Thermally stable, low resistance contact systems for use with shallow junction p(+) nn(+) and n(+)pp(+) InP solar cells

Two contact systems for use on shallow junction InP solar cells are described. The feature shared by these two contact systems is the absence of the metallurgical intermixing that normally takes place between the semiconductor and the contact metallization during the sintering process. The n(+)pp(+) cell contact system, consisting of a combination of Au and Ge, not only exhibits very low resistance in the as-fabricated state, but also yields post-sinter resistivity values of 1(exp -7) ohms-sq cm, with effectively no metal-InP interdiffusion. The n(+)pp(+)cell contact system, consisting of a combination of Ag and Zn, permits low resistance ohmic contact to be made directly to a shallow junction p/n InP device without harming the device itself during the contacting process.

Measurement of the Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

The first measurement of the Z boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV in the forward region is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 100 ± 2 pb –1 . The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < η < 4.5 with transverse momentum p T > 20 GeV/c. The integrated cross-section is determined to be ${\sigma}_{Z\to \mu +\mu -}=39.6\pm 0.7\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.6\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.8\left(\textrm{lumi}\right)\textrm{pb}$ for the di-muon invariant mass in the range 60 < M μμ < 120 GeV/c 2 . This result and the differential cross-section results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. Based on a previous LHCb measurement of the Z boson production cross-section in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, the nuclear modification factor RpPb is measured for the first time at this energy. The measured values are ${1.2}_{-0.3}^{+0.5}$ (stat) ± 0.1(syst) in the forward region (1.53 < ${y}_{\mu}^{\ast }$ < 4.03) and ${3.6}_{-0.9}^{+1.6}$ (stat) ± 0.2(syst) in the backward region (–4.97 < ${y}_{\mu}^{\ast }$ < –2.47), where ${y}_{\mu}^{\ast }$ represents the muon rapidity in the centre-of-mass frame.

Multiplicity and event-scale dependent flow and jet fragmentation in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Long- and short-range correlations for pairs of charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle Δφ and pseudorapidity separation Δη for pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.9 and the transverse-momentum interval 1 < p T < 4 GeV/c. Flow coefficients are extracted for the long-range correlations (1.6 < |Δη| < 1.8) in various high-multiplicity event classes using the low-multiplicity template ft method. The method is used to subtract the enhanced yield of away-side jet fragments in high-multiplicity events. These results show decreasing flow signals toward lower multiplicity events. Furthermore, the flow coefficients for events with hard probes, such as jets or leading particles, do not exhibit any significant changes compared to those obtained from high-multiplicity events without any specific event selection criteria. The results are compared with hydrodynamic-model calculations, and it is found that a better understanding of the initial conditions is necessary to describe the results, particularly for low-multiplicity events.

Measurement of ω meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The p T -differential cross section of ω meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, covering an unprecedented transverse-momentum range of 1.6 < p T < 50 GeV/c. The meson is reconstructed via the ω → π + π − π 0 decay channel. The results are compared with various theoretical calculations: PYTHIA8.2 with the Monash 2013 tune overestimates the data by up to 50%, whereas good agreement is observed with Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations incorporating ω fragmentation using a broken SU(3) model. The ω/π 0 ratio is presented and compared with theoretical calculations and the available measurements at lower collision energies. The presented data triples the p T ranges of previously available measurements. A constant ratio of C ω/π0 = 0.578 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) is found above a transverse momentum of 4 GeV/c, which is in agreement with previous findings at lower collision energies within the systematic and statistical uncertainties.

Measurement of the inclusive WZ production cross section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13.6 TeV

The inclusive WZ production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV, using data collected during 2022 with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb −1 . The measurement uses multileptonic final states and a simultaneous likelihood fit to the number of events in four different lepton flavour categories: eee, ee μ , μμ e, and μμμ . The selection is optimized to minimize the number of background events, and relies on an efficient prompt lepton discrimination strategy. The WZ production cross section is measured in a phase space defined within a 30 GeV window around the Z boson mass, as σ total (pp → WZ) = 55.2 ± 1.2 (stat) ± 1.2 (syst) ± 0.8 (lumi) ± 0.3 (theo) pb. In addition, the cross section is measured in a fiducial phase space closer to the detector-level requirements. All the measurements presented in this paper are in agreement with standard model predictions.

