Model-independent determination of the dipole response of 66 Zn using quasimonoenergetic and linearly polarized photon beams

Background: Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photoresponse of atomic nuclei. Purpose: Here, we determine the photoresponse of 66 Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the 'elastic' decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. Methods: Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were performed using a linearly polarized quasi-monoenergetic photon beam at the High Intensity γ-ray Source. Photon beam energies from 5.6 to 9.9 MeV with an energy spread of about 3% were selected in steps of 200–300 keV. Two high purity germanium detectors were used for the subsequent γ-ray spectroscopy. Results: Full photoabsorption cross sections are extracted from the data making use of the monoenergetic character of the photon beam. For the ground-state decay channel, the average contribution of electric and magnetic dipole strengths is disentangled. The average branching ratio back to the ground state is determined as well. Conclusions: The new results indicate lower cross sections when compared to the values extracted from a former experiment using bremsstrahlung on 66 Zn. In the latter, the average branching ratio to the ground state is estimated from statistical-model calculations in order to analyze the data. Corresponding estimates from statistical-model calculations underestimate this branching ratio compared to the values extracted from the present analysis, which would partly explain the high cross sections determined from the bremsstrahlung data.

Electron and neutrino scattering off the deuteron in a relativistic framework

Here, we build a relativistic model to perform calculations of exclusive, semiexclusive, and inclusive unpolarized cross sections and various polarization observables in electron and neutrino scattering experiments with deuteron targets. The strong interaction dynamics is defined by an explicit dynamical unitary representation of the Poincaré group, where representations of space translations and rotations in the interacting and noninteracting representations are the same. The Argonne V18 potential is used to construct a relativistic nucleon-nucleon interaction reproducing the experimental deuteron binding energy and nucleon-nucleon scattering observables. Our formalism does not include the pion production channel and neglects two-body contributions in the electromagnetic as well as in the weak nuclear current operator. We show that it is applicable to processes at kinematics, where the internal two-nucleon energy remains below the pion production threshold but the magnitude of the three-momentum transfer extends at least to several GeV.

Event-by-event correlations between Λ ( Λ ¯ ) hyperon global polarization and handedness with charged hadron azimuthal separation in Au + Au collisions at s N N = 27 GeV from STAR

Global polarizations (P) of Λ (Λ¯) hyperons have been observed in non-central heavy-ion collisions. The strong magnetic field primarily created by the spectator protons in such collisions would split the Λ and Λ¯ global polarizations (ΔP=P Λ –P Λ ¯<0). Additionally, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts topological charge fluctuations in vacuum, resulting in a chirality imbalance or parity violation in a local domain. This would give rise to an imbalance (Δn = N L –N R /< N L +N R > ≠0) between left- and right-handed Λ (Λ¯) as well as a charge separation along the magnetic field, referred to as the chiral magnetic effect (CME). This charge separation can be characterized by the parity-even azimuthal correlator (Δγ) and parity-odd azimuthal harmonic observable (Δa 1 ). Measurements of ΔP, Δγ, and Δa 1 have not led to definitive conclusions concerning the CME or the magnetic field, and Δn has not been measured previously. Correlations among these observables may reveal new insights. Furthermore, this paper reports measurements of correlation between Δn and Δa 1 , which is sensitive to chirality fluctuations, and correlation between ΔP and Δγ sensitive to magnetic field in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV. For both measurements, no correlations have been observed beyond statistical fluctuations.

Global polarization of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV

In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a global spin polarization, 𝑃 H , of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons along the direction of the system angular momentum was discovered and measured across a broad range of collision energies and demonstrated a trend of increasing 𝑃 H with decreasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. A splitting between Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ polarization may be possible due to their different magnetic moments in a late-stage magnetic field sustained by the quark-gluon plasma which is formed in the collision. The results presented in this study find no significant splitting at the collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV in the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions Beam Energy Scan Phase II using the STAR detector, with an upper limit of 𝑃 $\overline{Λ}$ – 𝑃 Λ < 0.24% and 𝑃 $\overline{Λ}$ – 𝑃 Λ < 0.35%, respectively, at a 95% confidence level. We derive an upper limit on the naive extraction of the late-stage magnetic field of 𝐵 < 9.4 × 10 12 T and 𝐵 < 1.4 × 10 13 T at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV, respectively, although more thorough derivations are needed. Differential measurements of 𝑃 H were performed with respect to collision centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity. With our current acceptance of |𝑦| < 1 and uncertainties, we observe no dependence on transverse momentum and rapidity in this analysis. Furthermore, these results challenge multiple existing model calculations following a variety of different assumptions which have each predicted a strong dependence on rapidity in this collision-energy range.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in ρ ( 770 ) production with a linearly polarized photon beam at E γ = 8.2 – 8.8 GeV

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson rho(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. Here we confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full t range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced rho(770) differ by two units are negligible for -t<0.5GeV 2 /c 2 .

Pseudo-neutrino versus recoil formalism for 4-body phase space and applications to nuclear decay

It is well known that the traditional treatment of radiative corrections that utilizes the “true” neutrino momentum$\overrightarrow{p}_v$ in the differential decay rate formula could lead to a ~α/π systematic error in certain observables due to the mistreatment of 4-body kinematics. Here, I investigate the theory structure of one of the proposed solutions, the “v'-formalism”, in the nonrecoil limit appropriate for neutron and nuclear β decays. I derive an elegant master formula for the 4-body phase space and use it to reanalyze the spectrum-dependent “outer” radiative corrections to the β decay of a polarized spin-half nucleus; a complete set of analytic expressions is provided for readers to straightforwardly obtain the final numerical results. Furthermore, I compare it to the “recoil formalism” where the energy of the recoil nucleus is fixed.

