Novel deuterium–tritium (DT) neutron activation diagnostics for increased neutron yield operations at Sandia’s Z-facility (invited)

As inertial confinement fusion experiments at Sandia National Laboratories’ Z-facility begin using deuterium–tritium (DT) fuels, the expected DT-neutron yields are expected to increase many orders of magnitude. This brings about the need for diagnostics that have a significantly higher dynamic range of operation and ability to obtain yields where there will be significant radiation holds. Using the current activation diagnostic infrastructure at the Z-facility, a pair of activation diagnostics are being developed. Here, the first is fluorine activation, which will be used in a similar manner to current copper activation diagnostics that are fielded in a rabbit for quick removal from the experiments without opening the vacuum experiment containment. The second is a prompt DT-neutron detector that exploits the activation of oxygen with similar operation characteristics as the current Be-probes fielded at Z. We will discuss the design of this pair of instruments, along with calibration work performed at Sandia’s Ion Beam Laboratory in support of the development and anticipated instrument performance.

CSP Design Study for Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base

This report provides a design study to produce 100% carbon-free electricity for Sandia NM and Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) using concentrating solar power (CSP). CSP plant designs of 50 MW and 100 MW are assessed to meet the electricity needs of Sandia NM and/or KAFB. Probabilistic modeling is performed to evaluate inherent uncertainties in performance and cost parameters on total construction costs and the levelized cost of electricity. Estimated annual electricity production was ~200 – 300 GWh for the 50 MW plant and ~400 – 700 GWh for the 100 MW plant. The overnight construction costs ranged between ~$300M - $400M for the 50 MW CSP plant and between ~$500M - $800M for the 100 MW CSP plant. The heliostat field was the most significant subsystem cost, followed by the thermal energy storage, power cycle, and fixed operation and maintenance costs. Other considerations such as land availability and permitting, funding options, and interconnections are discussed.

Transient dynamics capability at Sandia National Laboratories

A brief overview of the transient dynamics capabilities at Sandia National Laboratories, with an emphasis on recent new developments and current research is presented. In addition, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Engineering Analysis Code Access System (SEACAS), which is a collection of structural and thermal codes and utilities used by analysts at SNL, is described. The SEACAS system includes pre- and post-processing codes, analysis codes, database translation codes, support libraries, Unix shell scripts for execution, and an installation system. SEACAS is used at SNL on a daily basis as a production, research, and development system for the engineering analysts and code developers. Over the past year, approximately 190 days of CPU time were used by SEACAS codes on jobs running from a few seconds up to two and one-half days of CPU time. SEACAS is running on several different systems at SNL including Cray Unicos, Hewlett Packard PH-UX, Digital Equipment Ultrix, and Sun SunOS. An overview of SEACAS, including a short description of the codes in the system, are presented. Abstracts and references for the codes are listed at the end of the report.

Probabilistic Predictions for Fastener Failure in the Sandia Mechanics Challenge Using the Discrete-Direct Uncertainty Quantification Approach

This paper documents the blind and post-blind analysis predictions for the 2023 Sandia Mechanics Challenge (SMC), which involved predicting the behavior of a threaded fastener joint structure subjected to shock loading. Utilizing repeat sets of fastener calibration data from various experimental configurations including tension, double shear, and joint tension, we developed a library of calibrated models which were propagated through the application model using the Discrete-Direct (DD) uncertainty quantification (UQ) approach. Although the initial blind predictions did not incorporate spare-sample processing to quantify fastener failure probabilities, the analyses yielded reasonable conclusions aligned with experimental results. In the post-blind analysis phase, we focused on enhancing the fidelity of the aluminum constitutive model and innovating the DD approach to obtain probabilistic predictions for fastener failure, particularly when quantities of interest (QoIs) approach their bounds. The improved aluminum model captures the behavior of the cantilever under shock loading more accurately, predicting both partial and complete cracks, although it tends to underpredict failure propagation. The enhanced DD approach facilitates probabilistic predictions that reflect the interdependent failure mechanisms of the fasteners and the cantilever, revealing that while certain fasteners are more likely to fail, the failure does not necessarily follow a progressive pattern. Overall, the post-blind analyses significantly improved the predictive capabilities of the model, providing valuable insights into the SMC application and establishing a robust foundation for informed engineering decisions. The methodology demonstrates a cost-effective and extensible approach suitable for a wide range of applications, highlighting the importance of uncertainty quantification to provide context for engineering decision making.

Aeroelastic Validation of the Sandia Offshore Wind Energy Simulator (OWENS) for Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines

Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have been the subject of research and development for nearly a century. However, this turbine architecture has fallen in and out of favor on multiple occasions. Beginning in the late 1970s, the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored an extensive experimental program through Sandia National Laboratories which produced a mass of experimental data from several highly instrumented turbines. Turbines designed, built, and tested include the 2 meter, 5 meter, 17 meter, and 34 meter and their respective configurations. This program kicked off a commercial collaboration and resulted in the FloWind turbines. The FloWind turbines had several notable design changes from the experimental turbines that, in conjunction with a general lack of understanding regarding predicting fatigue at the time, led to the majority of the turbines failing prematurely during the late 80s.

Reconstitution of Sandia's Melt Laboratory: A Strategic Approach to Address Alloy Procurement and Quality Challenges - Part 1

In recent years, the procurement of essential materials such as Stainless Steels, Ni-Alloys, and Kovar has become increasingly challenging. Lead times for these materials have extended to over 24 months, placing significant stress on the reliability of attaining these alloys. This situation is exacerbated by the supplier’s minimum purchase requirement of excessively large quantities to meet unique purchase order (PO) requirements which is usually above the maximum requirements of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). Additionally, the reluctance of foundries to engage in small lot development for SNL specific needs further complicates the procurement process. This white paper explores the reconstitution of SNL’ Melt Laboratory as a strategic solution to mitigate these challenges.