Measurements of the groomed and ungroomed jet angularities in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

The jet angularities are a class of jet substructure observables which characterize the angular and momentum distribution of particles within jets. These observables are sensitive to momentum scales ranging from perturbative hard scatterings to nonperturbative fragmentation into final-state hadrons. We report measurements of several groomed and ungroomed jet angularities in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed using charged particle tracks at midrapidity (|η| < 0.9). The anti-$k_T$ algorithm is used with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2 and R = 0.4 for several transverse momentum $p^{ch jet}_{T}$ intervals in the 20–100 GeV/c range. Using the jet grooming algorithm Soft Drop, the sensitivity to softer, wide-angle processes, as well as the underlying event, can be reduced in a way which is well-controlled in theoretical calculations. We report the ungroomed jet angularities, λ α , and groomed jet angularities, λ α,g , to investigate the interplay between perturbative and nonperturbative effects at low jet momenta. Various angular exponent parameters α = 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 are used to systematically vary the sensitivity of the observable to collinear and soft radiation. Results are compared to analytical predictions at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, which provide a generally good description of the data in the perturbative regime but exhibit discrepancies in the nonperturbative regime. Moreover, these measurements serve as a baseline for future ones in heavy-ion collisions by providing new insight into the interplay between perturbative and nonperturbative effects in the angular and momentum substructure of jets. They supply crucial guidance on the selection of jet resolution parameter, jet transverse momentum, and angular scaling variable for jet quenching studies.

Measurements of the groomed jet radius and momentum splitting fraction with the soft drop and dynamical grooming algorithms in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV

This article presents measurements of the groomed jet radius and momentum splitting fraction in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Inclusive charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k T algorithm for transverse momentum 60 < p$_{T}^{ch jet}$ < 80 GeV/c. We report results using two different grooming algorithms: soft drop and, for the first time, dynamical grooming. For each grooming algorithm, a variety of grooming settings are used in order to explore the impact of collinear radiation on these jet substructure observables. These results are compared to perturbative calculations that include resummation of large logarithms at all orders in the strong coupling constant. We find good agreement of the theoretical predictions with the data for all grooming settings considered.

Search for electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in final states with two τ -leptons in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

Three searches for the direct production of τ-sleptons or charginos and neutralinos in final states with at least two hadronically decaying τ-leptons are presented. For chargino and neutralino production, decays via intermediate τ-sleptons or W and h bosons are considered. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 , recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected Standard Model background is observed and supersymmetric particle mass limits at 95% confidence level are obtained in simplified models. For direct production of $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^+_1$ $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^-_1$, chargino masses are excluded up to 970 GeV, while $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^±_1$ and $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^0_2$ masses up to 1160 GeV (330 GeV) are excluded for $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^±_1$ $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^0_2$ / $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^+_1$ $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^-_1$ production with subsequent decays via τ-sleptons (W and h bosons). Masses of τ-sleptons up to 500 GeV are excluded for mass degenerate $\sim\atop{\tau}$ L,R scenarios and up to 425 GeV for $\sim\atop{\tau}$ L-only scenarios. Sensitivity to $\sim\atop{\tau}$ R -only scenarios from the ATLAS experiment is presented here for the first time, with $\sim\atop{\tau}$ R masses excluded up to 350 GeV.

Light-flavor particle production in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV as a function of transverse spherocity

Results on the transverse spherocity dependence of light-flavor particle production (π, K, p, ϕ, K *0 , K$^{0}_{S}$, Λ, Ξ) at midrapidity in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV were obtained with the ALICE apparatus. The transverse spherocity estimator ($S$$^{p_T=1}_{O}$) categorizes events by their azimuthal topology. Utilizing narrow selections on $S$$^{p_T=1}_{O}$, it is possible to contrast particle production in collisions dominated by many soft initial interactions with that observed in collisions dominated by one or more hard scatterings. Results are reported for two multiplicity estimators covering different pseudorapidity regions. The $S$$^{p_T=1}_{O}$ estimator is found to effectively constrain the hardness of the events when the midrapidity (|η| < 0.8) estimator is used.