Energy dependence of polarized 𝛾⁢𝛾 → 𝑒 + ⁢ 𝑒− in peripheral Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 and 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC

We report the differential yields at mid-rapidity of the Breit-Wheeler process (𝛾⁢𝛾 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − ) in peripheral Au+Aucollisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 54.4 and 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as a function of energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − transverse momentum 𝑝 T , 𝑝$^{2}_{T}$, invariant mass 𝑀 𝑒⁢𝑒 , and azimuthal angle. In the invariant mass range of 0.4 < 𝑀 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 2.6GeV/𝑐 2 at low transverse momentum (𝑝 T < 0.15GeV/𝑐), the yields increase while the pair √⟨𝑝$^{2}_{T}$⟩ decreases with increasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, a feature that is correctly predicted by the QED calculation. Here, the energy dependencies of the measured quantities are sensitive to the nuclear form factor, infrared divergence and photon polarization. The data are compiled and used to extract the charge radius of the Au nucleus.

Electric dipole polarizability of 58 Ni

The electric dipole strength distribution in 58 Ni between 6 and 20 MeV has been determined from proton inelastic scattering experiments at very forward angles at RCNP, Osaka. The experimental data are rather well reproduced by quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations including vibration coupling, despite a mild dependence on the adopted Skyrme interaction. They allow an estimate of the experimentally inaccessible high-energy contribution above 20 MeV, leading to an electric dipole polarizability α D ⁡ ( 58 Ni) = 3.48 (31)⁢ fm 3 . This serves as a test case for recent extensions of coupled-cluster calculations with chiral effective field theory interactions to nuclei with two nucleons on top of a closed-shell system.

Photoproduction of the Σ + hyperon using linearly polarized photons with CLAS

Measurements of the polarization observables Σ, P, T, O x , O z for the reaction $\vec{γ}$ p → $K^0_S$Σ + using a linearly polarized photon beam of energy 1.1 to 2.1 GeV are reported. The measured data provide information on a channel that has not been studied extensively, but is required for a full coupled-channel analysis in the nucleon resonance region. Observables have been simultaneously extracted using likelihood sampling with a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo process. Angular distributions in bins of photon energy E γ are produced for each polarization observable. T, O x , and O z are first time measurements of these observables in this reaction. The extraction of Σ extends the energy range beyond a previous measurement. The measurement of P, the recoil polarization, is consistent with previous measurements. The measured data are shown to be significant enough to affect the estimation of the nucleon resonance parameters when fitted within a coupled-channels model.

Measurement of the nucleon spin structure functions for 0.01 < 𝑄 2 < 1 GeV 2 using CLAS

The spin structure functions of the proton and the deuteron were measured during the EG4 experiment at Jefferson Lab in 2006. Data were collected for longitudinally polarized electron scattering off longitudinally polarized NH 3 and ND 3 targets, for 𝑄 2 values as small as 0.012 and 0.02 GeV 2 , respectively, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. This is the archival paper of the EG4 experiment that summarizes the previously reported results of the polarized structure functions 𝑔 1 , 𝐴 1 ⁢𝐹 1 , and their moments $\bar{Γ}$ 1 , $\bar{𝛾}$ 0 , and $\bar{𝐼}$ TT , for both the proton and the deuteron. In addition, we report on new results on the neutron 𝑔 1 extracted by combining proton and deuteron data and correcting for Fermi smearing, and on the neutron moments $\bar{Γ}$ 1 , $\bar{𝛾}$ 0 , and $\bar{𝐼}$ TT formed directly from those of the proton and the deuteron. Our data are in good agreement with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the proton, deuteron, and neutron. Furthermore, the isovector combination was formed for 𝑔 1 and the Bjorken integral $\bar{Γ}^{𝑝−𝑛}_1$, and it was compared to available theoretical predictions. All of our results, to the best of our knowledge, provide for the first time extensive tests of spin observable predictions from chiral effective field theory (𝜒⁢EFT) in a 𝑄 2 range commensurate with the pion mass. Finally, they motivate further improvement in 𝜒⁢EFT calculations from other approaches such as the lattice gauge method.

Comparison of transverse single-spin asymmetries for forward π 0 production in polarized pp , p Al and p Au collisions at nucleon pair c.m. energy √sNN=200 GeV

The STAR collaboration reports a measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, A N , for neutral pions produced in polarized proton collisions with protons ( p p ), with aluminum nuclei ( p Al ) and with gold nuclei ( p Au ) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7 < η < 3.8 . Results are presented for π 0 s observed in the STAR forward meson spectrometer electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x ( x F ) and transverse momentum ( p T ) bins, spanning the range 0.17 < x F < 0.81 and 1.7 < p T < 6.0 GeV / c . For fixed x F < 0.47 , the asymmetries are found to rise with increasing transverse momentum. For larger x F , the asymmetry flattens or falls as p T increases. Parametrizing the ratio r ( A ) ≡ A N ( p A ) / A N ( p p ) = A P over the kinematic range, the ratio r ( A ) is found to depend only weakly on A , with ( P ) = - 0.027 ± 0.005 . No significant difference in P is observed between the low- p T region, p T < 2.5 GeV / c , where gluon saturation effects may play a role, and the high- p T region, p T > 2.5 GeV / c . It is further observed that the value of A N is significantly larger for events with a large- p T isolated π 0 than for events with a nonisolated π 0 accompanied by additional jetlike fragments. The nuclear dependence r ( A ) is similar for isolated and nonisolated π 0 events.
