Adhesion of Self-Complementary, Sinusoidal Surfaces Fabricated Using Two-Photon Polymerization

Microscale, pick-and-place assembly is a non-lithographic assembly method poised to impact diverse fields including flexible electronics, microfluidics and robotics. However, a major technological challenge is the need to deterministically control adhesion between parts. Here, switchable adhesion involving 3D-printed, self-complementary surfaces is demonstrated. Mechanical properties of metasurfaces pressed against flat, rigid substrates are modeled using finite element methods. A series of flat slabs and metastructured slabs with 2D sinusoidal surfaces are printed using two-photon polymerization (2PP) of a shape-memory resin. The surface frequency of featured slabs was varied between $3.\bar3$ mm −1 and $26.\bar6$ mm −1 with similar amplitudes. Adhesion between printed metasurfaces and glass and between printed, self-complementary metasurfaces is studied above and below the cured resin’s glass transition temperature (∼45 °C). Simple heating of adhering surfaces to above 60 °C lowers adhesion, and compression of surfaces while above the glass transition temperature followed by cooling to room temperature elevates adhesion. The nominal adhesive strength between printed, self-complementary surfaces, as determined by the maximum observable pull-off stress, exceeds 3 MPa. Further tailoring complementary surfaces for adhesion control may facilitate microscale disassembly for recovery of components or precious metals.

One Step Block-like Copolymers from an Upcycled Monomer Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Block-like copolymers can be readily synthesized in one step using monomers with widely separated reactivity ratios. Here, we show that trans,trans,trans-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene (CDT), produced from polybutadiene via cyclodepolymerization (CDP), undergoes gradient copolymerization via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with a selected norbornene monomer to produce a block-like copolymer that exhibits bulk nanophase separation and excellent thermomechanical performance. These data highlight a new ROMP copolymerization system with a sharp compositional drift and introduce a simple pathway to convert waste plastic into a valuable building block for high-value thermoplastic materials.

Revealing the Full Potential of Glycolated Mixed Ionic-Electronic Semiconductors – Symmetric Monomer Polymerization to Boost Electrochemical Transistor Performance

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) enable the transduction of ionic signals into electronic outputs, positioning them as ideal candidates for next-generation sensing and (bio)signal processing applications. Recent years have witnessed the development of various OECT channel materials, affording insights into structural fine-tuning to achieve optimal performance and/or stability. However, homocouplings, commonly present in alternating conjugated polymers, have largely been overlooked. This study investigates the effect of homocoupling on OECT materials by employing two synthesis methods – standard Stille polymerization and an alternative symmetric approach – to create the p-type enhancement-mode benchmark polymer pgBTTT. The impact of homocoupling, and its absence, is studied by comparing the bulk properties of the two polymers and evaluating their respective OECT metrics. The new, homocoupling-free polymer exhibits a notably improved OECT performance ( μC *), mainly due to an average 3-fold increase in electronic mobility (μ).

Positional Isomer of P3HB by Stereoselective Polymerization of Racemic α-Methyl-β-propiolactone Delivers Polyethylene-like Properties

Biobased and biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrolactone) (P3HB) has long been considered as a more sustainable alternative to petroleum-based, nonbiodegradable polyolefins, but its properties are far off from its polyolefin (polyethylene, PE, and polypropylene, PP) counterpart’s unique set of thermal (low T g below −20 °C and high T m > 100 °C) and mechanical (high ductility >350%) characteristics. Here, we report that a positional isomer of P3HB, poly(3-hydroxy-2-methylpropionate) (P3H2MP), synthesized by catalyst-controlled stereoselective polymerization of racemic α-methyl-β-propiolactone, can match that demanding set of thermomechanical properties of PE. In particular, isotactic-rich P3H2MP, readily synthesized under ambient conditions, reaches high M n close to one million Da, T g down to −25 °C, T m up to 115 °C, tensile strength up to 64 MPa, and toughness up to 131 MJ m –3 , thus mechanically outperforming PE while maintaining a comparable low T g and high T m combination. A P3H2MP-based triblock copolymer further widens the low-high temperature window from T g = −29 °C to T m = 186 °C, resembling those of PP. These results show that P3H2MP exhibits the unique combination of thermomechanical properties matching those of high-performance polyolefins.

