Local well-posedness and singularity formation in non-Newtonian compressible fluids

We investigate the initial value problem of a very general class of 3 + 1 non-Newtonian compressible fluids in which the viscous stress tensor with shear and bulk viscosity relaxes to its Navier–Stokes values. These fluids correspond to the non-relativistic limit of well-known Israel–Stewart-like theories used in the relativistic fluid dynamic simulations of high-energy nuclear and astrophysical systems. After establishing the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, we show for the first time in the literature that there exists a large class of initial data for which the corresponding evolution breaks down in finite time due to the formation of singularities. This implies that a large class of non-Newtonian fluids do not have finite solutions defined at all times.

Probing the van Hove singularity of the kagome metal YV 6 Sn 6 through quantum oscillations

Kagome metals with the Fermi energy tuned near the van Hove singularities (vHss) have shown to host exotic phases including unconventional superconductivity and a chiral flux phase arising from a charge density wave. However, most quantum oscillations studies of the electronic structure of kagome metals focus on compounds which electronically or magnetically order, obscuring the unperturbed vHs. Here we present quantum oscillation measurements of YV 6 ⁢Sn 6 which contains a pristine kagome lattice free from long-range order. We discovered quantum oscillations corresponding to a large orbit (≈70% of the Brillouin Zone area) with the heaviest mass ever observed in vanadium-based kagome metals (≈3.3⁢m e ), consistent with a Fermi pocket whose Fermi level is near the vHs. Comparing with first-principle calculations suggests that the effective mass of this pocket is highly sensitive to the position of Fermi level. Finally, our study establishes the enhanced density of states associated with a vHs in a kagome metal, allowing further insight into a potential driving mechanism for the unconventional electronic orderings in this class of materials.

Superconducting penetration depth through a Van Hove singularity: Sr 2 ⁢RuO 4 under uniaxial stress

A plethora of experiments in Sr 2 RuO 4 have reached conflicting conclusions about the symmetry of the superconducting gap. To probe the gap’s structure in k-space, we use strain to continuously tune the band structure through a Van Hove singularity (VHS) while imaging the superconductivity with scanning SQUID microscopy. We find that the superfluid density peaks at the VHS and that the temperature dependence of the penetration depth is T 2 -quadratic over the entire measured range of strain ε. These results are consistent with a gap structure that has vertical line nodes, experimentally confirming that non-local effects in the Meissner screening can lead to T 2 behavior and clarifying the nature of the low-energy excitations in Sr 2 RuO 4 .

Quasinormal modes of naked singularities in presence of nonlinear scalar fields

We study linear perturbations against static spherically symmetric background configurations of general relativity with a real scalar field (SF), which is minimally coupled with gravity; it is nonlinear due to the presence of the self-action potential. The background solutions have a naked singularity at the center of the configuration. The focus is on the stability of the background and fundamental frequencies of the quasinormal modes (QNM) of the axial perturbations in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. The problem is reduced to one hyperbolic master equation with an effective potential 𝑊eff, which turns out to be positive for a general non-negative SF potential; this ensures the linear stability with respect to this kind of perturbations. For numerical simulations, the SF potential was chosen in the power-law form 𝑉⁡(𝜙) ∼ 𝜙 2⁢𝑛 with 2 < 𝑛 ≤40. We extracted the fundamental frequencies of QNM for different 𝑛 and various sets of the background configuration parameters. The results show that even for a small background SF, there is a significant difference between the fundamental frequencies and ones in case of the Schwarzschild background. Furthermore, the results are also compared with the case of the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour background dealing with a massless linear scalar field.

Tunable Van Hove Singularity without Structural Instability in Kagome Metal $CsTi_{3}Bi_{5}$

In kagome metal $CsV_{3}Sb_{5}$, multiple intertwined orders are accompanied by both electronic and structural instabilities. These exotic orders have attracted much recent attention, but their origins remain elusive. The newly discovered $CsTi_{3}Bi_{5}$ is a Ti-based kagome metal to parallel $CsV_{3}Sb_{5}$. Here, in this work, we report angle-resolved photoemission experiments and first-principles calculations on pristine and Cs-doped $CsTi_{3}Bi_{5}$ samples. Our results reveal that the van Hove singularity (vHS) in $CsTi_{3}Bi_{5}$ can be tuned in a large energy range without structural instability, different from that in $CsV_{3}Sb_{5}$. As such, $CsTi_{3}Bi_{5}$ provides a complementary platform to disentangle and investigate the electronic instability with a tunable vHS in kagome metals.

Synchrophasor Data Compression Under Disturbance Conditions via Cross-Entropy-Based Singular Value Decomposition

The increasing deployment of phasor measurement units and the advances of their reporting rates are challenging the present data centers in terms of storing and analyzing large-volume data. Under power system disturbance conditions, it is difficult to retain critical information while compressing the synchrophasor data effectively. This article combines the cross entropy and the singular value decomposition, proposing a novel model to compress the synchrophasor data to an extremely small size yet keep superior accuracy. The proposed model is extensively tested and compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms using the simulated and the FNET/GridEye field-collected data. The result indicates that the proposed algorithm has superior performance in compressing the data while retaining critical information under disturbance conditions.

