Spacecraft battery reconditioning cost considerations

Cost considerations for spacecraft battery reconditioning are studied. Results indicate that the cost of performing reconditioning is minuscule compared with spacecraft system investment. Results also indicate that spacecraft life extension of a few days justifies incorporation of reconditioning circuitry.

Qualification Progress and Mission-Enabling Capabilities of the 12-kW Hall-Effect, Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) Thruster

An update of the 12 kW Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) qualification and flight thruster status is provided. Three flight thrusters completed acceptance testing in 2025 and have been delivered to NASA. Environmental qualification is complete and preparations are under way for long-duration life-demonstration testing. Programmatic lessons learned associated with risk management, contract oversight, and requirement definition during the fabrication and assembly are discussed. In addition, the extensibility of the AEPS thruster to enable a variety of NASA missions is presented.

Three flight thrusters completed acceptance testing in 2025 and have been delivered to NASA. Environmental qualification is complete and preparations are under way for long-duration life-demonstration testing. A brief overview of three of SEP’s programmatic lessons learned are discussed: risk management, contract oversight, and requirement definition. In addition, the extensibility of the AEPS thruster to enable a variety of NASA missions is presented.

Power Optimal Control Allocation for Distributed Electric Propulsion in a Series/Parallel Hybrid Powertrain

This paper describes a thrust allocation scheme that minimizes power consumption in an electrified powertrain with Distributed Electric Propulsion. It takes advantage of an observation about component efficiency maps, that efficiency is often highest at high torque/high speed conditions. This optimal approach is demonstrated to satisfy total thrust and net yaw axis torque requirements, making it suitable for utilizing differential thrust for maneuvering.

A Design Solution to the Spacecraft Look-Angle Problem

As the state of the art of the design of spacecraft has progressed, one of the difficult problems which has arisen is the positioning and articulating of spacecraft elements which must “see” in different directions without interference. Some of these elements are: solar panels or collectors, Sun sensors, communication antennas, star seekers, planet tracking and scanning devices, rocket motors, attitude-control jets, and scientific instruments. This Report presents a method of testing a spacecraft design to determine how well it satisfies these look-angle requirements. This method is applied to both simple and complex cases, and examples of its use are presented. A means of assessing spacecraft constraints on trajectories is discussed. The method was developed for the Mariner interplanetary spacecraft, but should be applicable to other cases.
