role of dust in SN.

The Progenitor of SN 1987A

Spatially resolved IUE spectra (1150 to 2000 A) taken at the position of SN 1987A in March 1987 show that the 12th mag B3 I star Sk -69 deg 202 disappeared. Only the fainter companion stars (Star 2 and Star 3) are present near the site of the supernova. It is concluded that Sk -69 deg 202 exploded to produce SN 1987A. The known characteristics of Sk -69 deg 202 are consistent with the interpretation that the progenitor was a relatively compact star, having a high-velocity low-density stellar wind prior to the outburst. Recent IUE spectra of SN 1987A (May 1988) show no evidence that Sk -69 deg 202 still exists inside the expanding ejecta.

Macrosegregation in undercooled Pb-Sn eutectic alloys

A novel technique resulting in large undercoolings in bulk samples (23g) of lead-tin eutectic alloy is described. Samples of eutectic composition were processed with undercoolings ranging from 4 to 20 K and with cooling rates varying between 0.04 to 4 K/sec. The final macrostructure of undercooled samples depends on both the initial undercooling of the melt and the cooling rate. Gravity-driven segregation is found to increase with increasing undercooling. A eutectic Pb-Sn alloy undercooled at 20 K and cooled at 4 K/sec had a composition of about Pb-72 wt pct Sn at the top and 55 pct Sn at the bottom. Macrosegregation in these undercooled lead-tin eutectic alloys is shown to be primarily due to a sink/float mechanism caused by the difference in density of the solid and liquid phases and the undercooling and nucleation behavior of the alloy.

SN 1961V - An extragalactic ETA Carinae analog

Spectra of the site of the unique type V supernova SN 1961V in NGC 1058 and of two nearby H II regions have been obtained. Broad H-alpha emission with a luminosity of 2 x 10 to the 36th ergs/s is detected at the position, so that SN 1961V becomes the first historical extragalactic object classified as a supernova to be optically recovered. The characteristics and origin of the high-excitation H II regions of the site are discussed. It is argued that SN 1961V was not a supernova, but an exaggerated Eta Carinae-type outburst of a very massive, evolved star near the end of core hydrogen burning.

Illuminating a red supergiant wind around SN 1987A

A recently discovered light echo at a radius of about 9 arcsec from SN 1987A is interpreted as the result of a circumstellar shell at a radius of 4.5 pc from the SN. The shell may have its origin in the deceleration of the pre-SN red supergiant wind by the pressure of the surrounding medium. The required pressure is p/k = about 1000 per cu cm K. The echo is predicted to expand and contract over the next 30 yr with a declining surface brightness and a broadening of its width. Colors of the echo compared to those of the larger echoes may show differences in the wavelength dependence of scattering of the circumstellar grains compared to interstellar grains.

Electronic state and superconductivity of YBa2Cu3-xO7-y (M=Al,Zn and Sn) systems

A series of YBa2Cu(3-x)MxO(7-y) (M=Al,Zn and Sn) single phase samples were prepared, and the measurements of the crystal structure, oxygen content, electric resistivity, thermoelectric power, Mossbauer spectrum, XPS and superconductivity were performed. The experimental results of X ray powder diffraction, Mossbauer spectrum and oxygen content show that the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) occupy the Cu(2) site in Cu-O planes and the Cu(1) site in Cu-O chains respectively, but the Sn(4+) occupies both the Cu(1) sites. As regards the properties in superconducting state, both the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) depress T(sub c) strongly, but the Sn(4+) does not. As for the electronic transport properties in normal state, the system doped by Al(3+) displays a rapid increase of resistivity and some electron localization-like effects, and the thermoelectric power enhances obviously; the series contained Zn(2+) almost shows no changes of electric resistivity but the sign of the thermoelectric power is reversed. Other results are given and briefly discussed.

Model atmospheres for SN 1987A and the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud

A code which simultaneously solves the non-LTE equations of statistical equilibrium and the time-independent equation of radiation transport in an expanding atmosphere is applied to analyze the spectrum of SN 1987A. The behavior of a model atmosphere in which the density structure is a power-law function of radius has been studied and compared closely with SN 1987A data. This model atmosphere is used to derive corrections to the expanding photosphere method for determining distances to supernovae. The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud derived from SN 1987A observations by this 'custom yardstick' is 49 + or - 6 kpc in excellent accord with results for RR Lyrae stars and for Cepheids. This empirical test of the expanding photosphere method provides the basis for hope that it may make a significant contribution to the extragalactic distance scale at cosmologically interesting distances.