Control Design of Series-connected PV-powered Grid-forming Converters via Singular Perturbation

We report modular architectures that consist of several series-connected dc-ac converters have been a focal point of recent innovations in transformerless medium-voltage applications. In this paper, we consider an architecture consisting of dc-ac modules containing a quadruple active bridge dc-dc converter, which generates three floating dc links that feed grid-side dc-ac inverters. Practical implementation of such a converter module in PV systems requires a variety of controllers that collectively achieve maximum power point tracking, dc-link regulation, and ac-side power control. Design of such multi-loop systems is generally quite challenging due to the potential for destabilizing interactions among loops. Here we propose a design approach where singular perturbation theory is used to decompose the timescales at which each control loop operates and provides a systematic framework for parametric selection. Our approach also ensures system stability of multiple modules with identical controls connected in series across a grid. The paper concludes with experimental results of three 1000 W series-connected converter modules across a stiff grid.

Singular Perturbation-Based Large-Signal Order Reduction of Microgrids for Stability and Accuracy Synthesis With Control

The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) highlights the growing importance of microgrids (MGs) in enhancing power system reliability. Employing electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis in MGs becomes crucial for controlling the rapid transients. However, this requires an accurate but high-order model of power electronics and their underlying control loops, complexifying the stability analysis from the viewpoint of a higher control level. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a large-signal order reduction (LSOR) method for MGs with considerations of external control inputs and the detailed dynamics of underlying control levels based on singular perturbation theory (SPT). Specially, we innovatively proposed and strictly proved a general stability and accuracy assessment theorem that allows us to analyze the dynamic stability of a full-order nonlinear system by only leveraging our derived reduced-order model (ROM) and boundary layer model (BLM). Furthermore, this theorem furnishes a set of conditions that determine the accuracy of the developed ROM. Lastly, by embedding such a theorem into the SPT, we propose a novel LSOR approach with guaranteed accuracy and stability analysis equivalence. Case studies are conducted on MG systems to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Singular Hall Response from a Correlated Ferromagnetic Flat Nodal‐Line Semimetal

Abstract Topological quantum phases are largely understood in weakly correlated systems, which have identified various quantum phenomena, such as the spin Hall effect, protected transport of helical fermions, and topological superconductivity. Robust ferromagnetic order in correlated topological materials particularly attracts attention, as it can provide a versatile platform for novel quantum devices. Here, a singular Hall response arising from a unique band structure of flat topological nodal lines in combination with electron correlation in a van der Waals ferromagnetic semimetal, Fe 3 GaTe 2 , with a high Curie temperature ofT c = 347 K is reported. High anomalous Hall conductivity violating the conventional scaling, resistivity upturn at low temperature, and a large Sommerfeld coefficient are observed in Fe 3 GaTe 2 , which implies heavy fermion features in this ferromagnetic topological material. The scanning tunneling microscopy, circular dichroism in angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations support the original electronic features of the material. Thus, low‐dimensional Fe 3 GaTe 2 with electronic correlation, topology, and room‐temperature ferromagnetic order appears to be a promising candidate for robust quantum devices.

Modeling interval trendlines: Symbolic singular spectrum analysis for interval time series

Abstract In this article we propose an extension of singular spectrum analysis for interval‐valued time series. The proposed methods can be used to decompose and forecast the dynamics governing a set‐valued stochastic process. The resulting components on which the interval time series is decomposed can be understood as interval trendlines, cycles, or noise. Forecasting can be conducted through a linear recurrent method, and we devised generalizations of the decomposition method for the multivariate setting. The performance of the proposed methods is showcased in a simulation study. We apply the proposed methods so to track the dynamics governing the Argentina Stock Market (MERVAL) in real time, in a case study over a period of turbulence that led to discussions of the government of Argentina with the International Monetary Fund.

Singular limits in STU supergravity

Abstract We analyse the STU sectors of the four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravities with gauge groups SO(8), SO(6) ⋉ ℝ 12 and [SO(6) × SO(2)] ⋉ ℝ 12 , and construct new domain-wall black-hole solutions inD= 4. The consistent Kaluza-Klein embedding of these theories is obtained using the techniques of Exceptional Field Theory combined with the 4dtensor hierarchies, and their respective uplifts intoD= 11 and type IIB supergravities are connected through singular limits that relate the different gaugings.

6D anomaly-free matter spectrum in F-theory on singular spaces

In this paper we study the 6d localized charged matter spectrum of F-theory directly on a singular elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-fold, i.e. without smoothing via resolution or deformation of the entire fibration. Given only the base surface, discriminant locus, and the SL(2, $\mathbb{Z}$) local system, we propose a general prescription for determining the charged matter spectrum localized at intersections of seven-branes, using the technology of string junctions. More precisely, at each codimension-2 collision of seven-branes, we determine the local seven-brane content and compute the number of massless string junctions modulo the action of the SL(2,$\mathbb{Z}$) monodromy. We find agreement with the predicted results from 6d anomaly cancellation in all cases considered. Examples include a generic Weierstrass model with arbitrary Kodaira fiber intersecting an I 1 , as well as cases with jointly charged matter localized at intersections of non-abelian seven-branes.