Test of lepton flavour universality in W-boson decays into electrons and τ-leptons using pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions, Rτ/e = B(W → τν)/B(W → eν), is performed using a sample of W bosons originating from top-quark decays to final states containing τ-leptons or electrons. This measurement uses pp collisions at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The W → τντ (with τ → eνeντ) and W → eνe decays are distinguished using the differences in the impact parameter distributions and transverse momentum spectra of the electrons. The measured ratio of branching fractions Rτ/e = 0.975 ± 0.012 (stat.) ± 0.020 (syst.), is consistent with the Standard Model assumption of lepton flavour universality in W-boson decays.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in top quark production and decay in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Results are presented from a search for charged-lepton flavor violating (CLFV) interactions in top quark production and decay in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are required to contain one oppositely charged electron-muon pair in the final state, along with at least one jet identified as originating from a bottom quark. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. This analysis includes both the production (q → eμt) and decay (t → eμq) modes of the top quark through CLFV interactions, with q referring to a u or c quark. These interactions are parametrized using an effective field theory approach. With no significant excess over the standard model expectation, the results are interpreted in terms of vector-, scalar-, and tensor-like CLFV four-fermion effective interactions. Finally, observed exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence levels on the respective branching fractions of a top quark to an eμ pair and an up (charm) quark of 0.13 × 10$^{-6}$ (1.31 × 10$^{-6}$), 0.07 × 10$^{-6}$ (0.89 × 10$^{-6}$), and 0.25 × 10$^{-6}$ (2.59 × 10$^{-6}$) for vector, scalar, and tensor CLFV interactions, respectively.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurement of the top-quark mass using a leptonic invariant mass in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the top-quark mass ($m_t$) in the $t\overline{t}$ → lepton+jets channel is presented, with an experimental technique which exploits semileptonic decays of $b$-hadrons produced in the top-quark decay chain. The distribution of the invariant mass $m_{{\ell}µ}$ of the lepton, $\ell$ (with $\ell$ = $e, µ$), from the $W$-boson decay and the muon, $µ$, originating from the b-hadron decay is reconstructed, and a binned-template profile likelihood fit is performed to extract $m_t$. The measurement is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The measured value of the top-quark mass is $m_t$ = 174.41 ± 0.39 (stat.) ± 0.66 (syst.) ± 0.25 (recoil) GeV, where the third uncertainty arises from changing the Pythia8 parton shower gluon-recoil scheme, used in top-quark decays, to a recently developed setup.

Production of pions, kaons, and protons as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

The production of π ± , K ± , and (p¯)p is measured in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV in different topological regions of the events. Particle transverse momentum (p T ) spectra are measured in the “toward”, “transverse”, and “away” angular regions defined with respect to the direction of the leading particle in the event. While the toward and away regions contain the fragmentation products of the near-side and away-side jets, respectively, the transverse region is dominated by particles from the Underlying Event (UE). The relative transverse activity classifier, R T = N T / < N T >, is used to group events according to their UE activity, where N T is the measured charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and < N T > is the mean value over all the analysed events. The first measurements of identified particle p T spectra as a function of R T in the three topological regions are reported. It is found that the yield of high transverse momentum particles relative to the R T -integrated measurement decreases with increasing R T in both the toward and the away regions, indicating that the softer UE dominates particle production as R T increases and validating that R T can be used to control the magnitude of the UE. Conversely, the spectral shapes in the transverse region harden significantly with increasing R T . This hardening follows a mass ordering, being more significant for heavier particles. Finally, it is observed that the pT-differential particle ratios (p+p¯)/(π + +π – ) and (K + + K – )/(π + + π – ) in the low UE limit (R T → 0) approach expectations from Monte Carlo generators such as PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC, where the jet-fragmentation models have been tuned to reproduce e + e – results.

Search for light long-lived neutral particles that decay to collimated pairs of leptons or light hadrons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for light long-lived neutral particles with masses in the O(MeV–GeV) range is presented. The analysis targets the production of long-lived dark photons in the decay of a Higgs boson produced via gluon–gluon fusion or in association with a W boson. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are selected in 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Background estimates for contributions from Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are consistent with the expected background. Exclusion limits are reported on the production cross-section times branching fraction as a function of the mean proper decay length cτ of the dark photon, or as a function of the dark-photon mass and kinetic mixing parameter that quantifies the coupling between the Standard Model and potential hidden (dark) sectors. A Higgs boson branching fraction above 1% is excluded at 95% CL for a Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark-photon mean proper decay lengths between 10 mm and 250 mm and dark photons with masses between 0.4 GeV and 2 GeV.

