Low cost space power generation

The success of this study has given a method of fabricating durable copolymer films without size limitations. Previously, only compression molded samples were durable enough to generate electrical energy. The strengthened specimens are very long lived materials. The lifetime was enhanced at least a factor of 1,300 in full pyroelectric conversion cycle experiments compared with extruded, non-strengthened film. The new techniques proved so successful that the lifetime of the resultant copolymer samples was not fully characterized. The lifetime of these new materials is so long that accelerated tests were devised to probe their durability. After a total of more than 67 million high voltage electrical cycles at 100 C, the electrical properties of a copolymer sample remained stable. The test was terminated without any detectable degradation to allow for other experiments. One must be cautious in extrapolating to power cycle performance, but 67 million electrical cycles correspond to 2 years of pyroelectric cycling at 1 Hz. In another series of experiments at reduced temperature and electrical stress, a specimen survived over one-third of a billion electrical cycles during nearly three months of continuous testing. The radiation-limited lifetimes of the copolymer were shown to range from several years to millions of years for most earth orbits. Thus, the pyroelectric copolymer has become a strong candidate for serious consideration for future spacecraft power supplies.

The Effect of Variable End of Charge Battery Management on Small-Cell Batteries

Batteries are critical components for spacecraft, supplying power to all electrical systems during solar eclipse. These components must be lightweight due to launch vehicle limitations and the desire to fly heavier, more capable payloads, and must show excellent capacity retention with age to support the ever growing durations of space missions. ABSL's heritage Lithium Ion cell, the ABSL 18650HC, is an excellent low mass solution to this problem that has been proven capable of supporting long mission durations. The NASA Glenn Research Center recently proposed and initiated a test to study the effects of reduced end of charge voltage on aging of the ABSL 18650HC and other Lithium Ion cells. This paper presents the testing details, a method to analyze and compare capacity fade between the different cases, and a preliminary analysis of the to-date performance of ABSL s cells. This initial analysis indicates that employing reduced end of charge techniques could double the life capabilities of the ABSL 18650HC cell. Accordingly, continued investigation is recommended, particularly at higher depths of discharge to better assess the method s potential mass savings for short duration missions.

Comparison of Fission Electric Cell Geometries

Comparison has been made of the relative power-to-weight ratios calculated for fission-electric cell reactor power systems based upon cells of plane, cylindrical, and spherical geometry. It is demonstrated that for systems of equal power output, the choice of cell geometry does not greatly affect the total weight of the system.

EFFECT OF SPACE ENVIRONMENT ON PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS

A series of theoretical calculations have been performed concerning inelastic nuclear interactions between incident high energy protons and silicon. The results of these calculations, summarized here, indicate that, above incident proton energies of about 20 Mev, the primary defect production mechanism is inelastic nuclear interactions. Additional evidence is presented which indicates that the defect structures produced by these inelastic nuclear interactions are significantly more complicated than those produced by electron and lower energy proton induced elastic nuclear interactions. Based on these phenomena, it is shown that high energy proton experimental damage data on silicon photovoltaic devices obtained at low illumination intensities cannot be applied directly to spacecraft photovoltaic power supply systems designed to operate at the illumination levels existing in space.