Effects of final state interactions on Landau singularities

In certain kinematic and particle mass configurations, triangle singularities may lead to line-shapes which mimic the effects of resonances. This well-known effect is scrutinized here in the presence of final-state rescattering. The goal is achieved first by utilizing general arguments provided by Landau equations, and second by applying a modern scattering formalism with explicit two- and three-body unitarity.

Data-driven acceleration of thermal radiation transfer calculations with the dynamic mode decomposition and a sequential singular value decomposition

In this work, we present a method for accelerating discrete ordinates radiative transfer calculations for radiative transfer. Our method works with nonlinear positivity fixes, in contrast to most acceleration schemes. The method is based on the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and using a sequence of rank-one updates to compute the singular value decomposition needed for DMD. Using a sequential method allows us to automatically determine the number of solution vectors to include in the DMD acceleration. We present results for slab geometry discrete ordinates calculations with the standard temperature linearization. Compared with positive source iteration, our results demonstrate that our acceleration method reduces the number of transport sweeps required to solve the problem by a factor of about 3 on a standard diffusive Marshak wave problem, a factor of several thousand on a cooling problem where the effective scattering ratio approaches unity, and a factor of 20 improvement in a realistic, multimaterial radiating shock problem.

The LHCb state $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) as a triangle singularity

We present a model for the J/ψ Λ spectrum in B – → J/ψ Λ $\bar{p}$ decays, including the $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) baryon recently observed by the LHCb collaboration. We assume production via triangle diagrams which couple to the final state via non-perturbative interactions which are constrained by heavy- quark and SU 3 -flavor symmetry. The bulk of the distribution is described by a triangle diagram with a color-favored electroweak vertex, while the sharp $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) enhancement is due to the ψs triangle singularity in another diagram featuring a 1/2 – baryon consistent with Σ c (2800). We predict a comparable $P^{Λ}_{ψs}$(4338) signal in η c Λ, and anticipate possible large isospin mixing effects ψs through decays to J/ψ Σ 0 and η c Σ 0 .

Discovery of a weak topological insulating state and van Hove singularity in triclinic RhBi2

Abstract Time reversal symmetric (TRS) invariant topological insulators (TIs) fullfil a paradigmatic role in the field of topological materials, standing at the origin of its development. Apart from TRS protected strong TIs, it was realized early on that more confounding weak topological insulators (WTI) exist. WTIs depend on translational symmetry and exhibit topological surface states only in certain directions making it significantly more difficult to match the experimental success of strong TIs. We here report on the discovery of a WTI state in RhBi 2 that belongs to the optimal space group P $$\bar{1}$$ 1 ¯ , which is the only space group where symmetry indicated eigenvalues enumerate all possible invariants due to absence of additional constraining crystalline symmetries. Our ARPES, DFT calculations, and effective model reveal topological surface states with saddle points that are located in the vicinity of a Dirac point resulting in a van Hove singularity (VHS) along the (100) direction close to the Fermi energy ( E F ). Due to the combination of exotic features, this material offers great potential as a material platform for novel quantum effects.

A unique van Hove singularity in kagome superconductor CsV 3-x Ta x Sb 5 with enhanced superconductivity

Van Hove singularity (VHS) has been considered as a driving source for unconventional superconductivity. A VHS in two-dimensional (2D) materials consists of a saddle point connecting electron-like and hole-like bands. In a rare case, when a VHS appears at Fermi level, both electron-like and hole-like conduction can coexist, giving rise to an enhanced density of states as well as an attractive component of Coulomb interaction for unconventional electronic pairing. However, this van Hove scenario is often destroyed by an incorrect chemical potential or competing instabilities. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we report the observation of a VHS perfectly aligned with the Fermi level in a kagome superconductor CsV 3-x Ta x Sb 5 (x~ 0.4), in which a record-high superconducting transition temperature is achieved among all the current variants of AV 3 Sb 5 (A = Cs, Rb, K) at ambient pressure. Doping dependent measurements reveal the important role of van Hove scenario in boosting superconductivity, and spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy measurements indicate a distinct superconducting state in this system.

Uniaxial strain tuning of charge modulation and singularity in a kagome superconductor

Tunable quantum materials hold great potential for applications. Of special interest are materials in which small lattice strain induces giant electronic responses. The kagome compounds AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a testbed for electronic tunable states. In this study, through angle-resolved photo- emission spectroscopy, we provide comprehensive spectroscopic measure- ments of the electronic responses induced by compressive and tensile strains on the charge-density-wave (CDW) and van Hove singularity (VHS) in CsV 3 Sb 5 . We observe a tripling of the CDW gap magnitudes with ~ 1% strain. Simulta- neously, changes of both energy and mass of the VHS are observed. Combined, this reveals an anticorrelation between the unconventional CDW order para- meter and the mass of the VHS, and highlight the role of the latter in the superconducting pairing. The substantial electronic responses uncover a rich strain tunability of the versatile kagome system in studying quantum inter- plays under lattice variations.