High‐Rate Polymeric Redox in MXene‐Based Superlattice‐Like Heterostructure for Ammonium Ion Storage

Abstract Achieving both high redox activity and rapid ion transport is a critical and pervasive challenge in electrochemical energy storage applications. This challenge is significantly magnified when using large‐sized charge carriers, such as the sustainable ammonium ion (NH 4 + ). A self‐assembled MXene/n‐type conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) superlattice‐like heterostructure that enables redox‐active, fast, and reversible ammonium storage is reported. The superlattice‐like structure persists as the CPE:MXene ratio increases, accompanied by a linear increase in the interlayer spacing of MXene flakes and a greater overlap of CPEs. Concurrently, the redox activity per unit of CPE unexpectedly intensifies, a phenomenon that can be explained by the enhanced de‐solvation of ammonium due to the increased volume of 3 Å‐sized pores, as indicated by molecular dynamic simulations. At the maximum CPE mass loading (MXene:CPE ratio = 2:1), the heterostructure demonstrates the strongest polymeric redox activity with a high ammonium storage capacity of 126.1 C g −1 and a superior rate capability at 10 A g −1 . This work unveils an effective strategy for designing tunable superlattice‐like heterostructures to enhance redox activity and achieve rapid charge transfer for ions beyond lithium.

Supramolecular Arene‐Perfluoroarene Assembly Enhances Photoiniferter Polymerization Kinetics

Ultra-high-molecular-weight (UHMW, >106 Da) polymers have unique thermomechanical properties due to their large number of physical entanglements. Producing UHMW styrenic polymers is challenging because of their prohibitively slow homopolymerization kinetics. In this report, we show that alternating photoiniferter copolymerization between methoxy-functionalized styrenic monomers and pentafluorostyrene can circumvent this limitation under conditions where arene–perfluoroarene (AP) interactions contribute to favorable monomer association and accelerate copolymerization. Increasing methoxy substitution on the styrene arene ring leads to pronounced rate enhancements that correlate with electronic complementarity between the styrenic comonomers. Density functional theory calculations reveal increasingly favorable AP interaction energies across the series, consistent with monomer association contributing to faster propagation. The result is up to 2000% enhancement in propagation rate in copolymerizations compared to styrene homopolymerization. Despite these rate enhancements, the resulting materials retain broadly similar glass-transition temperatures and network-like thermomechanical behavior, with only modest softening across the series. Here, we then leverage the approach to produce UHMW trialkoxystyrene copolymers bearing sterically encumbered pendants, which are ultrasoft (Young's modulus of 8 kPa) and highly extensible (560%). These results establish that designed supramolecular association between styrenics is a powerful tool for controlling reactivity in radical polymerization and generating otherwise difficult-to-obtain materials.

Crosslinked polymeric ionic liquid stationary phases incorporating a combination of silver(I) and copper(II) ions for olefin separations by gas chromatography

The development of efficient and selective olefin separation technologies is a critical challenge within the chemical industry given the high energy demands of conventional cryogenic distillation methods. To address this, the study explores the effectiveness of polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) stationary phases in gas chromatography (GC) that incorporate both silver(I) ([Ag + ]) and copper(II) ([Cu 2+ ]) ions for enhanced olefin separation via π-complexation interactions. Further, the effects of both non-crosslinked and crosslinked PIL stationary phases containing varying ratios of [Ag⁺] and [Cu²⁺] ions were systematically investigated to evaluate their impact on the separation of olefins from paraffins and structurally similar olefins. Retention measurements using a broad range of olefinic probes revealed that [Ag⁺] ions provided stronger and more consistent π-complexation in PIL-based stationary phases, while [Cu²⁺] ions preferentially enhance olefin retention in crosslinked systems. Furthermore, thermal stability studies showed that [Ag + ]-containing PIL stationary phases maintain stable olefin separation efficiency over prolonged exposure under elevated temperatures, while crosslinked PIL stationary phases containing [Cu 2+ ] ions exhibited stronger retention due to increased surface adsorption. These findings provide insight into the tunability of metal–olefin interactions using PIL-based stationary phases and suggest design strategies for achieving thermally stable and highly selective chromatographic separations of unsaturated hydrocarbons.

