Polarization measurements as a probe of axion-photon coupling: A study of GRB 221009A

Axionlike particles (ALPs) can be produced in gamma ray bursts, altering the polarization of the electromagnetic emission in these events. For the first time, we derive bounds on the axion-photon coupling from polarization measurements of GRB 221009A, performing a full calculation of the Stokes parameters, as it is typically done in the astrophysics community. Within astrophysical uncertainties, our limits on the axion-photon coupling are competitive with complementary probes in the axion mass range 10 −9 eV ≲ 𝑚 𝑎 ≲ 10 −8 eV, further allowing to probe motivated parameter space of ALP dark matter.

Search for Axions in Magnetic White Dwarf Polarization at Lick and Keck Observatories

We present the most sensitive search to date for light axion-like particles with masses below a micro-eV, using spectropolarimetric data collected from the Lick and Keck Observatories. The conversion of optical photons emitted from the surface of a magnetic white dwarf (MWD) into axions in the strong magnetic field around the star induces a nearly wavelength-independent linear polarization in the observed starlight. We analyze the Stokes parameters $(U, Q, I)$ measured with the Kast spectrograph at the Lick Observatory toward the MWDs SDSS J033320+000720 and ZTF J190132+145807, and with the LRISp-ADC instrument at the Keck Observatory toward ZTF J190132+145807, SDSS J002129+150223, and SDSS J100356+053825 to search for this effect. The data show no evidence of axion-induced linear polarization, and we set world-leading constraints on the axion-photon coupling $|g_{aγγ}| \lesssim 1.7 \times 10^{-12} \,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ at the $95\%$ confidence level for masses $m_a \lesssim 2 \times 10^{-7}\,\mathrm{eV}$.

Solar system applications of Mie theory and of radiative transfer of polarized light

A theory of the multiple scattering of polarized light is discussed using the doubling method of van de Hulst. The concept of the Stokes parameters is derived and used to develop the form of the scattering phase matrix of a single particle. The diffuse reflection and transmission matrices of a single scattering plane parallel atmosphere are expressed as a function of the phase matrix, and the symmetry properties of these matrices are examined. Four matrices are required to describe scattering and transmission. The scattering matrix that results from the addition of two identical layers is derived. Using the doubling method, the scattering and transmission matrices of layers of arbitrary optical thickness can be derived. The doubling equations are then rewritten in terms of their Fourier components. Computation time is reduced since each Fourier component doubles independently. Computation time is also reduced through the use of symmetry properties.

Gyrosynchrotron radiation and its transfer in a magnetoactive plasma.

Gyrosynchrotron radiation fields from mildly relativistic electrons in a magnetoactive plasma are asymptotically calculated by using the Green tensor and the Fourier transformation. These fields consist of the two components which correspond to the ordinary and extraordinary modes. Taking into account these fields, the emissivities and the absorption coefficients from an arbitrary distribution of electrons are calculated in order to discuss the intensity, spectrum, and polarization of gyrosynchrotron radiation. In general, the transfer of electromagnetic energy takes place along a direction different from that of the wave normal since the radiation fields have a nonvanishing component along the direction of the wave normal. A consideration is given on the problem of radiative transfer in relation to the Stokes parameters.

Polarization of gravitational synchrotron radiation.

Development of a method of analysis of gravitational polarization in terms of Stokes parameters similar to those used for the electromagnetic case. Analytical expressions for these parameters are obtained for the gravitational synchrotron radiation corresponding to the Schwarzschild black-hole model. It is shown that interference between odd- and even-parity terms makes a significant contribution to the angular dependence of the polarization.

Interferometric spectropolarimetry - Alternate experimental methods.

Three alternate methods of obtaining spectra of the intensity and state of polarization of light are proposed. The methods make use of a two-beam amplitude division interferometer using the technique of Fourier spectroscopy. They do not require the presence of polarizers in the arms of the instrument. In one method a single analyzer is used in front of the detector with three successive orientations of its transmission axis azimuth. In another method, a (linear) polarizer assuming the same set of orientations is placed in the incident beam. A third method, a hybrid of the former two methods, makes use of both a polarizer and analyzer in the locations indicated. The first method permits the determination of all four Stokes parameters of polarization, whereas the other two methods cannot yield the ellipticity parameter. All methods require the recording of three interferograms. However, two interferograms can provide the intensity and degree of polarization in any of the methods described.

Investigation of Atmospheric Effects in Image Transfer

Several computations on radiation emerging from the atmosphere for different aerosol models have been performed and the reflection matrix of a given surface was defined by incident light signature analyses. A two channel polarimeter is being constructed for measuring the Stokes parameters of reflected light. Surface albedo measurements were made in six wavelength ranges in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectral regions for six different vegetated surfaces, four soil surfaces, and two roadway surfaces. The effects of polarization changes on the intensity of projected images were studied by using a rotatable polarizer in front of an aerial camera lens.

Principles and techniques of polarimetric mapping.

This paper introduces the concept and potential value of polarimetric maps and the techniques for generating these maps in operational remote sensing. The application-oriented polarimetric signature analyses in the literature are compiled, and several optical models are illustrated to bring out requirements of a sensor system for polarimetric mapping. By use of the concepts of Stokes parameters the descriptive specification of one sensor system is refined. The descriptive specification for a multichannel digital photometric-polarimetric mapper is based upon our experience with the present single channel device which includes the generation of polarimetric maps and pictures. High photometric accuracy and stability coupled with fast, accurate digital output has enabled us to overcome the handicap of taking sequential data from the same terrain.