A model of the pre-Sedov expansion phase of supernova remnant-ambient plasma coupling and X-ray emission from SN 1987A

This paper examines the mechanism responsible for coupling supernova (SN) remnant to the ambient medium during the pre-Sedov or the so-called free expansion phase, immediately following the progenitor explosion. A theory is developed for the interaction of an SN piston with the ambient medium during the pre-Sedov phase. The possibility of X-ray production by the high-speed portion of the piston during this phase is investigated. The relevant observations of high-energy emissions from the SN 1987A, including the X-ray spectrum, luminosity, and temporal development, are considered. It is shown that the commonly assumed snowplow model for SNR evolution is valid, because of the action of a variety of collisionless two-stream instabilities that permit the coupling of the ambient plasma with SNR.

HEAO 1 A-2 low-energy detector X-ray spectra of the Lupus Loop and SN 1006

The Lupus Loop and SN 1006 were observed by the A-2 low-energy detector proportional counters on the HEAO 1 satellite as part of the all-sky survey. As a result of a major advance in understanding of detector response and background accurate analysis of the data has become possible. Soft X-ray spectra for both supernova remnants were constructed from the PHA data taken during the scanning observations. Single-temperature and two-temperature Raymond-Smith models were fitted to the observed spectra. In addition, power-law and power-law plus one-temperature models were fitted to the spectrum of SN 1006. Only two-component models provide an adequate description for both Lupus Loop and SN 1006 spectra. The temperatures, column densities, and emission measures are significantly more accurate than previous results.

Tensile properties of cast titanium alloys: Titanium-6Al-4V ELI and Titanium-5Al-2.5Sn ELI

This work was performed to determine the tensile properties of cast, hot isostatic pressed (HIP'ed), and annealed titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V ELI and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI, that are candidate materials for the space transportation main engine (STME) liquid hydrogen turbopump impeller. Samples of the cast alloys were HIP'ed, annealed, and machined into tensile specimens. The specimens were tested in air at ambient temperature (70 F) and also at -423 F in liquid hydrogen. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy had an average ultimate strength of 129.1 ksi at 70 F and 212.2 ksi at -423 F. The Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy had an average ultimate strength of 108.4 ksi at 70 degrees F and 185.0 ksi at -423 F. The ductility, as measured by reduction of area, for the Ti-6Al-4V averaged 15.2 percent at 70 F and 8.7 percent at -423 F, whereas for the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy average reduction of area was 24.6 percent at 70 F and 11.7 percent at -423 F.

Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment observations of Co-57 in SN 1987A

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory has observed SN 1987A for two 2 week periods during the first 9 months of the mission. Evidence for gamma-ray line and continuum emission from Co-57 is observed with an intensity of about 10 exp -4 gamma/sq cm/s. This photon flux between 50 and 136 keV is demonstrated by Monte Carlo calculations to be independent of the radial distribution of Co-57 for models of low optical depth, viz., models having photoelectric absorption losses of 122 keV photons no greater than several percent. For such models the observed Co-57 flux indicates that the ratio Ni-57/Ni-56 produced in the explosion was about 1.5 times the solar system ratio of Fe-57/Fe-56. When compared with nearly contemporaneous bolometric estimates of the luminosity for SN 1987A, our observations imply that Co-57 radioactivity does not account for most of the current luminosity of the supernova remnant in low optical depth models. We suggest alternatives, including a large optical depth model that is able to provide the SN 1987A luminosity and is consistent with the OSSE flux. It requires a 57/56 production ratio about twice solar.

SN 1991bg - A type Ia supernova with a difference

While SN 1991bg is an unusual type Ia SN in such a feature as the brief duration of the photospheric phase, which ended only two weeks after maximum, it shares with other Ia SNs strong Si II and Ca II lines near maximum light. In addition, the light and color curve slopes are almost identical with the templates at late times. The spectral evolution of SN 1991bg is also unique but not unrecognizable; nevertheless, the peculiarities associated with this event complicate the fundamental question as to whether the Ia SNs make good standard candles.

Faint object camera observations of the shape and expansion of SN 1987A

A comparison is made between HST Faint-Object Camera visible and near-IR imagery of SN 1987A obtained 1754 days after outburst and those obtained after 1278 days. The SN has dimmed by a factor of 0.35 +/- 0.04 between the two observations; this corresponds to an exponential decay time 450 +/- 50 days. Detailed fits to image profiles show that this SN's envelope is heavily limb-darkened, and well-characterized by a surface brightness profile that decreases with angular radius. The apparent size of the envelope also varies significantly with wavelength.
