In situ polymerization of monomers for polyphenylquinoxaline/graphite

Methods currently used to prepare fiber reinforced, high temperature resistant polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) composites employ extremely viscous, low solids content solutions of high molecular weight PPQ polymers. An improved approach, described in this report, consists of impregnating the fiber with a solution of the appropriate monomers instead of a solution of previously synthesized high molecular weight polymer. Polymerization of the monomers occurs in situ on the fiber during the solvent removal and curing stages. The in situ polymerization approach greatly simplifies the fabrication of PPQ graphite fiber composites. The use of low viscosity monomeric type solutions facilitates fiber wetting, permits a high solids content, and eliminates the need for prior polymer synthesis.

Polyimidazopyrrolone model compounds.

The model reactions between phthalic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine were studied under conditions analogous to the polymerization and post-cyclization of dianhydrides with bis(o-diamines) to form polyimidazopyrrolones (Pyrrones). The route from the initial amide-acid-amine to the tetracyclic Pyrrone model when the reactions are conducted in aprotic solvents is highly competitive between isolatable benzimidazole-acid and imide-amine intermediates. Solid-state thermal conversion of the amide-acid-amine affords a unique dimeric species containing amide, imide, and benzimidazole functions. It was confirmed that melt techniques lead to disproportionation products. The application of these findings to related polymer synthesis is discussed.

Basicity of aromatic amines from liquid chromatographic behavior

A liquid chromatographic investigation was conducted to determine whether the adsorption of weakly basic aromatic amines on slightly acidic silica gel adsorbents could be used to study their relative basicity. Under proper conditions, a linear correlation between pKb and log of capacity factor was observed. This finding may prove useful in helping to predict the relative basicity of closely related aromatic diamines, especially new amines being synthesized for polymer synthesis.

Effect of polymer properties and adherend surfaces on adhesion

The surface properties associated with good adhesive joints were evaluated in terms of application of adhesive bonding in aerospace technology. The physical and chemical nature was determined of Ti and Al adherend surfaces after various surface treatments, and the effects on fracture surfaces of high temperature aging, and variations in amide, anhydride, and solvent during polymer synthesis. The effects were characterized of (1) high temperature during shear strength testing, (2) fiber-reinforced composites as adherends, (3) acid/base nature of adherends, (4) aluminum powder adhesive filler, and (5) bonding pressure.

Thermoplastic/Melt-Processable Polyimides

Several polyimides were prepared which show promise for aircraft composite applications. This was achieved through a systematic polymer synthesis program where the glass transition temperatures were greatly lowered when compared to the older polyimide systems. Several of the materials were shown to be hot-melt processable and are attractive matrix resin candidates especially in light of their high g(sub Ic) values. At least two of these polyimides are available for evaluation and others are on the research horizon.

The triose model - Glyceraldehyde as a source of energy and monomers for prebiotic condensation reactions

Glyceraldehyde acts as a source of energy and monomers in a new model of the origin of life. The simplest form of the model functions by converting formaldehyde from the environment into glyceraldehyde which spontaneously forms hemiacetal adducts that are oxidized to polyglyceric acid. Polyglyceric acid, in turn, acts as an autocatalyst with a rudimentary replicating ability. A unique property of the model is its ability to unite the origin of metabolism and the origin of polymer synthesis into a single process. Furthermore, the chemical resemblance of the model to glycolysis gives it the potential to develop a biological metabolism in a straightforward manner.

Nicalon/siliconoxycarbide ceramic composites

A number of polymers of differing molecular structure, viscosity, copolymer composition, and production procedures, screened for production of strong, tough Nicalon/siliconoxycarbide composites, are discussed. Variables during polymer synthesis include pH, water/methoxy ratio and phenyl/methyl ratio. Final processing temperatures of the composites range from 1200 deg to 1400 deg C. The filler is derived from pyrolysis of the 50 phenyl/50 methyl silsesquioxane copolymer pyrolyzed to 650 deg C, then milled to less than 1-micron powder. Composite samples were fractured to evaluate the influence of matrix composition, final fabrication temperature, and use of filler on the composite mode of failure, modulus, strain capability, and strength. Incorporation of filler was found to increase matrix compressive strength and to influence matrix shrinkage and cracking.

Molecules with enhanced electronic polarizabilities based on defect-like states in conjugated polymers

Highly conjugated organic polymers typically have large non-resonant electronic susceptibilities, which give the molecules unusual optical properties. To enhance these properties, defects are introduced into the polymer chain. Examples include light doping of the conjugated polymer and synthesis, conjugated polymers which incorporate either electron donating or accepting groups, and conjugated polymers which contain a photoexcitable species capable of reversibly transferring its electron to an acceptor. Such defects in the chain permit enhancement of the second hyperpolarizability by at least an order of magnitude.

Prebiotic polymerization: Oxidative polymerization of 2, 3-dimercapto-1-propanol on the surface of iron(III) hydroxide oxide

The oxidation of 2, 3-dimercapto-1-propanol by ferric ions on the surface of iron(III) hydroxide oxide (Fe(OH)O) yielded polydisulfide oligomers. This polymerization occurred readily at low dithiol concentration under mild aqueous conditions. Polydisulfide polymers up to the 15-mer were synthesized from 1 mM dithiol in 5 ml water reacted with iron(III) hydroxide oxide (20 mg, 160 micromole Fe) for 3 days under anaerobic conditions at 40 C and pH 4. About 91% of the dithiol was converted to short soluble oligomers and 9% to insoluble larger oligomers that were isolated with the Fe(OH)O phase. Reactions carried out at the same ratio of dithiol to Fe(OH)O but at higher dithiol concentrations gave higher yields of the larger insoluble oligomers. The relationship of these results to prebiotic polymer synthesis is discussed.

Precision Synthesis of Conjugated Polymer Films by Surface-Confined Stepwise Sonogashira Cross-Coupling

Thin films of poly(arylene ethynylene)-conjugated polymers, including low-energy-gap donor–acceptor polymers, can be prepared via stepwise polymerization utilizing surface-confined Sonogashira cross-coupling. This robust and efficient polymerization protocol yields conjugated polymers with a precise molecular structure and with nanometer-level control of the organization and the uniform alignment of the macromolecular chains in the densely packed film. In addition to high stability and predictable and well-defined molecular organization and morphology, the surface-confined conjugated polymer chains experience significant interchain electronic interactions, resulting in dominating intermolecular π-electron delocalization which is primarily responsible for the electronic and spectroscopic properties of polymer films. The fluorescent films demonstrate remarkable performance in chemosensing applications, showing a turn-off fluorescent response on the sub-ppt (part per trillion) level of nitroaromatic explosives in water. This unique sensitivity is likely related to the enhanced exciton mobility in the uniformly aligned and structurally monodisperse polymer films.