A novel polymeric lithicone coating for superior lithium metal anodes

Lithium metal (Li) is commonly regarded as the “holy grail” of rechargeable batteries and can serve as anodes for constituting various high-energy lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, it suffers from two notorious issues: (1) continuous formation of inhomogeneous solid electrolyte interphase and (2) Li dendritic growth. Here, in this study, we developed a novel polymeric lithicone via a new molecular layer deposition (MLD) process, using lithium tert-butoxide (LTB) and hydroquinone (HQ) as precursors. We revealed that such an MLD process enabled the resultant LiHQ to grow linearly in a highly controllable and cyclic mode at a growth rate of 4 Å cycle −1 . Furthermore, its low process deposition temperature of 150 °C made it possible to practice high-quality coatings over Li anodes directly. We demonstrated that, very compellingly, this LiHQ coating could protect Li anodes from corrosion and dendritic growth. As a consequence, this LiHQ coating has enabled Li||Li symmetric cells an extremely long cyclability up to 8000 Li-plating/stripping cycles without failure. More excitingly, we demonstrated that, coupled with LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) cathodes, the LiHQ-modified Li anodes could help the resultant Li||NMC811 realize a much better capacity retention and much longer cyclability. Thus, this study represents a strategic route for developing commercializeable LMBs.

Thin-Film Fracture Behavior for Diketopyrrolopyrrole Semiconducting Polymeric Films

Fracture energy, which quantifies a material’s resistance to the propagation of a pre-existing crack, is a key parameter for ensuring the mechanical reliability of stretchable organic electronic devices. However, most existing methods, such as a four-point bending fracture energy, utilized for measuring the fracture energy of semiconducting polymeric thin films are complicated by substrate effects, making it challenging to isolate the intrinsic behavior of the film from interfacial influences. In this study, we employed a pseudo free-standing pure shear method to systematically investigate the cohesive fracture energy of poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-terthiophene) P(DPP-T)-based thin films to examine the effects of nanoconfinement, side chain length, degree of crystallinity, and strain rates. This method effectively eliminates substrate interference, enabling a direct assessment of the cohesive fracture energy of P(DPP-T) thin films. We found that thinner films and those with lower molecular weights exhibited significantly reduced fracture energies due to diminished chain entanglements. Additionally, films with shorter side chains displayed notably higher fracture energies, which were attributed to an increase in the degree of crystallinity. Finally, slower strain rates led to higher fracture energies, consistent with an enhanced stress relaxation. These insights offer practical guidelines for designing mechanically robust semiconducting polymers, contributing to the advancement of reliable, durable, flexible, and wearable electronic devices.

Tailoring Pore Architecture and Heteroatom Functionality of Polymeric Waste-Derived Nanoporous Carbon for CO 2 Capture Applications

This study proposes upcycling polymeric waste, i.e., waste floral foam, into high-performance nanoporous carbon that efficiently captures CO 2 . This paper presents strategies for improving the properties of nanoporous carbon, which aid in a superior CO 2 capture performance. Initially, pristine nanoporous carbon was produced from waste floral foam using various KOH impregnation ratios. The nanoporous carbon with a 1:2 (waste floral foam:KOH) ratio exhibiting optimal CO 2 capture capability was further advanced through single and dual atom doping. The doping of N and codoping of N,S atoms into the nanoporous carbon altered its textural and surface chemical properties, making them efficient for CO 2 capture. Comparative CO 2 capture studies of pristine nanoporous carbon (NC-x), N-doped nanoporous carbon (N-NC2), and N,S-codoped nanoporous carbon (N,S-NC2) demonstrate the superiority of N-doping. N-doped nanoporous carbon exhibited the largest ultramicroporosity (0.3100 cm3/g, 63.43%) and highest heteroatom content (34.94 atomic %), contributing to its enhanced CO 2 capture capability (4.54 mmol/g). Finally, implementing the “waste-to-depollution” approach, this research lays the groundwork for producing low-cost, environmentally friendly nanoporous carbon with remarkable CO 2 capture attributes.

