Space Charge Dominated Momentum Spread and Compensation Strategies in the Post-Linac Section of Proton Improvement Plan-II at Fermilab

The upcoming Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II), designated for enhancements to the Fermilab accelerator complex, features a Beam Transfer Line (BTL) that channels the beam from the linac exit to the booster. In the absence of longitudinal focusing beyond the superconducting linac, the beam experiences an elevated momentum spread, primarily due to nonlinear space-charge forces, surpassing the allowable limit of 2.1e-4. This study presents a detailed examination of the space-charge-induced momentum spread and outlines mitigative strategies. The investigation includes the fine-tuning of a de-buncher cavity, analyzed in terms of operating frequency, longitudinal location, and gap voltage, under both standard and perturbed beam conditions—specifically accounting for momentum jitter and energy variation. The impact of buncher cavity misalignments on the beam's longitudinal phase space is also assessed. The paper concludes by recommending an optimized cavity configuration to effectively mitigate the observed increase in momentum spread along the BTL.

Space charge dominated momentum spread and compensation strategies in the post-linac section of Proton Improvement Plan-II at Fermilab

The upcoming Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II), designated for enhancements to the Fermilab accelerator complex, features a new 800 MeV superconducting linac and a Beam Transfer Line (BTL) to transport the beam to the existing Booster synchrotron. To mitigate the space charge tune shift associated with a high intensity accumulated beam, the low emittance linac beam is used to paint the ring phase space both transversely and longitudinally. To prevent losses caused by particles injected outside the rf separatrix while painting longitudinal phase space, the momentum spread of the incoming beam should not exceed 2.1 x 10^-4. Detailed simulations showed that due to space charge, the rms momentum spread increases to 4 x 10^-4 while it is transported in the BTL --about twice the allowable limit. In this paper, we outline a mitigation strategy involving a debuncher cavity. We discuss location, operating frequency, and gap voltage under both nominal and perturbed beam conditions, specifically accounting for momentum jitter. The impact of cavity misalignments is also assessed. The paper concludes by recommending an optimized configuration.

Lessons Learned From Evaluation and Mitigation of Space Charging Threat Due to Use of Isolated (Hybrid) Bearings on the Pace Ocean Color Instrument

A high precision, high resolution Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) was developed for the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission which required the use of electrically isolated Hybrid Bearings (silicon nitride balls). While desirable for technical performance of the instrument, this application caused portions of the instrument to become electrically isolated and come under threat of space charging effects from charged particles and the resultant differential charging. An evaluation of the environment, susceptibility of the components, such as bearings and electronics, and mitigation strategies were performed. As part of that process, simulations of the charging environment, analysis of internal mechanism charging and prediction of most likely discharge paths, testing of the bearings for susceptibility as well as resulting damage were performed and analyzed. Additionally, a novel method to deal with charging was developed. Considerations for dealing with electrically isolated mechanisms, results of the above-mentioned efforts as well as lessons learned are presented.

Space-Charge-Limited van der Waals Spin Transistor

Integrating semiconducting and magnetic materials could combine transistorlike operation with nonvolatility and enable architectures such as logic in memory. Here, in this work, we employ correlated electrical transport and scanning nitrogen-vacancy center magnetic imaging to elucidate a spin transistor concept that amalgamates vertical and lateral hopping transport inside a 2D antiferromagnetic semiconductor, mechanistically distinct from vertical tunneling devices. Our device, based on a monolayer-bilayer junction in CrSBr, displays giant, gate-tunable magnetoresistance driven by the dual action of electrostatic doping on space-charge-limited lateral conduction and interlayer exchange coupling. Moreover, we visualize a field-trainable, layer-sharing effect that selects between coherent or domain-wall reversal at the spin-flip transition, enabling multilevel, memristive conductance states. Our layer-dependent space charge mechanism for convergent electrical and magnetic control opens opportunities to address limitations in contemporary computing.

Increased response of the reversal electron attachment detector and modeling of ion space-charge effects

Design and sensitivity tests of a modified version of the so-called reversal electron attachment detector (READ) are presented. The new version uses a spherical cathode capable of emitting higher electron currents. As in the original READ (which used a planar emitter) electrons are focused into an electrostatic mirror which reverses their trajectories. In the reversal region electrons have essentially zero energy and attach to target molecules to form negative ions. The electron gun lens system has been modified using a field and trajectory code with space charge included. Electron trajectories have been calculated for 1-mA current focused into a reversal region of 3.5-mm diameter. The detection limit of the apparatus is approximately 25 times lower than for the original READ. Nonlinearity in the measured signal vs electron current is described by a model in which a spherical ball of ions expands outward with velocity determined by the space-charge force and the initial velocity of ion formation.

Noise of space-charge-limited current in solids is thermal.

The white noise level of space-charge-limited current (SCLC) of holes in a silicon device measured at five temperatures ranging from 113 to 300 K is shown to be proportional to the absolute temperature. This proves experimentally the thermal origin of noise for SCLC in solids.

Thermal noise in space-charge-limited hole current in silicon

Present theories on noise in single-carrier space-charge-limited currents in solids have not been quantitatively substantiated by experimental evidence. To obtain such experimental verification, the noise in specially fabricated silicon structures is being measured and analyzed. The first results of this verification effort are reported.

The effect of space charge fields due to finite length electron beams in the free-electron laser

The space charge electric field of a finite length electron beam in the free electron laser amplifier with a tapered wiggler is analyzed. In the free drift region between the accelerator and laser, expressions for the increase of energy spread due to the self field are presented. In the FEL interaction region, the general conditions on the importance of the self electric field in the equations of motion is obtained. A numerical example of the FEL experiment at 10.6 microns is given.
