Forebody and vertical stabilizer effects on directional stability of a reusable LOX/RP (061) booster AR 12161-2

Results are presented of a wind tunnel test on the directional stability of space shuttle booster configurations. The test was conducted at the 14-inch trisonic tunnel starting 6 December 1971 and continued through 11 December 1971 for a total of 66 occupancy hours. Configurations tested included a cylindrical body with two axisymmetrical noses, one with and without canopy, one delta wing, located in two positions, five vertical tails (including a V tail), two having split rudders, ventral fins, two sets of chines, three airbreathing engine pods, and rocket engine shrouds. The model scale was 0.003366.

A parametric study of planform and aeroelastic effects on aerodynamic center, alpha- and q- stability derivatives. Appendix A: A computer program for calculating alpha- and q- stability derivatives and induced drag for thin elastic aeroplanes at subsonic and supersonic speeds

The computer program used to determine the rigid and elastic stability derivatives presented in the summary report is listed in this appendix along with instructions for its use, sample input data and answers. This program represents the airplane at subsonic and supersonic speeds as (a) thin surface(s) (without dihedral) composed of discrete panels of constant pressure according to the method of Woodward for the aerodynamic effects and slender beam(s) for the structural effects. Given a set of input data, the computer program calculates an aerodynamic influence coefficient matrix and a structural influence coefficient matrix.

Research study on stabilization and control. Modern sampled-data control theory: Stability analysis of the low cost large space telescope system

The pointing stability of the low-cost large space telescope (LST) system was investigated. The low-cost LST is characterized by the use of reaction wheels for the generation of control torques. Because of the critical requirement on the pointing accuracy of the LST, the nonlinear frictional characteristics of the bearings of the reaction wheels were studied which can cause limit cycles in a closed-loop system. Another possible source of pointing error in the LST is due to the effect of quantization and sensor noise. Since the LST is a digital system, digital to analog and analog to digital converters and sensors for positional and rate feedbacks were used. Sensor noise and amplitude quantization causes pointing error in the LST and, in addition, quantization is a nonlinear phenomenon which can cause self-sustained oscillations in the closed-loop system. The dynamic modeling of the single-axis LST is described, and several methods of evaluating the attitude error of the digital LST due to quantization and noise inputs are given.

Nonparallel stability of three-dimensional compressible boundary layers. Part 1: Stability analysis

A compressible linear stability theory is presented for nonparallel three-dimensional boundary-layer flows, taking into account the normal velocity component as well as the streamwise and spanwise variations of the basic flow. The method of multiple scales is used to account for the nonparallelism of the basic flow, and equations are derived for the spatial evolution of the disturbance amplitude and wavenumber. The numerical procedure for obtaining the solution of the nonparallel problem is outlined.

Picosecond flash spectroscopic studies on ultraviolet stabilizers and stabilized polymers

Spectroscopic and excited state decay kinetics are reported for monomeric and polymeric forms of ultraviolet stabilizers in the 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-benzotriazole and 2-hydroxybenzophenone classes. For some of these molecules in various solvents at room temperature, (1) ground state absorption spectra, (2) emission spectra, (3) picosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra, (4) ground state absorption recovery kinetics, (5) emission kinetics, and (6) transient absorption kinetics are reported. In the solid state at low temperatures, emission spectra and their temperature dependent kinetics up to approximately 200K as well as, in one case, the 12K excitation spectra of the observed dual emission are also reported.

The effect of a gap between elevator and stabilizer on the static stability and maneuverability about the lateral axis in flight

A number of German airplanes have a gap between elevator and stabilizer. The effect of this open space is not generally known, although English wind-tunnel experiments have shown that even a very small gap exerts a profound influence on the elevator action. The purpose of the present free-flight measurements is to ascertain whether fairing over the gap would actually result in an appreciable improvement.

Numerical simulation of stability and stability control of high speed compressible rotating couette flow

The nonlinear temporal evolution of disturbances in compressible flow between infinitely long, concentric cylinders is investigated through direct numerical simulations of the full, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations. Counter-rotating cylinders separated by wide gaps are considered with supersonic velocities of the inner cylinder. Initially, the primary disturbance grows exponentially in accordance with linear stability theory. As the disturbances evolve, higher harmonics and subharmonics are generated in a cascading order eventually reaching a saturation state. Subsequent highly nonlinear stages of the evolution are governed by the interaction of the disturbance modes, particularly the axial subharmonics. Nonlinear evolution of the disturbance field is characterized by the formation of high-shear layers extending from the inner cylinder towards the center of the gap in the form of jets similar to the ejection events in transitional and turbulent wall-bounded shear flows.

An Investigation of the Aerodynamic Characteristics of an 0.08-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 Airplane in the Langley High-Speed 7- by 10-Foot Tunnel. Part I - Basic Longitudinal Stability Characteristics, TED No. NACA DE308: Basic Longitudinal Stability Characteristics, TED No. NACA DE308 - Part 1

The stability and control characteristics of an 0.08-scale model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 airplane have been investigated over a Mach number range from 0.40 to 0.91. Results of the basic longitudinal tests of the complete model with undeflected control surfaces are given in the present report with a very limited analysis of the results.