Theory of Ion-Mediated Segmental Localization, Activated Structural Relaxation, and the Glass Transition in Polymerized Ionic Liquids

Here we combine polymer integral equation theory for structural correlations with a force-level theory for activated segmental relaxation to construct a microscopic theory for how ions modify the onset of segmental localization, the polymer alpha relaxation time, and glass transition temperature, T g , in dry polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs). Our most important findings concerning the behavior of T g are (i) a weak dependence on anion–cation Coulomb attraction strength due to strong decoupling of ion and segmental dynamics, (ii) strong reduction with increasing mobile ion size due to both plasticization effects and weakening of ion-modified monomer caging, and (iii) increase with backbone rigidity and intrachain dynamic cooperativity. We quantitatively estimate T g variations as ion size and polymer static and dynamic rigidity are widely varied. The experimental data of 19 PolyILs are organized into a specific pattern consistent with the theoretical predictions with glass transition temperatures varying over a very wide range (~250 K) as observed experimentally. Based on the theoretical results, suggestions are made concerning the search for high conductivity Li- or Na-based PolyILs based on further lowering of T g via new polymer synthesis. Calculations of the alpha time as a function of packing fraction reveal the dynamic fragility increases for larger mobile ions, a more flexible backbone, and/or a smaller degree of intrachain dynamic cooperativity, as a consequence of the increasing importance of collective elasticity in determining the activation barrier. An analysis of transient segmental localization and a crossover to activated dynamics reveals similar, but not identical, trends as predicted at the laboratory vitrification timescale.

Effects of a Small Fraction of Norbornene Comonomers on the Frontal Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization of Dicyclopentadiene and Dihydrofuran

Frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) is an energy-efficient process for the construction of high performance polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) thermosets. A small fraction of norbornene (NBE) comonomer is often added to DCPD to liquify the resin, but their effects on the resin chemistry and frontal curing characteristics are not quantitatively understood, especially for recently developed deconstructable DCPD resins containing cleavable comonomers. 2,3-Dihydrofuran (DHF) is a commercially available, effective cleavable comonomer for ROMP of norbornenes, and it has been recently demonstrated to enable full deconstruction of pDCPD thermosets at 5% loading. Herein, we investigated deconstructable DCPD resins containing 5% of different (oxa)NBE derivatives and 5% DHF. We report the effects of such a small fraction of (oxa)NBE comonomers on the resin pot life (room temperature resin reactivity), front curing characteristics, degree of cure, crosslinking density, comonomer distribution, and deconstruction kinetics of the resulting pDCPD thermosets. These effects can be correlated to the metathesis reactivity of these comonomers. As a result, this study provides quantitative understanding that will guide the future development of new deconstructable FROMP resins with desired construction and deconstruction characteristics.

Thiol- and Disulfide-Functionalized Polycyclooctene: Metathesis Polymerization, Degradation, and Reformation

The enormous global production and use of polymers and plastics, combined with slower and less efficient disposal and recycling methods, have led to a worldwide growth in plastic waste. Here, we describe an approach that builds degradability into macromolecular polyolefins through the design of telechelic oligomers with reactive functional groups that enables control over polymer deconstruction and reconstruction. Our work exploits disulfide-containing polymers that have emerged as promising cyclable materials due to their dynamic reversibility (bond formation and cleavage) driven by redox chemistry under mild conditions. Specifically, we describe the synthesis of a telechelic α,ω-dithiopolycyclooctene (PCOE) by ring-opening metathesis polymerization using a dithioacetate chain transfer agent, followed by deprotection to convert the chain-end thioacetates to thiols. This process was studied towards control over the degree of oxidation to yield disulfide-containing PCOE, followed by an evaluation of reductive degradation and oxidative repolymerization. Overall, this approach facilitates the production of disulfide-containing unsaturated polyolefins and the integration of degradable and reformable moieties into soluble, processable, metathesis-derived polymers.