Search for excited $τ$-leptons and leptoquarks in the final state with $τ$-leptons and jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is reported for excited $τ$-leptons and leptoquarks in events with two hadronically decaying $τ$-leptons and two or more jets. The search uses proton-proton ($pp$) collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment during the Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider in 2015–2018. The total integrated luminosity is 139 fb -1 . The excited $τ$-lepton is assumed to be produced and to decay via a four-fermion contact interaction into an ordinary $τ$-lepton and a quark-antiquark pair. The leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs via the strong interaction, and each leptoquark is assumed to couple to a charm or lighter quark and a $τ$-lepton. No excess over the background prediction is observed. Excited $τ$-leptons with masses below 2.8 TeV are excluded at 95% CL in scenarios with the contact interaction scale Λ set to 10 TeV. At the extreme limit of model validity where Λ is set equal to the excited $τ$-lepton mass, excited $τ$-leptons with masses below 4.6 TeV are excluded. Leptoquarks with masses below 1.3 TeV are excluded at 95% CL if their branching ratio to a charm quark and a $τ$-lepton equals 1. The analysis does not exploit flavour-tagging in the signal region.

Search for long-lived, massive particles in events with displaced vertices and multiple jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for long-lived particles decaying into hadrons is presented. The analysis uses 139 fb –1 of $pp$ collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC using events that contain multiple energetic jets and a displaced vertex. The search employs dedicated reconstruction techniques that significantly increase the sensitivity to longlived particles decaying in the ATLAS inner detector. Background estimates for Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are compatible with those expected from background processes. The results are used to set limits at 95% confidence level on model-independent cross sections for processes beyond the Standard Model, and on scenarios with pair-production of supersymmetric particles with long-lived electroweakinos that decay via a small $R$-parity-violating coupling. The pair-production of electroweakinos with masses below 1.5 TeV is excluded for mean proper lifetimes in the range from 0.03 ns to 1 ns. When produced in the decay of $m$($\tilde{g}$) = 2.4 TeV gluinos, electroweakinos with $m$($\tilde{χ}_{1}^{0}$) = 1.5 TeV are excluded with lifetimes in the range of 0.02 ns to 4 ns.

Strangeness enhancement at its extremes: multiple (multi-)strange hadron production in pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s}=5.02\) TeV

The probability to observe a specific number of strange and multi-strange hadrons (nS), denoted as P(nS), is measured by ALICE at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) in $$\sqrt{s}=5.02$$ TeV proton-proton (pp) collisions, dividing events into several multiplicity-density classes. Exploiting, for the first time, a technique based on counting the number of strange-particle candidates event-by-event, this measurement allows one to extend the study of strangeness production beyond the mean of the distribution. This constitutes a new test bench for production mechanisms, probing events with a large imbalance between strange and non-strange content. The analysis of a large-statistics data sample makes it possible to extract P(nS) up to a maximum nS of 7 for $${\text{K}}_{\text{S}}^{0}$$, 5 for Λ and $$\overline{\Lambda }$$, 4 for Ξ− and $${\overline{\Xi } }^{+}$$, and 2 for Ω− and $${\overline{\Omega } }^{+}$$. From this, the probability of producing strange hadron multiplets per event is calculated, thereby enabling the extension of the study of strangeness enhancement to extreme situations where several strange quarks hadronize in a single event at midrapidity. Moreover, comparing hadron combinations with different u and d quark compositions and equal overall s quark content, the contribution to the enhancement pattern coming from non-strangeness related mechanisms is isolated. The results are compared with state-of-the-art phenomenological models implemented in commonly used Monte Carlo event generators, including PYTHIA 8 Monash 2013, PYTHIA 8 with QCD-based Color Reconnection and Rope Hadronization (QCD-CR + Ropes), and EPOS LHC, which incorporates both partonic interactions and hydrodynamic evolution. These comparisons show that the new approach dramatically enhances the sensitivity to the different underlying physics mechanisms modeled by each generator.

Measurement of Υ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV

The production cross-sections of Υ mesons, namely Υ(1S), Υ(2S) and Υ(3S), in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV are measured with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb –1 collected by the LHCb detector. The Υ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Υ → μ + μ – . Double differential cross-sections times branching fractions, as functions of the transverse momentum p T and the rapidity y of the Υ mesons, are measured in the range p T < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The results integrated over these p T and y ranges are $\sigma \left(\textrm{Y}(1S)\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{Y}(1S)\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=2101\pm 33\pm 83\ \textrm{pb},$ $\sigma \left(\textrm{Y}(2S)\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{Y}(2S)\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=526\pm 20\pm 21\ \textrm{pb},$ $\sigma \left(\textrm{Y}(3S)\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{Y}(3S)\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=242\pm 16\pm 10\ \textrm{pb},$ where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The ratios of cross-sections between measurements of two different Υ states and between measurements at different centre-of-mass energies are determined. The nuclear modification factor of Υ(1S) at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV is updated as well using the directly measured cross-section results from this analysis.
