Overview of Selection Process for Most Influential Paper of the 1970's

Slides are for a presentation at the AIAA AFM conference invited session titled, 'AFM Most Influential Papers of the 1970's'. The slides describe the selection process used by the members of the technical committee to select the finalists and winning paper. The slides refer to technical papers published in the past, but have no technical data contained within them.

Position Paper: Designing Complex Systems to Support Interdisciplinary Cognitive Work

The paper argues that the field we can call cognitive science of interdisciplinary collaboration is an important area of study for improving design of Large-Scale Complex Systems (LaCES) and supporting cognitive work. The paper mostly raised questions that have been documented in earlier qualitative analysis studies, and provided possible avenues of exploration for addressing them. There are likely further contributions from additional disciplines beyond those mentioned in this paper that should be considered and integrated into such a cognitive science framework. Knowledge and awareness of various perspectives will help to inform the types of interventions available for improving LaCES design and functionality. For example, a cognitive interpretation of interdisciplinary collaborations in LaCES elucidated the need for a "translator" or "mediator" in helping subject matter experts to transcend language boundaries, mitigate single discipline bias, support integrative activities, and correct misaligned objectives. Additional research in this direction is likely to uncover similar gaps and opportunities for improvements in practice.

The need for reference-able and peer reviewed position papers

Space Physics community members are putting substantial efforts and ideas into position papers, in preparation for the U.S. Heliophysics Decadal Survey process; an analysis of the current state of the field and where future research, mission programs, and funding should focus. Furthermore, Space Physics community members in Europe and the U.S. have recently put substantial efforts and ideas into position papers for Vision 2050 and Heliophysics 2050. There are also other ideas in the community about the needs and focus of future Space Physics research efforts, whether they were submitted to other road mapping activities, or have yet to find the appropriate home. With this in mind, we have created a Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences Research Topic ’The Future of Space Physics 2022’, to provide a format for a reference-able, peer reviewed, archived, accessible collection of these ideas from around the world. We wish to make these ideas available to the national academies decadal survey committees, the broader research community and a wider audience, by developing this collection. The collection will publish high-quality papers on key topics across the field of Space Physics, aiming to highlight recent advances in the field, whilst emphasizing important directions and new possibilities for future inquiries.

NACA Conference on Helicopters a Compilation of the Papers Presented at Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, Langley Field, Va., May 12 and 13, 1954

This document contains reproductions of technical papers presented at the NACA Conference on Helicopters held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory May 12 and 13, 1954. The primary purpose of this conference was to convey to the military services, their contractors, and others concerned with the design of helicopters the results of NACA research on helicopters and to provide those attending an opportunity to discuss the results. The papers in this document are in the same form in which they were presented at the conference in order to facilitate their prompt distribution. The original presentation and this record are considered as complementary to, rather than as substitutes for, the Committee's more complete and formal reports . A list of the conferees is included.

Electronic circuitry used to automate paper chromatography

Electronic circuit is used in a paper chromatograph instrument that has excellent sensitivity and furnishes a printed record of each test. The circuit measures and records changes in conductivity in a strip of chromatographic paper as different solutions are placed on it.

Tester automatically checks paper tape punch and reader after maintenance

Device automatically bench tests paper tape punches and readers in a simulated operating environment following routine maintenance. The reader and punch operate back-to-back and the paper tape output feeds the reader. The tape leader is prepunched with an arbitrary pattern that is continuously reproduced during the check.

Antonio Ferri: Selected Papers on Advanced Design of Air Vehicles

This publication contains a selection of ten papers by Professor Antonio Ferri, who died in 1976 after many years association with AGARD. These papers were selected by a committee composed of Professor P. Libby, Professor R. Monti, Professor R.G. Napolitano, Dr D.M. Rogers and Professor R.Vaglio, and are concerned with the advanced design of air vehicles. They are published to bring together in one place examples of Professor Ferri's most important contributions to aerospace research and development. A biography of Professor Ferri is included, together with a bibliography of his works, and tributes from his friends and colleagues.

Solid Convection in the Terrestrial Planets; Workshop, NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., December 12, 13, 1977, Review Papers and Contributions

Review papers and specific contributions on the subject of convection in the solid interiors of the terrestrial planets and planetary evolution are presented. Geophysical observations of solid-state convection in the terrestrial planets are reviewed, along with the theory of convection in a layer with a high Prandtl number and numerical approaches to the calculation of convection in planetary interiors. Other papers treat the formation, history and energetics of terrestrial planet cores, the effects of convection on lunar thermal history and the relation between the height of mountains on Venus and the creep properties of Venusian rocks.

Collection and dissemination of TES system information for the paper and pulp industry

A survey of U.S. and international paper and pulp mills using thermal energy storage (TES) systems as a part of their production processes was conducted to obtain sufficient operating data to conduct a benefits analysis encompassing: (1) an energy conservation assessment, (2) an economic benefits analysis, and (3) an environmental impact assessment. An information dissemination plan was then proposed to effectively present the benefits of TES to the U.S. paper and pulp industry.

Voyager-Jupiter radio science data papers

The reduction and interpretation of the radio science data from the Voyager 1 and 2 encounters of the planet Jupiter and its satellites resulted in the preparation of several papers for publication in the special Voyager-Jupiter issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research. The radio science and tracking systems of the Deep Space Network provide the data which makes this research possible. This article lists submitted papers by title, with their authors and with abstracts of their contents.

Misconceptions in recent papers on special relativity and absolute space theories

Several recent papers which purport to substantiate or negate arguments in favor of certain theories of absolute space have been based on fallacious principles. This paper discusses three related instances, indicating where misconceptions have arisen. It is established, contrary to popular belief, that the classical Lorentz ether theory accounts for all the experimental evidence which supports the special theory of relativity. It is demonstrated that the ether theory predicts the null results obtained from pulsar timing and Moessbauer experiments. It is concluded that a measurement of the one-way velocity of light has physical meaning within the context of the Lorentz theory, and it is argued that an adequately designed experiment to measure the one-way velocity of light should be attempted.
