A Comparison of Evaluation Techniques for in-School Programs vs. Adult-oriented Planetarium Programs

Children in school are familiar with constant testing, and the test is often a gate to a desired goal (e.g., certification of completion of a particular grade level). However, adults in a planetarium setting are often nonchalant about learning in this informal venue, and can be almost offended when asked to complete a test of their knowledge, even when the "test" is called a "survey", the emphasis is on how well the presenter explained the material, and a space-oriented handout is offered as a premium for completing the survey. In this presentation, surveys given during 2019 and early 2020 will be shared, along with answers from the respondents. These will be compared with surveys returned after an in-school presentation. An example question from the planetarium survey, with a few answers follows: "Did you learn anything new from this presentation, and if so, what was it?" Answers included: names of patterns/shapes of collections of stars, star locations, how sun and stars work in southern hemisphere. Future work will involve assessing programming for the planetarium at the University of North Alabama, which is used for college-level students and for the general public. For comparison, identical (or nearly so) surveys will be administered to attendees of Von Braun Astronomical Society's (in Huntsville, Alabama) programs.

Education

The use of continuing adult education

The objectives of the National Space Grant and Fellowship Program include the expansion of space-oriented educational programs beyond the traditional boundaries of university campuses to reach 'non-traditional' students whose personal and professional lives would be enhanced by access to such programs. These objectives coincide with those of the continuing education programs that exist on most university campuses. By utilizing continuing educations resources and facilities, members of the National Space Grant Program can greatly enhance the achievement of program objectives.

The design of a commercial space infrastructure

Space Services and Logistics, Inc. represents the complete engineering design of a technically and financially viable commercial space company. The final proposal offers an economically sound program of space vehicles and systems designed to substantially affect a variety of space markets and produce a vertically integrated structure within the next 20 years. Throughout this design process, particular stress has been placed on attaining the highest possible levels of safety and reliability. The final program financial design requires a considerable initial outlay, but promises a relatively quick return on invested capital, culminating in large annual profits by the end of the 20-year scope of the cost outlook. The overall design has been extensively researched and was primarily driven by the present and near-term projected market demands for services uniquely or competitively offered only by space-oriented operations. Heretofore, available capabilities, rather than these market demands, have determined the degree and type of commercial market access. Removing this limitation through extensive use of modularity and reconfigurability allows the company to gear itself to the market, while still remaining extremely competitive with existing systems. The markets identified as lucrative, and that have governed much of the design requirements, are: low-cost launch services to LEO over a wide range of payload masses and inclinations; upper stage payload delivery from LEO to GEO; manned space operations and human transport to and from orbit; EVA assembly and maintenance of large space structures; satellite servicing and repair by both humans and telerobotic operations; a line of customized satellites designed for extended life and capable of reconfiguration or technology upgrade on orbit; small-scale microgravity experimentation and manufacturing supported by spacecraft retrieval capabilities for experimental specimens and manufactured goods; and a full-range of payload integration, testing, design, and support services before launch and once in orbit.

Enhancement of Earth Resources Technology Satellite /ERTS/ and aircraft imagery using atmospheric corrections.

The studies considered are concerned with the magnitude of the atmospheric effects in multispectral earth resources data taken by satellites and aircraft. The atmospheric effects are present in all space oriented and aerial data even in the so-called atmospheric 'windows' through which all sensors observe the ground. Atmospheric effects are quite varied and depend on several parameters. An atmospheric model developed by Turner et al. (1971) is discussed. The model is applied to the test site, which is located in North Dakota. The results are used to obtain atmospheric correction data for ERTS-1 scanner data.

On visual-vestibular interaction

Experimental evidence is presented regarding visual vestibular interaction, and the results of three studies on the subject are briefly noted. An attempt to put together some of these observations with elementary notions of a visual vestibular interaction program is shown in the form of a flow chart representation of a possible model. This is a nonlinear model in which visual and vestibular influences are linearly weighted when they are in relative agreement but switch to the more believable one when they are in disagreement. A solution to the human space orientation problem is depicted by a schema for optimal subjective orientation based on several sensory modalities.

Conceptual design of an on-board optical processor with components

The specification of components for a spacecraft on-board optical processor was investigated. A space oriented application of optical data processing and the investigation of certain aspects of optical correlators were examined. The investigation confirmed that real-time optical processing has made significant advances over the past few years, but that there are still critical components which will require further development for use in an on-board optical processor. The devices evaluated were the coherent light valve, the readout optical modulator, the liquid crystal modulator, and the image forming light modulator.

Full-coverage film cooling

Transpiration cooling is treated and then full coverage discrete hole injection for three injection orientations. Spacings with pitch to diameter ratios of 5 and 10 are discussed. The array is staggered, with the transverse pitch and the streamwise pitch the same. Results are presented in terms of the Stanton number using the heat transfer coefficient defined in terms of the difference between the wall temperature and the free stream temperature. Two values of Stanton number are provided for each situation: one with the injectant at wall temperature, and the other with the injectant at free stream temperature. These two values are equivalent to knowing the heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic effectiveness. The heat transfer coefficient thus defined is used with the actual wall temperature to and the actual gas temperature to calculate the heat load. The principle of superposition thus invoked is valid exactly when the governing equations are linear.

Conversion of omnidirectional proton fluxes into a pitch angle distribution

The long-term radiation exposures anticipated for astronauts aboard oriented space stations entail consideration of spacecraft mass distribution and the direction of high-energy proton flux. A scheme has been developed for deriving pitch-angle distributions of energetic protons from the omnidirectional fluxes contained in the AP-8 MIN magnetospheric radiation model. A functional form is also presented for expressing the proton pitch-angle distributions at a given energy and L coordinate, as a function of only three parameters.