Nomenclature of polarized light - Elliptical polarization

Alternative handedness and sign conventions for relating the orientation of elliptical polarization are discussed. The discussion proceeds under two headings: (1) snapshot picture, where the emphasis for the convention is contained in the concept of handedness; and (2) angular momentum consideration, where the emphasis for the convention is strongly associated with mathematical convention and the sign of the fourth Stokes parameter.

Descriptions of the polarization states of vector processes - Applications to ULF magnetic fields

In recent years a wide variety of methods has been used to describe the polarization characteristics of ULF (.001 to 1 Hz) magnetic fields. This paper gives a detailed outline of some of the descriptions derived from the spectral matrices of n-variate stochastic processes. The matrices are expanded in three different, standard sets of matrices in order to add some simplification to the interpretation of the polarizations. One set is composed of n-squared trace-orthogonal, hermitean matrices and leads directly to a generalization of the Stokes parameters and the degree of polarization for n-variate processes. The second set is developed from the dyad expansion, which in particular cases is analogous to the spectral decomposition of the matrix. The third set is composed of n commuting idempotent matrices and proves to be the most useful set when the stochastic process is not strictly polarized.

Individual pulse polarization properties of three pulsars

Both average and individual pulse polarization measurements at 430 MHz are presented for three pulsars: PSR 0823 + 26, PSR 0834 + 06, and PSR 2303 + 30. In each case, the average Stokes parameter waveformes are found to depend on the individual pulse polarization properties in a complicated manner. The average waveforms are in general depolarized by pulse-to-pulse fluctuations in polarization state at a given longitude. Two of the three objects exhibit variations of both linear and circular polarization which are associated with quasi-periodic subpulse modulation phenomena in a manner similar to that reported for linear polarization in PSR 0809 + 74 by Taylor et al. (1971.).

Remote detection of soil surface moisture

Polarimetric data concerning soil surface moisture were obtained during a series of flights over the Imperial Valley, California, and Phoenix, Arizona, during March 1972. A polarimeter was installed in NASA's Convair-990 aircraft, Galileo, above a window in the floor of the aft cargo compartment in such a manner that it could view from 42 deg ahead of, to 42 deg to the rear of the nadir. It had a 3 deg field of view and a 10 nm bandwidth centered at 641 nm. The moisture content of the solid surface for fields viewed by the polarimeter was measured by determining the angle through which the light had been scattered by the soil and by observing the degree of polarization of this light produced during its interaction with the soil. The polarimeter measures this degree of polarization in terms of Stokes parameters. Ground-truth samples of soil were obtained at several depths along the flight path.

The polarization of continuum radiation in sunspots. I - Rayleigh and Thomson scattering

Expressions are derived for the Stokes parameters of light scattered by a layer of free electrons and hydrogen atoms in a sunspot. A physically reasonable sunspot model was found so that the direction of the calculated linear polarization agrees reasonably with observations. The magnitude of the calculated values of the linear polarization agrees generally with values observed in the continuum at 5830 A. Circular polarization in the continuum also accompanies electron scattering in spot regions; however for commonly accepted values of the longitudinal magnetic field, the predicted circular polarization is much smaller than observed.

Computed atmospheric corrections for satellite data

The corrections are presented for the visible and near infrared spectrum. The specifications of earth-atmosphere models are given. Herman's and Dave's methods of computing the four Stokes parameters are presented. The relative differences between the two sets of values are one percent. The absolute accuracy of the computations can be established only by comparisons with measured data. Suitable observations do not yet exist. Nevertheless, comparisons are made between computed and aircraft and satellite measured radiances. Particulates are the principal atmospheric variable in the window bands. They have a large effect on the radiances when the surface reflectivity is low. When the surface reflectivity exceeds 0.1, only absorbing particulates have a large effect on the reflectivity, unless the atmospheric turbidity is high. The ranges of the Multispectral Scanner responses to atmospheric effects are computed.

On the passage of radiation through inhomogeneous, moving media. XII - Polarized waves in a plane, sheared medium

Using the complete set of Maxwell equations, the ray paths and Stokes parameters of a polarized wave are followed which passes through a slab of differentially shearing material of variable refractive index. The polarization state of the signal leaving the top of the slab is related to the polarization state of the initial wave. In general, the two are not the same. These calculations were made to illustrate the point that the polarization properties of observed pulsar signals may be very different from those of the emitted signals due to propagation effects in the differentially shearing magnetospheres that most pulsars are believed to possess. While it is recognized that the precise amount of polarization variations is model dependent, the calculations show that even for simple situations a noticeable polarization variation occurs. Accordingly, the calculations reported here are an educative device: they show that it is, perhaps, unwise to assume that the observed polarization properties of pulsar signals are the same as the emitted signals.

A radiative transfer model for microwave emissions from bare agricultural soils

A radiative transfer model for microwave emissions from bare, stratified agricultural soils was developed to assist in the analysis of data gathered in the joint soil moisture experiment. The predictions of the model were compared with preliminary X band (2.8 cm) microwave and ground based observations. Measured brightness temperatures at vertical and horizontal polarizations can be used to estimate the moisture content of the top centimeter of soil with + or - 1 percent accuracy. It is also shown that the Stokes parameters can be used to distinguish between moisture and surface roughness effects.

The spiral configuration of sunspot magnetic fields

Distributions of circularly and linearly polarized intensities are computed using an analytical magnetic field model for an isolated sunspot, and these intensity distributions are compared with observed intensities in all Stokes parameters in the 5250-A line measured with the Marshall Space Flight Center's vector magnetograph. The qualitative agreement between measured and calculated linearly polarized intensity distributions is discussed with regard to implications as to the configuration of the transverse magnetic field of the isolated sunspot.
