Sub-micron surface plasmon resonance sensor systems

Wearable or implantable devices combining microfluidic control of sample and reagent flow and micro-cavity surface plasmon resonance sensors functionalized with surface treatments or coatings capable of specifically binding to target analytes, ligands, or molecules in a bodily fluid are provided. The devices can be used to determine the presence and concentration of target analytes in the bodily fluids and thereby help diagnose, monitor or detect changes in disease conditions.

Design of high-transmission plasmonic wavelength and polarization filters for infrared photodetectors

We have designed plasmonic filters that simultaneously perform wavelength and polarization filtering in the wavelength range 3-5 micrometers. In this work we outline the design and present the simulated results of our filters. The filters consist of sub wavelength slits in a thin metal sheet which is deposited on top of a gallium antimonide (GaSb) substrate and a spacer layer of SiO2. This configuration makes our filters suitable for integration with GaSb based infrared photodetectors and photodetector arrays that are used in space applications. Our work opens up the possibility of using these detector arrays for highly compact Earth-observing infrared polarimeters and multispectral imaging applications.

Holography utilizing surface plasmon resonances

A holographic recording medium with a substrate which has a diffraction grating composed of a number of spaced line ridges on the surface is discussed. The first layer consists of a metal with a plasma wavelength shorter than that of the selected light source. A second layer, or coating, on top of the first layer consists of a thin film of photosensitive emulsion. A diagram of the device is provided. The principles of operation are explained.

Solar energy conversion through the interaction of plasmons with tunnel junctions. Part A: Solar cell analysis. Part B: Photoconductor analysis

A solar cell utilizing guided optical waves and tunnel junctions was analyzed to determine its feasibility. From this analysis, it appears that the limits imposed upon conventional multiple cell systems also limit this solar cell. Due to this limitation, it appears that the relative simplicity of the conventional multiple cell systems over the solar cell make the conventional multiple cell systems the more promising candidate for improvement. It was discovered that some superlattice structures studied could be incorporated into an infrared photodetector. This photoconductor appears to be promising as a high speed, sensitive (high D sup star sub BLIP) detector in the wavelength range from 15 to over 100 micrometers.

Surface Plasmon Resonance Evaluation of Colloidal Metal Aerogel Filters

We have fabricated aerogels containing gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles for gas catalysis applications. By applying the concept of an average or effective dielectric constant to the heterogeneous interlayer surrounding each particle, we extend the technique of immersion spectroscopy to porous or heterogeneous media. Specifically, we apply the predominant effective medium theories for the determination of the average fractional composition of each component in this inhomogeneous layer. Hence, the surface area of metal available for catalytic gas reaction is determined. The technique is satisfactory for statistically random metal particle distributions but needs further modification for aggregated or surfactant modified systems. Additionally, the kinetics suggest that collective particle interactions in coagulated clusters are perturbed during silica gelation resulting in a change in the aggregate geometry.

Plasmonic Antenna Coupling for QWIPs

In a proposed scheme for coupling light into a quantum-well infrared photodetector (QWIP), an antenna or an array of antennas made of a suitable metal would be fabricated on the face of what would otherwise be a standard QWIP. This or any such coupling scheme is required to effect polarization conversion: Light incident perpendicularly to the face is necessarily polarized in the plane of the face, whereas, as a matter of fundamental electrodynamics and related quantum selection rules, light must have a non-zero component of perpendicular polarization in order to be absorbed in the photodetection process. In a prior coupling scheme, gratings in the form of surface corrugations diffract normally gles, thereby imparting some perpendicular polarization. Unfortunately, the corrugation- fabrication process increases the overall nonuniformity of a large QWIP array. The proposed scheme is an alternative to the use of surface corrugations.