Hierarchical Epoxy Structures via Tunable Polymerization-Induced Phase Separation Combined with Additive Manufacturing

Polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) allows for the control of thermoset morphologies and properties, enabling the tuning of domain sizes and thermomechanical response. However, its use in generating substructural features in additively manufactured materials has been limited. In this work, we combine epoxy PIPS with UV curable acrylate and rheological modifiers to print nano- to macro-phase separating materials via a two-step, dual-cure approach. This method enables direct ink write printing of hierarchical structures with both controlled morphologies through phase separation and macroscale architecture through print design. We find that formulations for phase-separating materials require judicious incorporation of additives to enable printability and to provide sufficient green strength. Atomic force microscopy-nano infrared mapping reveals tunable, reticulated nano- to micron-scale domains of the resultant multiphase materials and their morphology changes due to additives, resulting in alterations to thermomechanical and tensile properties. Shape memory behavior is also demonstrated through multimaterial additive manufacturing of epoxies with functionally graded internal morphology using active mixing techniques, highlighting this method’s ability to fabricate complex architectures with controlled morphologies and thermomechanical response.

Observation of a Picosecond Light-Induced Spin Transition in Polymeric Nanorods

Spin transition (ST) materials are attractive for developing photoswitchable devices, but their slow material transformations limit device applications. Size reduction could enable faster switching, but the photoinduced dynamics at the nanoscale remains poorly understood. Here, we report a femtosecond optical pump multimodal X-ray probe study of polymeric nanorods. Simultaneously tracking the ST order parameter with X-ray emission spectroscopy and structure with X-ray diffraction, we observe photodoping of the low-spin–lattice within ~150 fs. Above a ~16% photodoping threshold, the transition to the high-spin phase occurs following an incubation period assigned to vibrational energy redistribution within the nanorods activating the molecular spin switching. Above ~60% photodoping, the incubation period disappears, and the transition completes within ~50 ps, preceded by the elastic nanorod expansion in response to the photodoping. These results support the feasibility of ST material-based GHz optical switching applications.

Using Data Science Tools to Reveal and Understand Subtle Relationships of Inhibitor Structure in Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

The rate of frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) using the Grubbs generation II catalyst is impacted by both the concentration and choice of monomers and inhibitors, usually organophosphorus derivatives. Herein we report a data-science-driven workflow to evaluate how these factors impact both the rate of FROMP and how long the formulation of the mixture is stable (pot life). Using this workflow, we built a classification model using a single-node decision tree to determine how a simple phosphine structural descriptor (V bur-near ) can bin long versus short pot life. Additionally, we applied a nonlinear kernel ridge regression model to predict how the inhibitor and selection/concentration of comonomers impact the FROMP rate. Furthermore, the analysis provides selection criteria for material network structures that span from highly cross-linked thermosets to non-cross-linked thermoplastics as well as degradable and nondegradable materials.

Vinylsilanes as Chain-Transfer Agents in Ethylene Polymerization: Direct Synthesis of Heterotelechelic Polyolefins

A single-step route to heterotelechelic polyethylene is enabled by palladium-diimine-catalyzed polymerization of ethylene using vinylsilanes as chain-transfer agents. The reaction affords α-alkenyl-ω-silyl end-capped heterotelechelic polymers whose molecular weights are controllable over a wide range by adjusting the [ethylene]/[vinylsilane] molar ratios. Notably, highly efficient end-capping with silanes carrying a variety of functionalities can be achieved under the optimized conditions. Furthermore, the alkenyl- and silyl-terminated telechelics serve as polymer precursors for further reactions and can be converted into additional telechelic functionalized polyolefins in good yields.
