Optical filters made from random metasurfaces using Bayesian optimization

Abstract We theoretically investigate the ability to design optical filters from a single material and a single layer of randomly dispersed resonant dielectric particles, defining a random metasurface. Using a Bayesian and generalized Mie inverse-design approach, we design particle radii distributions that give rise to longpass, shortpass, bandpass, and bandstop spectral bands in the infrared. The optical response is shown to be directly related to electric and magnetic multipole scattering of the constituent particles and their near field coupling. We discuss the effect of the particle size distribution and particle–particle coupling interactions on filter design in random systems lacking long-range order.

Signal processing in a randomly time varying system.

Stochastic operators are applied to an analysis of some deterministic systems of signal transformation. The distribution of a random process at the output of a system is given through its distribution at the input and through a stochastic Green's function. A two-point correlation function is derived to obtain a solution to differential equations which contain coefficients, boundary conditions, or right-hand terms representing random processes.

On board satellite processing study

The use of satellite-based, world-wide data collection and location systems for scientific purposes is discussed. The configuration of satellite borne data handling equipment to prevent premature saturation and to provide maximum capacity without degradation of performance is described. An analysis of a data collection and location system based on random time and frequency access to the satellite was conducted. The subjects presented are: (1) a general description of the concept of a random access system, (2) the quantitative characteristics of random access systems, and (3) the development of a model for comparing the various types of digital communications systems.

Random motion analysis of flexible satellite structures

A singular perturbation formulation is used to study the responses of a flexible satellite when random measurement errors can occur. The random variables, at different instants of time, are assumed to be uncorrelated. Procedures for obtaining maxima and minima are described, and a variation of the linear method is developed for the formal solution of the two-point boundary-value problems represented by the variational equations. Random and deterministic solutions for the structural position coordinates are studied, and an analytic algorithm for treating the force equation of motion is developed. Since the random system indicated by the variational equation will always be asymptotically unstable, any analysis of stability must be based on the deterministic system.

Random Access Frame (RAF) System Neutral Buoyancy Evaluations

The Random Access Frame (RAF) concept is a system for organizing internal layouts of space habitats, vehicles, and outposts. The RAF system is designed as a more efficient improvement over the current International Standard Payload Rack (ISPR) used on the International Space Station (ISS), which was originally designed to allow for swapping and resupply by the Space Shuttle. The RAF system is intended to be applied in variable gravity or microgravity environments. This paper discusses evaluations and results of testing the RAF system in a neutral buoyancy facility simulating low levels of gravity that might be encountered in a deep space environment.

Nimbus 6 Random Access Measurement System applications experiments

The advantages of a technique in which data collection platforms randomly transmit signal to a polar orbiting satellite, thus eliminating satellite interrogation are demonstrated in investigations of the atmosphere; oceanographic parameters; Arctic regions and ice conditions; navigation and position location; and data buoy development.

Ordering and phase transitions in random-field Ising systems

An exact analysis of the Ising model with infinite-range interactions in a random field and a local mean-field theory in three dimensions is carried out leading to a phase diagram with several coexistence surfaces and lines of critical points. The results show that the phase diagram depends crucially on whether the distribution of random fields is symmetric or not. Thus, Ising-like phase transitions in a porous medium (the asymmetric case) are in a different universality class from the conventional random-field model (symmetric case).

Transient characteristics of simple systems to modulated random noise.

Discussed are the mean-square response exceedance characteristics of a single-tuned system to amplitude modulated noise. The results bear on the accuracy of spectral estimates of nonstationary data, and subsequently, relate directly to the design, analysis, and testing of structural systems in environments as gusts, earthquakes, and ignition transients. For noise correlated as an exponentially damped cosine, the nonstationary response may exceed its stationary value by a factor in excess of two. A time-varying shaping filter explanation is offered for this behavior. For white noise, such exceedances do not occur.

Performance of random multiple access transmission system

The performance of the Random Multiple Access (RMA) technique, applied to a direct terminal-to-terminal link with a large number of potential users, is determined. The average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived. Under Gaussian assumption, the approximation of the probability of error is given. The analysis shows that the system performance is affected by the sequence length, the number of simultaneous users, and the number of cochannel symbols, but is not sensitive to the thermal noise. The performance of using very small aperture antenna for both transmitting and receiving without a hub station is given.

Application of the locally self-consistent embedding approach to the Anderson model with non-uniform random distributions

Highlights: • Typical Medium Theory (TMT) for the Anderson Localization. • Locally Self-Consistent Multiple Scattering Method (LSMS) for Random Disordered Systems. • Linear Scaling Computational Method for Random Disordered Systems. We apply the recently developed embedding scheme for the locally self-consistent method to random disorder electrons systems. The method is based on the locally self-consistent multiple scattering theory and the typical medium theory. The locally self-consistent multiple scattering theory divides a system into many small designated local interaction zones. The subsystem within each local interaction zone is embedded in a self-consistent field from the typical medium theory. This approximation allows the study of random systems with large numbers of sites. We present results for the three dimensional Anderson model with different random disorder potential distributions. Using the typical density of states as an indicator of Anderson localization, we find that the method can capture the localization for commonly studied disorder potentials. These include the uniform distribution, the Gaussian distribution, and even the unbounded Cauchy distribution.

Analysis of dynamic system response to product random processes

The response of dynamic systems to the product of two independent Gaussian random processes is developed by use of the Fokker-Planck and associated moment equations. The development is applied to the amplitude modulated process which is used to model atmospheric turbulence in aeronautical applications. The exact solution for the system response is compared with the solution obtained by the quasi-steady approximation which omits the dynamic properties of the random amplitude modulation. The quasi-steady approximation is valid as a limiting case of the exact solution for the dynamic response of linear systems to amplitude modulated processes. In the nonlimiting case the quasi-steady approximation can be invalid for dynamic systems with low damping.

Reliability of degrading dynamic systems subject to dynamic random loads

Reliability was determined for two degrading dynamic systems subject to random load processes. Damage is caused by loss of components for Daniels systems and crack extension for plates with cracks. The analysis accounted for the coupling between response and current damage state of the system. It is based on mean crossing rates of conditional processes and properties of diffusion models. Simple systems are used to illustrate proposed methods for estimating reliability.
